According to Jim Rose, the trick to eating glass is to grind it up into sandy grit that doesn't harm the intestines. He doesn't recommend trying it yourself as glass is extremely hard on the teeth. -

(I googled this, and apparently this story has been around for some years, see this one from 2007 http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/213294/Man_Killed_by_Pet_Spider_Eaten_by_Creepy_Crawlies I wonder if it's true at all or this online news sites are just reposting someone's tall tale)
