Or SPIT, as a previous regular once called it.

We're going to launch one of these threads a month. And down the months and years, we'll build up not only a mugshot parade of visitors to Whitechapel -- but also, for those who choose to participate monthly, there'll be a record of how we all change and grow (and in my case age horribly).

Obviously, I encourage participation from everyone, even if you're just joining the place. This thread is certainly NOT just for the old lags. In fact, the more new faces the better.

So. Take a photo of yourself and post it (if you're not sure how -- you put a photo on the web somewhere, a free hosting site like Flickr or Photobucket or your LJ gallery if you use LJ -- Blogger image hosting won't work -- and click the "img" button above to put the address of the image in, the http://) here.

I'll get to mine once I'm, you know... piss off, I'm busy...

Here I am, carrying over the "video self portrait" theme started in January.
Wish I could dazzle you with witty banter or amazing oratory skills, but all you get is me babbling on about the fun stuff I get to work on, which in a way IS an accurate portrait of me.
I realize ALL my hip/cool points will be lost because of this video, but dammit, all the popular kids are doing it...

And in case anyone is interested, the "nudity" on my wall (not PORN; I keep that in my hard drives), it is photography from my very talented friend Doug Neal. He does everything from hunky male fashion shots to ethereal, dream-like landscapes. Well worth checking out his galleries here.

Sizer you sound almost exactly how I imagined, your personality really does come through in your postings here. Oldhat you seem odd in the most fascinating way, good Uke playing. @icelandbob: Haha, you are right. And I actually wore that top in public at festivals this summer. Without wearing a bra. In the rain. Oh well, bygones. It does better as a pyjamas. And yes, I look absolutely wrecked and feel it too. But it's getting better. :)

Some people, both here and other places, have commented on my hair still looking very white even though I was dyeing it to resemble my natural hair colour. So the other day I took a picture of my roots (bloody roots!)... The colour didn't really take, but as one can see, my natural colour is still pretty similar (and also looking quite grey right now, yay). And anyway, I don't dare dye it one more time. As much as 1/5th of all my hair has broken off in chunks all over my head, especially in the crown area, resulting in "bangs" in the back of my head! I think I'll just leave the poor left-overs of my hair alone for a while...

Took this yesterday while attempting to get a rough measure of the snow during the blizzard:

As I've had a few people ask why, No yard stick was available, and the T-square of my roommate's was the closest equivalent-- she wouldn't let me use one of her swords to measure it. Go figure. ;)

For the curious, it was roughly 16-18 inches deep at that point, not counting drifts, all of which had come down in a handful of hours.

Okay, so I may not be able to draw or write stories like many of you can, but, I can own a hula hoop. This video is pretty sketch because 1) I haven't been practicing consistently for about 5 months (eek!), and two, it's in the living room, so the space I have is quite limited. These are the basic tricks I learned to do waaay back when I first picked up the hoop; I can do many more, and a lot more gracefully when I'm actually practicing consistently. Oh, and short shorts, which I only ever wear when I hoop (the hoop sticks best to skin, otherwise it keeps slipping. That's why all the for-hire hoop dancers dress like skimpy go-go dancers). @Fauxhammer waist hooping, knee hooping, one legged hooping, shimmy (when I brought it up, it), there was a bit of shoulder hooping but it quickly turned into chest hooping once I took my arms out, reversals, and the vortex. Names from moves can vary but those are all terms recognized by other hoopers. My style of hooping was freeform, though. Some people will do belly dance style or hip hop or whatever but I know none of those, so I just go with it.

@Labyrinthe my hair did that flip too, the other day (though it was more Final Fantasy hair), but it didn't stay for very long

@oldhat, next time you're in NYC you're gonna have to get mac and "cheese" with me then. They do vegan at this place as well as gluten-free (the reason I was able to go there). I got gluten free mac with cheddar cheese, red onion, and burger. Nomnomnomnom. I am gonna have to work my way through the menu. Time for my monthly appearance in these here pages. Final days of my 6 months of living out of a backpack and you can see I am not happy about it. Hard to believe that I am home again and to be frank I think I prefer only having two pairs of pants, 6 t-shirts, a jacket, and a scarf and my camera equipment. Seems like a pretty full life to me. Ok, so here's how I was dressed when I got something homophobic shouted at me from a car while I was riding my bike through the city today:

