Welcome to the Draw Each Other thread for 2011.

As in previous years, the rules are simple.

1) Post any photo of yourself that you'd like to see become fodder for the artists of Whitechapel.

2) Photos from other threads including Self Portrait, Introduce Yourself and Saturday Night Open Mic are not for drawing.

3) Anything goes; in previous years we've had painted portraits on canvas, pencil and pen drawings, little busts sculpted from modelling clay, and digital art aplenty.

4) Don't be an arsehole, or the mods will close the thread.

You've linked to the page, not the image.

In flickr, click your image so it takes you to the image's own page. There above the image is a "Share This" button. Click that, then choose "Grab the HTML/BBCode". The flash is the proof I need to prove StSparky is not real. Always the same background, never looks at the camera, sometimes a disembodied hand holding a random object. Personally I think the innocent looking little girl who appears in some pictures is actually the controller and the random objects are a code sent to an unseen monkey overlord. I will send more details as they become clear.

@allana - I was wondering as I drew it if the ribbons could actually work that way in reality. I'm not sure the loops around the arms would. Maybe they'd have to be starched into shape, and pinned to the chest in front and shoulder in back.

It would be an awesome top! Though I wonder how long it could be worn before having to take the pins out.

@argos - how long did you wear your pins?

those needles are just the cheapo versions of real piercing needles (albeit usually smaller). they can stay in indefinitely, and aren't that hard to move around with if you shove the ends in some cork. the longest i've worn a set was about a day, though.

the shoulder loops are questionable, yeah. i think about suturing a lot - maybe that's a solution? (remember the Bjork video for "Pagan Poetry," when she's got pearls sewn to her skin? want.)

Oddbill, I only had them in for about 40min, though as allana said, you could leave them in much longer. They're not at all uncomfortable once in, only problem is if you don't leave enough space at the tip, the tip could get swallowed up once your skin swells up about 20min in, which happened to me when I first did it. The other danger is that by leaving them in longer, you are leaving am entrance for bacteria to get in, nut you're generally okay so long as you're in a fairy clean environment.

And agreed about it making an awesome top!! I was thinking just that when I first saw it, I might have to recreate it sometime :)

@DC - I've studied classical Japanese MA for about 35 years, mostly a very small and not well known system of jujutsu (actually a sogo budo that includes several weapons in addition to the grappling/throwing), but also have done MJER iai and am currently studying Shinto Hatakage Ryu iai and Shinto Muso Ryu jodo (the pic is from a SMR jodo gathering in Kashima, japan, at the Kashima Shrine).

Like I said, this was a quick hack job: all I did was Google for a beer bottle with no label, then opened it in PhotoShop, brought in the OddBill graphic on a layer, made a dark rectangle of black, warped it a bit on the top and bottom to get the curve of the bottle and stacked everything like I wanted it. I also airbrush darkened the edges of the label to make it look like it's wrapping around the bottle.

Ok, I have to explain this a little bit. First, I haven't picked up a pencil to doodle so much as a smiley face in months.
Secondly, I was two Jack and Cokes in when I started drawing. That trend continued. You can tell.
Thirdly, oh my dear sweet baby Jebus. Oda I am so so sorry for what I did to you.

OHMIGOD - I dug these pants and shirt out of my closet at my parent's place last night. 1) I'd forgotten how good they look individually. 2) I had never thought of combining them before. The dragon regrets any accidents which may or may not have occurred, which, if they did occur, it is pretty sure were perpetrated by someone or something other than itself. It suggests the possibility of a lightning strike or spontaneous combustion. In any event, it thinks we should move forward instead of focusing on the past, and it is just glad nobody sustained any serious injury in any accidents which hypothetically could have happened to someone in this dangerous day and age full of unexplained random fireballs, but which probably didn't...it also thinks that scorch mark will totally buff out... :)

@Ampersand - you're getting there. :) Just keep it up. People are a sonofabitch to draw, and the creators of art tend to be its worse critics. Most of this is because you can see how you think the drawing 'should have been' versus how it turned out. And no matter how good an artist is -- the mind isn't limited in the way a piece of paper is; it doesn't have to 'play by the rules'; so for the most part your mental comparison to what should've/could've been will be skewed. Don't be afraid to take your time, as well.

