For those not stateside, there's currently a rather large storm moving across the northern half of the eastern US. Last I checked, it was stretching from western South Dakota to New Jersey, from International Falls, MN to St Louis to Virginia to upstate NY.
According to weather.com's report, there is lots of ice and slush in the southern parts of the storm, and snow falls up to 12 inches in some areas. High winds too -- gusts up to 45 mph in the midwest. It's supposed to hit my area (near Saratoga, NY) at some point on Sunday and make a general mess of things.
I, for one, am not looking forward to shoveling tomorrow.
" . . . the biggest news Thursday at the National Weather Service offices in Portland was the approaching "monster" Pacific storm that's going to bring potentially damaging winds and widespread flooding to the region Sunday into Monday and Tuesday. The size and scope of the storm -- which has tapped into the energy of typhoons Mitag and Hagibis . . ."
MITAG . . . and HAGIBIS?
Ya know, if you're going to lose a weekend to flooding, wind, and rains, there's at least a kind of comfort in the fact that it sounds like a side-effect of a grudge match between eldritch weather-gods.
I have to say, I love the snow. We usually get at least one lunatic snowstorm that stops the city (Denver) from functioning for a couple days. However, true to form the bars in what has been called the Drunkest City in America often stay open. So there's usually some sledding followed by heavy drinking and a cold walk home. Plus there's the added bonus of feeling like you're facing off against the primal forces of the cosmos and winning every time you trudge through a four foot drift to get inside your local dive.
Feh, I'm in St. Paul(Minnesota) and this storm has nothing on the winters I grew up with in the Northern part of the state. Heck, I've been out and about the better part of the day, work in the early afternoon and out for a movie tonight, and I don't think there's much more than 4-5 inches out there yet(and I'm now out of the downtown bubble that I lived in the past 4 years). The only real problem with it is that it's the first real storm of the year and of course every dumb fuck's forgotten how to drive in snow, especially with light winters the last few years.
For reference 9:30am vs 4:00pm:
No proper evening shots because my camera sucks at night(and I'd grabbed dead batteries to replace dying batteries :|), but I should be getting some nice shots of the snow on the river once daylight rolls back around...
And yes, I love snow too, I just hate the cold that comes with it, as I have no body mass to insulate against it.
Minneapolis, here. Loving the snow. I'm originally from Upstate NY, so 6 inches ain't nothin'. Plus, at least when it's snowing, here, it's because it's warm* enough to snow.
It was very dead at work and we had a snowball fight. But nobody would take me up on my dare to chuck iceballs at the valet guys for the yuppy bar across the street.
Here on the Lake Huron shore in Michigan we got several inches less than we were warned about, and no freezing rain yet. Apparently, my cardiovascular condition precludes shoveling. My wife's doing just fine with it though. I'm feeling kind of emasculated...
Oh joy. I love when it starts snowing before all the leaves are even off the trees. Liking raking leaves doesn't suck enough. And it really is amazing how little snow it takes to turn bad drivers into horrendous drivers.
Rain, rain, rain here in Western, PA. I've not seen the forecast for the week; I imagine we'll see snow before too long. I like snow but I don't like driving in it...there are just too many people out there on the roads. It's no fun anymore.
