Regarding:are you referring to the "drawing with the right side of the brain" theory or are you asking about whether or not you can get proficient drawing with your opposite hand? ... if your asking whether or not you can proficient drawing with your opposite hand because you have to (for whatever reason) then the answer is "yes". I know personally two that have done so.
and:(assuming it doesn't crap out completely)? I like working with both hands but I ran into a serious problem when I tried to use my non-dominant left exclusively. The left couldn't handle the work (the right has had a life time of muscle development that the left doesn't).
Well, my right hand is dominant, but my right side has suffered more symptoms than my left from a neurological issue. My right hand, even though is used more often, has less muscle mass, less strength, aches, and has some issues with waning fine motor control (though is still intrinsically better than the left). After using my right hand for a long period of time, it no longer grips well. This is something that has slowly worsened with time. I don't have a diagnosis, but doctors say I likely won't have one, and even if I do, it's not likely that I'll get better. It's probably an issue with brain damage of some sort, since my vision is effected as well. Along with this, I've got comrehension issues. Therefore, I was wondering if using my left hand would perhaps improve my comprehension and visual accuity by getting different parts of my brain to pick up the slack.
But also... My paintings have all been done with both hands out of neccessity, since once I get on a roll I don't want to stop, and that means I've GOT to switch off hand to hand. It works ok with my loose style and novice level understanding of painting, but I'd like more control, even within that loose and heavy style I like so much.
Therefore, I've been trying to figure out how to proceed, and I'm wondering if i DO train myself to only use my left hand, if I can get good enough to actually surpass where I was with my right.... and if I continue like that, if my right hand will still be better than the left... and hoping that if I might end up painting with my left, and then use my (weakened but still dominant) right occasionally to do the bits that need particular control. Eh? -

I think it might be worth pursuing strengthening your left hand for sure. As other people have said, its going to get to think about angles and shapes differently, while also giving your free reign to surpass the strength of your right hand at some point in the future. Plus you might be surprised how fast your mind compensates for the shift. If you can get past the initial frustration, you'll probably come out a better artist in the end. -
I made a second pass at my most recent drawing in Photoshop, felt like it was lacking a certain zest. Pretty pleased with the dot patterns and the tone. Gives it some depth methinks. -
@Rachæl Tyrell, my better half is a Speech Language Pathologist (Speech Therapist), she works with stroke patients who have very similar symptoms, hand strength, coordination, vision, comprehension, etc. Maybe finding one in your area could get you some better answers on how to regain some of these things. Myself I've always been ambidextrous, I paint with whatever hand feels right at the moment, but mostly draw with my left unless I'm using a computer mouse then I favor the right. Oddly enough while I bat and golf both ways I can't throw a ball with my left hand to save my life (I look like a 7 year old girl with a nervous disorder) Can throw a frisbee with both hands though if anyone is still listening.

The Brighton Life-Drawing Sessions have become a victim of their own success - so full of people this evening that I was drawing with my elbows squashed to my sides, and my drawings of the 20- and 40-minute poses suffered badly as a result. Still, I liked this one of a 5-minute pose:
