We did one of these last year, I see no reason not to do it again this year.

I won't answer anything that's already in the FAQ, and you should probably read that first. It's not long, just the first post there. Just asking when something is coming out is a bit boring anyway.

Other than that... for the next five days I'll field questions and probably jabber randomly at you a bit.

And, by now, you'll know that I'm interested in more than comics, so there's no need to keep to that subject.

Anyway. Yes. Hello. Back in the interrogation cell again for five days.

You've obviously had dozens and dozens of books with a wide array of concepts, but it's probably fair to say that there's an impression out there of what a "Warren Ellis comic" entails (black humoured hard SF, revisionist superhero comics etc.). Have you any pet projects that you haven't been able to try because publishers felt they were too "out there" or too far outside of your usual work? I've always been curious about this, so thanks for providing the opportunity to ask.

When you're starting a new story how do you decide on what to name the characters?

That is so complex, for me, as to be almost unanswerable. Weirdly overdeveloped instinct, if you like. Sounds. Character background. That which evokes. While trying not to end up with character names that'd make even Don McGregor throw up in his mouth. I do sometimes overdo it.

For instance: I'm working on something right now where I think I've nailed the character name finally. Birch. Birch = wood = connotes a degree of strength and basic groundedness. But also birching = flagellation. Also, "John Birch Society," skeevy and untrustworthy. And it's a hard, sharp word. There's a lot about the character that unpacks out of the name.

Has Red being 'not a flop' changed much?

It took some financial pressure off me. Hasn't really changed anything else at all. I think about RED in terms of experiences, like introducing my daughter to Helen Mirren, getting to see the way the film industry does certain bits of business, meeting interesting people. I kept my distance from much of it to try and maintain my sanity as much as anything else -- I've seen people kind of go down the rabbit hole on these things. And I'm just not wired like Mark Millar, who has the ability to, as Amanda Palmer puts it, "turn into the skid" and just run with all the publicity and madness. My point being, I probably missed out on a lot of stuff, but I've still got my sanity, my privacy, and the bank account's out of the red. It'll do.

And, pleasingly, the majority of people seemed to accept the film for what it was: a bit of fun based on the rough structure and the themes of a much grimmer little short story. It's not like they committed TOTAL RECALL on it or anything.

When composing the first issue of a brand new comics serial, what do you make sure to include? Do you have a checklist of elements to establish? Do you feel you need to encapsulate all the important series elements right off the bat, or do you think it's fine to leave some of them for future issues?

When composing the first issue of a new comics serial, what I'm most aware of is that it's the first chapter of a finite work. I'm writing a book, just in pieces. BUT due to the requirements of serial, it also needs to somehow encapsulate more of the entire work than the first chapter of a novel might. It's a bit of a tightrope, and I often fall off. There's no checklist. There's getting the story started off in the way that the story requires, and then there's looking for ways to work more content into the interstitials to give more of a flavour of what the serial is really about.

Often they are in the process of painfully extracting themselves from their unkempt beds/rooms/houses/cells; surly, irritable and hung-over. Why do you keep revisiting this theme?

A few years ago the endemically corrupt Asif Zardari ascended to the presidency of my country, riding on the sympathy generated by Benazir Bhutto's assassination. At the time, my friends and I noticed the eerie similarities to Vita Savern's assassination and its consequences for The Smiler.
What has it been like to see the world begin to reflect your work (transmet in particular: Bi-cranial cats, ASSANGE/Wikileaks etc)?
Does it sometimes make you want to write more positive stories?

Also, How did it feel when you first heard that Moebius(!!) would be doing covers for Transmet?

I know you've dabbled in many genres; Superheroes, zombies, Prehistory. Have you ever delved into far-future fantasy, though? Like Dune, Metabarons etc.
On a related note, What is your take on Jodorowsky?

And finally, I'll regret it if I don't ask you this:

Do you have a rejected script lying around somewhere that you could throw my way?
When composing the first issue of a new comics serial, what I'm most aware of is that it's the first chapter of a finite work. I'm writing a book, just in pieces. BUT due to the requirements of serial, it also needs to somehow encapsulate more of the entire work than the first chapter of a novel might. It's a bit of a tightrope, and I often fall off. There's no checklist. There's getting the story started off in the way that the story requires, and then there's looking for ways to work more content into the interstitials to give more of a flavour of what the serial is really about.
Interesting. Thanks for that!

