This February marks my end of production for the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series. I started working on B:TB&tB as one of the background painters in 2008 and about eight episodes in, I became the background paint supervisor. I plan to use this blog to do a postmortem of sorts and show a small portion of the background paintings I did for the show. I will to try to post at least one painting from every one of the 65 episodes of the series and to have a little commentary to go along with the work. Also, I am going to show some work that was never used for the show for whatever reason. Updates will be once a week until we reach the end of the series:

A Question for the Arists: I'm abandoning my more unreliable right hand and using only the (non-dominant) left in my mad notion of taking art classes. In my experience, there are two very important keys to getting better at drawing. There's the mental side of it; how do you interpret what you see and then selectively recreate it from your own perspective, and the physical element. Physically, drawing for me has been building up muscle memory and in turn confidence, which comes out in the line. I could see drawing with your left hand being VERY good for the mental aspect as its forcing you to think from the right of the page to the left (so not to smear, hope that makes sense) vs left to right with your dominant hand. I've found that most things that take you out of your comfort zone tend to be the most beneficial. @ Rachael Tyrell - (assuming it doesn't crap out completely)? I like working with both hands but I ran into a serious problem when I tried to use my non-dominant left exclusively. The left couldn't handle the work (the right has had a life time of muscle development that the left doesn't). About a month into the experiment I started getting inflamed tendons and ended up in physical therapy for 6 months. My advice is to be careful, stretching and squeeze exercises. The injury came out of almost nowhere and happened really fast, I never expected it.


I made a bunch of these monsters using both hands, first I'd draw thin outlines really quick and scribbly with my off-left hand, then I'd work them up with thicker lines and details using my dominant right.

if your asking whether or not you can proficient drawing with your opposite hand because you have to (for whatever reason) then the answer is "yes". I know personally two that have done so. also, after a stroke, Frank Frazetta learned to draw with his left hand. Frazetta doesn't count though because he was a drawing god.

It served as 'the ... It served as 'the great leveler', because it put every student at the same level, and it was a great warmup tool for long drawing sessions. When I do life drawing, I find that working with my wrong hand gives me greater accuracy in terms for judging angles and exploring the negative space. Really cool portrait stuff you've been posting here lately, nice stuff :)

Well, my right hand is dominant, but my right side has suffered more symptoms than my left from a neurological issue. My right hand, even though is used more often, has less muscle mass, less strength, aches, and has some issues with waning fine motor control (though is still intrinsically better than the left). After using my right hand for a long period of time, it no longer grips well. This is something that has slowly worsened with time. I don't have a diagnosis, but doctors say I likely won't have one, and even if I do, it's not likely that I'll get better. It's probably an issue with brain damage of some sort, since my vision is effected as well. Along with this, I've got comrehension issues. Therefore, I was wondering if using my left hand would perhaps improve my comprehension and visual accuity by getting different parts of my brain to pick up the slack.

But also... My paintings have all been done with both hands out of neccessity, since once I get on a roll I don't want to stop, and that means I've GOT to switch off hand to hand. It works ok with my loose style and novice level understanding of painting, but I'd like more control, even within that loose and heavy style I like so much.

Therefore, I've been trying to figure out how to proceed, and I'm wondering if i DO train myself to only use my left hand, if I can get good enough to actually surpass where I was with my right.... and if I continue like that, if my right hand will still be better than the left... and hoping that if I might end up painting with my left, and then use my (weakened but still dominant) right occasionally to do the bits that need particular control. I think it might be worth pursuing strengthening your left hand for sure. Plus you might be surprised how fast your mind compensates for the shift. Kevin Mellon: To be perfectly honest, that's more of a sketch that just became a coloring exercise because I was stuck on something else and used it to kill time.
My actual idea bashing, as you describe yours, is with a big mallet and tongs.

The third in a series of weird Jesus paintings ("shaves" and "waves" (where he was in a dress at a beauty pageant...) being the other two) for my roommate's boyfriend. Running out of funny things that rhyme with "saves". And a t-shirt graphic for a local band. I didn't design it; I was given a kind of sketchy drawing and asked to fix it up, so I re-drew the entire thing, but basically left everything where it was, layout-wise. Supposed to be on some shirts at a show this evening, but they didn't get them made in time? I don't really know. We'll see if it ever happens, I guess... But an interesting, headache-inducing crash course in trying to do a picture with only 4 colors. Couldn't quite get the leaves greener than that. I found an old set of (mostly corroded jars of) Windsor Newton Brilliant Designer Water Colours, mostly neons and mega brights.
It has been a while since I painted in colour, and I wanted to see if some of the paints still worked (or were salvageable) so I did this little piece.

Here's what I was able to get done today for the Magician from Mars Remake/Remodel: will eventually be textured and colored, mostly as an experiment in combining the two practices (I've been focusing on grayscale tones and textures for the last few months, and need to practice my coloring skill in a bad way).

There are just a couple of minor things, but in my version above I have tried to make it easier to compare distances by duplicating the scale for each of the stars. I've also knocked down most of the text by about 75%, this is to make the piece a bit less cluttered and hopefully easier for people to parse.

I also think it might read even better if you were to have the constellations at the top and then the distances running top to bottom underneath it. It might not be as conventional, but it would tell more of a story (here are the constellations you recognise, but did you know...?).

Had to change methods with this one, as there was way more stuff in the pic and it was all so damn small. So after painting on the colors, I just drew the black outlines with a Pigma Microcon pen, which I love, instead of doing it with a brush, like inking. Time saver, for sure. I feel like my style is bending into Doonesbury territory, though, which is weird (the noses in particular...).

I kind of threw a hissy over a university based exercise and turned it into the start of a series of work I've been contemplating getting off the ground for a little while now. I've listed the theme as domestic violence but its more over reaching than that in intention, just can't quite get my insomnia addled brain to think up the right words to explain it.

Materials were really restricted by the brief for the university side of things so these will be redone sometime soon once I gather up what I need.

Miranda- I have had tons of stuff published over the last 12 years, but most of it is in the educational/ESL sector. If you do my name as a search on Amazon or other international book sellers, you might see a list of a few dozen graphic novels that I've done for Scholastic and some others pop up, as well as some small press stuff for SoundAndVision publishing out of Toronto..