@mojokingbee Woo hoo! I love it when people do draw-each-other team-ups, and this one is terrific for the implied scenario alone, let alone that I'm in it! Great picture, and great use of the gas mask theme! Misato and Root have found their way to the hot zone despite the shadowy efforts of the government to deny it's existence. When they get there, only one of the engineers is left alive, and unable to leave... he is about to show them the true nature of The Project...

You are quickly climbing the stairs to the throne of skulls Sizer has erected... we'll have to come up with verb for what you do too. Mojokingbeed? Kingbeed? Mojoed? MKBeed? Whatever it is, keep it up!

Thanks heaps, folks. Dunno about the throne of skulls but I'm having fun with the sketchie threads and it feels good to be drawing everyday again. Takes me back to my year in London living in hostels and unfurnished flats with no TV and almost no net so I just keep drawing. I appreciate the opportunity to practice. Keep the pics coming and I'll keep sketching every so often.

@Comicbookbunny...colouring's actually my weakest skill. I just wing it most of the time. Gradient-fill's my friend since I'm too slack to colour my stuff properly. Colouring takes too long so I take shortcuts...actually my process is very shortcut-laden and it's still not fast enough.
@Oddbill...the concept was a no brainer with source material just fitting together. Incidentally, how'd you do your zombified pic? Was it just a standard photomanip job?
also, "mojoed" works for me for simplicity''s sake.

@Bankara - I don't have them lying around. They are carefully hidden, beneath the floorboards.

It's a plastic model I painted realistically years ago for a film shoot. You'd be surprised how useful it has been to keep around! There is always something that comes up every couple of months for which a human skull is the very thing!

My boyfriend has one skull in his apartment and I have 13 teeny tiny ones (about thumb sized) in various styles (one has a top hat!)

Anyway, I offered to model for a friend of mine for a god-awful fashion show (NOT my scene, and we waited around 6 hours doing nothing until the show started, which took all of 5 minutes x_x). At least I had cool hair & make-up, and discovered that curls work well with a mohawk. Anyway:

I thought everyone has skulls and bones around the house..... I do. Older photo (miss the green hair so much!) noming on my skull Lin She is a replica unfortunately the other bones in the house are real. Real human skulls are so expensive- and the cheap kind tend to be attached to things, so aggravating.
I've been trying to get more animal skulls that have not been "bleached" with paroxcide- it makes them smell awful after a bit.

@oddbill...man, you've given it more thought than I have. I only went with my gut feeling and chose accordingly and went for a noir feel. I had difficulty figuring out the team name...mind you, it was 1 am so maybe that had something to do with it.
Maybe I should go for a more colourful and fluffy(?) colour scheme. I use too much blacks.

I am so relieved you like it! - I thought I may have gone out on very tenuous limb with this. It actually started as a straight sketch - then the voices started :)

I called it the "patent Sizer Imagimatic" and was going to add a bronzed plate with instructions rather than the cheaply embossed text, but it got late and I thought I'd go with it as it is. Its a layered psd so its easy to alter.

Those are nifty sweet - I like how in some incredibly unlikely way you both seem to have a similar vibe to your rendering styles, even with totally different techniques being used.

kperkins, the way you did the eyes in yours is simultaneously Morpheus ala the Matrix, and alien, ala a lobster or whatever. Like how that works.

viol8tor, I'll be honest, I like the way you did my hat - it looks like it was made of bricks! True fact - that hat is made of PAPER of all the goddamned things. And is still in fine working order YEARS later. Oh, also - the cyclops wearing the tye-die in the background working the register was in fact a fine and proud Nordic queen of the Midwest, and she had enough faux hardware within reach of the cash to be sure NO ONE ever tried to roll that store. Including many more those grenades, which even as empty shells were heavy enough that I'd not want to be beaned with one if I could help it.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the last image.