So, words/balloon, words/panel, words/page, I know the rules of thumb for those. What's your thinking on how many panels/page you go for these days? Also, how much thought do you put into the number of... call them "focal points," specific elements you're asking an artist to draw (a figure, an expression, a prop, an action/gesture, a background element, etc.)... in a panel or on a page?

(Forgive me, you've got a really amazing economy of motion in your work, and I'm trying hard to reverse-engineer it.)

What do you think of the work of, and the overall impact that other New Worlds writers like Michael Moorcock and M. John Harrison?

Oh my god, what a huge question. (Also, weirdly phrased.)

Briefly:

The Moorcock-edited period of NEW WORLDS... I wish I'd been around at the time.

I still think -- as troubled and cash-strapped as it was -- it's still the model of what a science fiction magazine should be. As Moorcock says, it was "the first British publication to run the work of M.C.Escher." That right there is what a science fiction magazine's territory should be, right? Eduardo Paolozzi lent his name to them. Look at a Paolozzi piece:

The impact of the writers? Look at Ballard. Everything looks like Ballard now. Norman Spinrad -- not only did he prefigure future tv just as clearly as Paddy Chayefsky, but he wrote a science fiction series that led to questions being asked about it in the House of fucking Commons. Is that even imaginable now? It's hard to think of a writer associated with New Worlds who wasn't influential in some way - Pamela Zoline, John Sladek, Brian Aldiss, Harlan Ellison, THOMAS FUCKING PYNCHON...

 Hi Warren,

I was gonna ask what happened to the 'Autumn Interrogation' thread. As always massive props to you for doing this. For someone who spends a large amount of time and money (which I really don't have) tracking down things like Lazarus or the Hellstorm run and then getting you to sign this stuff at conventions, it is so gratifying (and inspiring) to have this level of interaction with your fans and people interested in your work. I really mean this.

Right, ass kissing over..down to business.

Do you believe in aliens? I mean have they / are they visiting earth? Is there a cover-up? I have been tracking alternative news sites for about two years now and the more information I read about this from reliable sources (astronauts, nuclear physicists, aeronautics engineers, Intelligence/military personnel etc.) the more it really seems like their is some conspiracy afoot. Not to mention the obvious mathematical probabilities of infinite space/time, references to aliens in ancient texts etc. and the last 12 months have seen some really strange UFO occurrences (China airport) and scientific reports from sources like the Royal society and Stephen Hawking on this subject. Personally I don't believe in coincidences, but when I read your work it really fluctuates between incredible speculation / imaginative scope and the scientific logic of down-to-earth realism. Am I making sense here?!? Just trying to get a grasp on your personal beliefs.

The only other thing -I did ask last time and you didn't answer so I either you didn't read it or you thought it too personal to state here, but if the latter is the case tell me and I'll shut the fuck up)- is what does your g/f did for a living? (I am just genuinely curious).

Sorry for the long post but I haven't made my presence known for a while..
Thanks again.

 Hi Warren,

When you published SHIVERING SANDS, did you use publisher grade or standard paper? I ask because I'm working on a project that I think I'm going to use Lulu for. I'd like to use standard because it's cheaper, but I don't want it to feel and look like shit. I'm not really sure what the difference is, but I'm guessing it's more noticeable with color books than B&W. Fair assumption?

Thanks!

ETA: Also, sorry to hear you're sick. I just read your post about Santa Muerte... I find shrines to the Saint of Death all of the time when I'm performing cell searches... if you want, the next time I find one I can send you a picture of a prisoner's St. Death shrine. Interested?

EDit: If that sounded wierd... totally not intended. My girlfriend and I recently became interested in the concept of Santa Muerte last year after I found my first shrine, and then after seeing them depicted on Breaking Bad. Every one I find is unique, and littered with all sorts of offerings. I usually find them in the possession of "paisas" which are a relatively new gang of non-gang member illegal immigrants from Mexico. There isn't a lot of info out there about the "paisas", or their relatively new saint. They also seem to worship Jesus Malverde the "narco-saint" which I find really odd.

Are you there, God? Its me, Alan.

So, you've worked in a pretty wide swathe of media and formats, more so than most writers that I know of. You've done comics with a huge variation in length and scope, you've written a novel and plenty of flash fiction, you do magazine columns, you've done TV (referring to the sadly never-produced Global Frequency TV show), and you're closely interested in photography and music. I'm probably missing a few here.

So this leads me to my actual question: What does a Warren Ellis-penned live theatre production look like? Not asking would you do one, or why haven't you done one, just if you did, what would you do with it?

