This book is for anyone who wants an insider's view on witchcraft, paganism, the occult and other related topics. It's not a 'how to' guide or spellbook although it will provide some guidelines as to how to go about first finding such things, and then being able to tell whether they're any good or not. They're mostly not, but we'll get to that.
What I am going to do is present an honest approach, which takes into consideration historical research without being boring about it, and tries to cut through all of the media hysteria and present facts, opinions and information, without being an unrealistic fantasy version that promises empowerment but doesn't deliver.
There has been a lot of rubbish written about paganism and witchcraft, or Wicca, and even worse rubbish written about the occult. It's divided between scaremongering sensationalism that mostly has its facts wrong, and spellbooks or 'how to be a witch' type guides that are probably even worse. These are mostly a promise of wish fulfilment wrapped in slick marketing. They seem written to boost the egos of their authors by presenting them as wise and experienced witches and magicians who have the answers to young people's problems and offer spells to stop bullies or help with relationships. Most of them steal from traditions such as Wicca or other modern pagan traditions, without giving proper information about these, or when they do, they get it wrong for the sake of making them seem older or more exciting than they really are.
Nowadays, there is a lot of decent material about paganism, modern witchcraft and Wicca available, but its either academic or aimed at people who already have some experience. Good information used to be rare and hard to obtain, now it's swamped under loads and loads of rubbish of the sort I've already described. What I'm intending is that this book will be accessible, will cut through the rubbish and be something that once you've read it, you can safely recommend it to other people too.
Like several others I have met who are part of this 'scene', I've got a love for the unconventional, as well as a deep desire for spirituality and a connection to something deeper and bigger than just what we can see in front of us everyday. Earth based religions and magic seemed to fill this need, but many writers on this area give inconsistent information that's sometimes contradictory or which, if you've got a bit of experience, you can spot errors in. This has led many people to turn away from these paths, or to have serious doubts about them, which is a real shame. What I'd like to do is take the best information that we have, the most carefully researched history and present these in a readable and accessible way. I'm also going to go to people who have been a part of these traditions, who have spent time in them and grown up in them, but who aren't necessarily elders or leaders and ask to offer the benefit of their experience and knowledge, rather than pretending to be someone who knows it all myself.