It got a bit rushed at the end,- it was pressing towards 3am and I flung a background together because I couldn't be arsed vectoring up the smoke edges, I think by then I was too cross-eyed to see the texture repeat, I will fix it soon and post a better version as originally planned. I'll also post links the the full res versions as soon as I can find some space to host them from.

@Sizer - I've spent many years drawing textures so the surface treatment for the metal was the easy bit for me, its just everything else I need to master now :) I was tempted explain the thought process that resulted in that last pic, but I suspect that might spoil it a bit. I will post up the sketches soon. And I've just spent 4 day's camping in Wales so there may be some amusing fodder to post as well.

@Neila - I couldn't make Sharkpony's rainbow tail work in this pic, so imagine its swished the other way, but I did carry over the octopus to give Sharkpony some company!!

A really big thank you to everyone for the kind comments, you're all being way too kind!! Following my usual random approach I was sketching the most dramatic or dynamic poses from the source pics and it sort of came together.

@Sizer - I really rate your artwork in all its many styles so you cannot guess how chuffed I am you like it. Until recently I worked in the computer games industry, modeling environments and objects in 3dsmax etc. but I'd let my traditional skills stagnate so when the studio i worked for closed, I decided to sit back and start enjoying my art again, and Whitechapel and all its many contributors has really sparked the passion, I thought I was too old for that sort of thing! :). That said I think I am at least part cabbage!!

@Neila - I would be totally honored if you used it as a desktop, I'm genuinely relieved you like it, - Its scary enough drawing real people but including their creations as well!! - The original is in a higher res, but I can't squeeze them into my available web space at the moment, as soon as I sort an alternative I'll post some links. - If you do the sharkpony Tshirt's I will gladly buy one and wear it with pride!!! (I really think sharkpony could make a fantastic game character as well).

@OddBill - I think Octopus may be in love with Sharkpony!! (of course everyone loves sharkpony!!) - I suspect that after the initial showdown, events will force the protagonists to work together in the fashion of the best spaghetti westerns. I only hope someone frees Mojokingbee from the vortex tank first.

And a big thank you to everyone else who is providing such fine fodder, I love the hats, bearskins and gun toting poses, when the initial source is full of character the pictures compose themselves.

So I was going through all the pics. to find out what a Sharkpony is (very cool by the way Neila) & I found this pic of Agos. I think I actually wanted to do this one earlier but got distracted by other things. You know how it is. Let me know what you guys think. I'm really proud of this one so be gentle.
Sorry or mistaking you for Berserker, Glossolalia (thats such an odd name, I had to look at it like 3 time to make sure I spelled it right) I never looked at peoples icon. I didn't even know I could do that.
Yea Berserker I tend to get a little lazy when it comes to intricate work like how your hat is waved. Sorry. I particularly like the way the stubble came out. My first instinct was to do a Shaggy thing But I'm glade I did it that way.

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, well I've lurked around a bit, but this is my first post. My name is Pablo and I'm a 25 year-old freelance artist living in Scotland.
The standard of art really exceptional here but crucially, so is the sense of community. I'm looking forward to rolling my sleeves up and getting tucked right in.

@Dave, It's the real end of the books. I take it all over...

No really, HBO was doing a promo where they had the chair at spots on the east and west cost and took photos. By a fluke the staff from HBO who were taking the photos that weekend in Philly stayed at the place we run my monthly event at. They asked me and some of the talent we have to come down and get photos that Sunday. Not a lot of people could make it so it ended up being me and our MC of the event. So we ended up getting photos like this. They took so many of them (these are a few I liked the most) and kept telling us to get back up there to take more. It was a giggle and the photos for being taken where they were came out pretty good.

No art per se, but someone mentioned making a book, and frankly, I think that's

A) A Wonderful Idea

B) A pretty simple Lulu.com project --so much so that if people don't mind, I'd like to try it myself.
i. I realize i'm not a regular here, so will happily hand the reins to someone who is, or provide proof of authenticity, etc
ii. what charity would the money go to?
iii. should we set up a repository thread for the images?
iv. in my mind, the book has a short preface, is magazine-ish sized, (think Coilhouse magazine) and left side is art, right side is original picture.