No. The Golden Age, if you like, was the first contact of Moore, Delano, Milligan, Morrison, Gaiman, Mills, Wagner etc with American publishing.

I'd respectfully disagree with that. I'd say the golden age began with Moore and ended with you. Or maybe Ennis. Can't remember which of you got started first and I'm too lazy to look it up. But, (and with no slight intended to anyone else) I consider the five really significant authors of the age to be Moore, Morrison, Gaiman, you and Ennis. Mostly because you each brought a truly unique to voice to the comic world. (I am speaking here, of American comics. My familiarity with the British comics world is limited.)

Do you believe that a writer or artist can make it in this industry without ever having to work for Marvel or DC?

Yes. Cursory research should throw up several examples of such. Several webcomics creators, for a start. Elsewhere, of course, there's Dave Sim, and Bryan Talbot (Bryan did a bit of work for DC, but it wasn't early on in his career or vital to his success), Mike Turner and a bunch of others I'm not thinking of right now because I'm actually doing something else. (Templesmith!) (Jeff Smith!)

DC, of course, did have a fully creator-owned wing in Vertigo, and Vertigo was a crucial incubator for a long time.

Not a movie but perhaps a short series between 10-26 episodes, standard 22 minutes long. For Russia to have landed on the moon first, Chelomei would have had to die around 1959. And even then... I don't know that Korolev's approach would have scaled up for translunar flight in the way von Braun's did. And Korolev was sick throughout the 60s, and Mishin just wasn't strong enough to support or protect him in the way that he needed. @Warrenellis- I meant no offense, Mr. Warren Ellis. I connect with your works based on my connection to what I feel is "abnormally absurd" compared to my droll and boring life. You're writing is so out there, it is akin the best kind of escapist narcotic, I could imagine. Reading your comics is like mental freedom from how shitty and dull life is, and yes I do get out the of the house often. I volunteer at the local Library and the local Bookstore/Comic shop, and socialize with people in person.

By abnormally absurd I mean: you go far and beyond addressing the point or showing it, you embrace it in the narrative and never hold back with the delivery, even if it means Giant String Space Viking Long Ships, Ray guns that melt people, using a lizard's irritable bowl syndrome to segue into food pellets being pooed out, Superheroes using a baby universe to pilot their giant "Bleed-fairing Carrier," Bombastic red heads who are experts in gunkata, or all the other things you write about.

I probably used the wrong wording, but I can't quite get the right words to explain the exact quirkiness of your work that attracts me so much. Sorry, rambling.

Are there any properties you wouldn't mind seeing turned into an animation? Never mind that (Western) cartoons tend to blanch at serious/adult/complicated material, so ignoring that would you like to see, say, PLANETARY as a cartoon? (Feel free to assume high production value; this is a daydream so I certainly assume it!)

I suppose live action would be most fun just for seeing actors carry the complexities your write on their faces. But it seems to me cartoons can carry out a lot more non-naturalistic settings and circumstances than live-action. Well...more easily, anyway. I suppose Jean-Pierre Jeunet could handle a time-moat. (And while his FreakAngels strikes me as intriguing to dream about, it wouldn't be *your* FreakAngels.)

Anyway, yeah. Your original work as 'toons? Thoughts?

So, from the thread on SVK to here:
@Warren:
I'm far from having the same erudition as you do, but I wonder if there's some kind of reading list you'd advise and how you even manage to read that much given your load of work.
How do you find the time to write, read and check your contracts , do your interviews and keep on being not only informed, but usually a step forward the rest of poor mortals?
Does a snackr account allows you to go with the whole flow on information?

Another one, regarding your writing: I have a tendency to believe that when you write a story, that is, a 20-pages comic-book, you find beforehand some weird idea (like one on the fruitbats with the Beast, or on zero energy, which you used a few times, or a few comments on that Japanese cannibal) and reshape it to give it a bigger place in your story. Is my view accurate? Do you know if Brian Vaughan works the same way, given his ability to add factuals in his stories?

Thank you!

 Ok, let's rephrase it:

1- how do you deal with your time? You have a lot to do, writing among others things, and still you manage to keep informed and read. Do you have some kind of tight schedule management tool?

2- How do you built a story? from a momentum into something bigger (like, you focus on one moment you want to tell, a joke, a fact, whatever) or the other way around: you work around the general shape of the story and then you add in specific elements (joke, factuals)?

Hope I'm clearer and a bit more relevent

thank you!
