I decided to play more with the poster visuals, as I confess to not being too well versed in the subtleties of Kubrick's work and directing themes.
Plus, I got to use one of the ugliest typefaces on Earth for Kubrick's name; Gill Sans Ultra Bold. I struggled with this aspect myself, in that I didn't really follow the requirement of knowing ZERO about the character when designing my poster. I kind of figured that since lots of Kubrick's films were derived from existing fiction works that there would be SOME idea of what Iron Man was by the designer, and maybe skew the perception of that. It's funny; I just talked to a friend of mine who is deep into Kubrick, and he wasn't at all surprised that so many of these entries have gone towards emulating the posters and advertising aspects of the movies rather than the movie content themselves. He felt that Kubrick's movie subjects were so scattered across genres that he didn't really have a visual "style" in the same way that Hithcock, or David Lynch or David Fincher have a very identifiable movies visuals style. It's for the very reason you mention that I decided on a VHS box design. I spent years as a kid intrigued by that Dr. Strangelove cover, and eventually was astonished by the indescribable richness of the movie it contained. I found Kubrick to be one of those rare kinds of artists capable of eliciting his art and style from anything he had to work with, as you said: the "HOW" being more significantly Kubrick than the "WHAT".