Not that it matters how I was dressed, but the level of bigotry, hatred and ignorance in this country still astounds me. These feelings were probably added to by my witnessing the police pulling over and searching a guy last night, in what seemed to be an act of racial profiling. Now, he was being a smartarse to the cops in question, which wouldn't help his cause, but he's likely so fed up with that kind of treatment that he couldn't help himself.

sorry for the lengthy post, but things have been fairly interesting of late.
at this moment, i'm supposed to be stressing out over streaming the games from the Deaflympics online from Slovakia, trying to make everything work, converting SDI to component, PAL to NTSC, all in realtime.
instead, the Deaflympics got cancelled ONE DAY before we were to fly out (and after half the athletes had arrived in Slovakia)

turns out the 11,000,000 Euros that were funneled into the games never reached the venues, hotels, or even transportation companies. it all went to the pockets of the chief of the Slovak Organizing Committee, Jaromir Ruda, who, two days ago, was busted at the border trying to flee into Hungary.

how do I fit into all of this?

The company i work for (volunteering at the moment) H3.tv happened to have two of our cultural reporters already en route to Slovakia when word the cancellation was announced. so, literally overnight we went from being a struggling online sign-language broadcaster, to a now-famous (in the deaf world, at least) investigative journalis broadcaster. not only are we the only international media team on location (far as we were able to determine) we are also the ONLY deaf media team investigating the fiasco, and broadcasting answers in International Sign (IS).

The two reporters, Dawn Jani Birley (Canadian now living in Finland) & Darren Frazier (American), are filming and investigating daily, and sending back on average 2-4 edited videos daily. they have no journailst experience, except for the occasional cultural videos.

the best part? Darren is filming it all with his new Nikon D7000 and a Litepanels light, while editing it on iMovie. he then uploads it to Slava's Dropbox, then over here in our ad-hoc press centre in our boss' Yorkville penthouse in Toronto (yup, we're struggling), which consists of me, Slava and our boss, Hannah, we then add the H3 logo in the corner using an alpha mask in quicktime, re-compress it with an Elgato Turbo HD hardware compressor, upload to Vimeo then embed into our site. We do staff meetings with our reporters via iChat.

Darren has almost NO experience filming or editing, and i had to read through his camera's manual i downloaded online and explain the basics via email, which settings to use, what shutter speed for which framerate, etc. he still hasn't gotten the colour balance theory locked down yet, but it's a minor issue at this time.

while solving technical issues, I also do most of the translations from IS to english, which is a struggle sometimes, being more fluent with ASL with IS being a fairly new language to me. we also have another consultant in Florida who used to be involved with international deaf organizations, and she cleans up my transcripts plus expands on some background information that i'm missing out on.

Because of this, Deaf people all over are getting timely answers on the fiasco (with occasionally lagging transcripts. fuck off.) where before the advent of easily accessible video technology, it would've taken years for all to get a straight answer about it, if ever.

@dispophoto - what I fantastic story! Of course it's terrible for the embezzlement and disappointment to have occurred, but what a cool position to find yourself in. I don't think I've ever heard of a clearer or better example of the way new media can enable reporting that maybe previously wouldn't have happened.

I forgot to mention our marketing aspect: facebook.
we take a frame grab and post the picture on our facebook page, then those of our deaf contacts (plus others) who are high profile plus have a large number of friends, we tag them to the picture and link it to our website.

It really sucks that this has happened, but as a former journalist in a field which includes a lot of flying around the world and editing stuff on the go, I also can't but wonder how accessible that is nowadays. You can whip up TV quality stuff easily with stuff that fits in your backpack and collaborate easily over the net in three continents. I think that it's just fucking awesome.

@Zo, if you don't mind the risk of frying electrical death then building yourself a ring light is surprisingly easy. I made an instructable when I made mine way back in the day.

The colour temp is definitely still very red even when you shoot on tungsten but for B&W it is perfect. I love the look of a ring light but what those things cost is criminal! This thing could be made better with higher powered bulbs and some diffusion but for what it is it works pretty well. It also doubles as a space heater.
