The quality of a writing group is entirely down to the people in it. *shrug*

I've started writing for Maxim, and possibly an MTV Crash gig. This is nice, because AOL closed my primary client site last week.

Now if only I got home before 10 o'clock on any given night to tackle my freelance to-do list.

Nice! Can you tell us what you'll be writing for Maxim or are you in the grips of NDA?

Hey guys, thanks once more for all your advice and stories about writers' groups, it was very valuable and totally helped me deal with the pre-group nerves. The experience went very well - I think this is what my writing has needed for some time. Anyone interested in hearing a bit more about how it went, I blogged about the experience over here.

Also, congrats Brendan! Will the columns go online too?

I'm currently writing a one shot.

It's called "The Fear of Spiders." It's an interesting premise. Interdimensional cops vs. a giant spider god. great stuff.

You know, for a moment there, I thought Brendan's profile picture/motion comic thing was an ad for Dr. Zoidberg as an action hero. Then my mind exploded from how awesome that would be.

Currently attempting to sort 34k words of notes on a project that's been with me since quite a while (originally it was born as a "hey, all these ideas are kinda overlapping and I could make a nice shared world/ongoing series out of that" kind of thing) and then it morphed into my first attempt at webcomics.

I've been on and off on this thing for roughly a decade (since the first writings were done in polish and I switched to english pretty much right after switching to pc) and it's about goddamn time to DO SOMETHING with this.

So what I'm trying to do is to write out a somewhat loose timeline of events, the beats that I need to hit to arrive at the planned conclusion, and flesh out the world a little, and then hit the ground running.

So far kinda failing at it cause the amount of notes is... well...huge, haha. But I know I need to do this. If I keep it sitting in this state for another year, I'll end up with another pile of notes to add and that will make it even harder.

I suck at deadlines. Was supposed to submit two columns on a game yesterday and have written... zero. okay, admittedly today is zombiejaundice day, but I should have done something...

Thanks, all. My assignments will be entirely online, but I have to keep 'em ziplipped for now. I'll let you know when they're up.

Writing groups, good or bad, have this universal recommendation to them: they make you get the work done. All that other Life Stuff that loves to interfere gets stepped on when you have to complete the assignment by tomorrow evening.

    My new play NEXT

    NEXT

had its opening night on Saturday.

"In NEXT, a mobile whorehouse is brought to an American army encampment in Europe during WWII. Its presence brings to the surface issues of racism, sexuality, and the fear of impending death. "

    Family fun and whatnot.

If any whitechapelers are in the NYC area and are interested in a night of theatre chocked full of obscenity, blasphemy, and various states of undress, I would be happy to buy a post show round at a local bar.

Writing something for a workshop I'm doing at College. It's pretty fun so far.

Novel is just shy of fifty-thousand words and I think I'm hitting the "It's crap, it's all crap!" part of the process. Definitely dragging and I didn't get any work, other than some editing, done on any shorts this past week. Meh.

Oh crap. I just realized that a national scifi/fantasy novel competition closes in the end of March. Now I have a deadline to finish the half baked novel project.

Why am I feeling massively enthusiastic and totally screwed at the same time? :P

Because there's little like a deadline to light a fire under your ass?

So far tonight I've done fifteen hundred words and I'm planning on staying up at least another two hours to keep working. Novel just crossed over the 50k mark tonight and is coming up on the half-way point of the plot, I should reach it somewhere around fifty-five to fifty-seven thousand words. After that it's all downhill, arms up in the air, screaming at the top of your lungs as you realize the breaks on the rollercoaster don't work.

    @RenThing

The thing is, I've written for living for over a decade now - articles for magazines and newspapers, that is - and I work very well with deadlines. I've been complaining that writing long pieces of fiction has been hard because there's no clear deadline or incentive in the end, and now I lost both of those excuses :)

Not complaining, mind you. But, frankly, slightly terrified about having to put my money where my mouth is :)

That's one reason I like the Weaponizer serial schedule. Knowing that I have two weeks to get the next installment in is a nice kick in the ass.
  9.  (9490.17)
Do a lot of people here write for weaponiser? I sent them a boozed up gonzo story but I don't think it's really their cup of tea. Fantastic site though.

I'm writing a sci-fi piece based around some of the drug abuse i've seen and experienced. Anybody aware of how they feel about stories of drug abuse?

What do people think of this advertisement for a ghost-writer? I have knowledge of that aspect of writing.

Yo stephen - the boozed-up gonzo story is going to be published, I just haven't replied to your email yet, sorry. For the record, we accept all types of stories, from historical fiction to romance to horror.