@trini_naenae - as much fun as it would have been to perform in a play that was actually about ancient hebraic/canaanite pantheons, Baal is but the name that the main character presumably bestowed upon himself at some point. He is a poet in turn of the century Germany, and more or less a rockstar. Brecht wrote it when he was 20. His very first play.

Trying out a pogo stylus with an ipad. The sketch of @Davie was done in a note taking app called penultimate. It's not an art app, so it has very limited colors. There is no white color for the pen, for example, and the eraser is huge and can't be adjusted for size. The sketch of @dorkmuffin was done in a different app called Adobe Ideas. It has a lot better pen control. You can create custom colors of any kind using photoshop-like color palette tools, and the pen size is very adjustable. I did this one as about two hours of scribbling in different colors with the smallest line possible. In the end, I'm not sure I like the ipad as a sketching device, but it'll do in a pinch.

It was posted to an album with a tightly filtered group of people, and either one of them reported it, or Facebook decided to be a bunch of asshats and tell me that this is inappropriate. So I’m posting it all over the internet out of spite. And it was from the same photoset as another one I've posted here, so I thought it would be fun. @mojokingbee - the pogo stick was alright, it actually gave me a little better control than I was expecting, but I find it frustrating not being able to know where exactly the "tip" is going to be interpreted on screen from the rounded pad of the pen. Also, drawing with it for about 3 hours straight gave me a muscle strain in my wrist that I'm still feeling. That's probably more a question of how I was holding it, and I'll have to be more careful. I'm interested to try Wacom's Bamboo Stylus for the iPad and see how it compares.

And yes, I just used little scribbly lines. Two hours of little scribbly lines. When I realized I couldn't be precise, but wanted to capture the expression anyway, I figured if I used the incredibly little scribbly lines I could find my accuracy in statistics... i.e. - I would just scribble more where it looked closer, and over time the right things would emerge. This worked, but it is beyond tedious. I think you could probably write an algorithm that could do it.

Sorry for the poor quality. It's an ipod picture. If I ever get my scanner fixed and properly hooked up, I'll scan it, clean it, and colour it.
I also attempted to draw @davie, as the severed head, but it didn't turn out too well... plus, long hair... Oh well.

Once when I was a kid in high school at Plainwell you came to our class and did a small 'Career Day' thing about comics. Another time at Fanfare you were doing signed splash pages of 'Little White Mouse' (of which I have quite a few of those comics signed by you). And one other time when I had my artwork up at Water Street coffee joint I happened to see you in their having coffee and typing away on your laptop. Thanks for the kind comments everyone! @diello: Thanks! I use art markers on Bristol board for all my drawings. I wish it were more hi-tech than that, but I'm very old school with my equipment. Mostly because I can't afford programs like photoshop. Thanks for the interest!

@diello: Thanks a lot! I have found using smooth Bristol board is the best kind of paper for markers, almost no bleeding. Also Prismacolor art markers seem to bleed less than an average marker. I've not been able to blend as well, but starting with the lightest colors, then going over them with darker and darker ones has given me the best results. Hope that helps! Thanks again for the great compliments!

I'm very old school with my equipment. Mostly because I can't afford programs like photoshop.

i have the opposite problem. i already had photoshop, and now that i am broke i can not afford pens and markers so i do most my coloring these days on the computer.

@imaginarypeople: You do bring up a good point. I could probably afford to buy photoshop software if I saved all the money I would have spent on paper and markers through the year. In the long run it would be a good investment to eventually work with an electronic tablet and a good illustrator program. Though I do still enjoy the hands on feeling of a pen in my hand and ink on the paper. "You work with what you have" truer words have not been spoken.

@seb, yup it... lingers. I love the stuff, tho. It's slightly warmer in tone than India ink, which is nice for portraits. It also blends and overlays differently. Kraken Blood!

There's some truly awesome stuff here folks! Just been through the whole thread.
Here's some potential fodder. I'd just arrived in Thailand and been bitten by a spider on the eye almost immediately. On the downside, it took over a week to drain, but on the plus side I made sympathy friends.
