I had some pretty high hopes for the Cap movie (Joe Johnston isn't a great director, but I still love The Rocketeer, and a period Captain America is exactly in that wheelhouse), and the Super Bowl spot actually exceeded them.

Seriously: LOOK AT THE HOWLING COMMANDOS (specifically Dum Dum Dugan)! There were rumours that The Invaders were also going to be in the movie, but there haven't been any pictures of them yet, and no sign of them in the TV spot. Between the Howling Commandos, Red Skull, the Cosmic Cube and HYDRA, I'm not sure how they'll fit them in.

Thor looks pretty exciting. I think at the very least, it'll be an interesting movie to watch, particularly because 1) it's directed by Kenneth Branagh, and 2) they seem to be going for some sort of Kirby-esque "gods as science fiction concepts" type thing, as opposed to fantasy/mythology. We'll see how it goes.

Captain America I'm a little less certain about. Hugo Weaving will probably be great, as he usually is, but I'm not sure what to think about everything else yet. So I guess I'm just hoping for the best on that one.

I've never read a single comic about either of them, but the cast alone will get me to go see Thor. I know almost nothing about the character or storyline, though. How much is it actually about Norse mythology, vs being a standard superhero story?

When I was a kid, I read about Captain Britain, rather than Captain America. I didn't follow Iron Man either but thought the movie was a hoot.

Well, I do know a little about each. I watched enough episodes of the Marvel Superheroes minimal-movement "cartoon" to know the basic set-up for Thor and Cap.

It seems, from the trailer, that the movie has dropped the notion that Thor has a secret identify as a frail college professor.

Not really interested in Thor, at least the comic book version. I also have to say I like what they did with Cap's costume. Doesn't look too outlandish to me. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Also, what I'm really looking forward to is the last minute or so of film, right after the credits, where they hint at the next film/Avenger/character and I go, "Oh my god! The Thor movie is supposedly running off the ULTIMATES story line rather than the traditional classic Marvel fare. Basically it's this: No one knows where he came from, people think he's insane and used to be in a mental institution, and he stole "super soldier equipment" to get his power set. Spoiler:
(Later of course it is revealed that this was all because of Loki, and everyone learned to STFU about Thor when he summoned the rainbow bridge into New York and called thousands of dead Norse soldiers to his aid.)

The CA trailers aren't interesting me so far, and nothing I've read about the production really gets me excited. IMHO what makes Cap special is the character, and we've got a long history of comic book movies that say characterization largely doesn't work thru a mask. Frankly, I don't think Chris Evans has the chops to pull it off, even (or especially?) with a Whedon script.

The Thor trailers aren't much better, but after seeing some interviews with Hemsworth, Hopkins and Portman, I'm more optimistic. Hemsworth described walking onto the Asgard set with Hopkins, both in full costume. They looked at each other, grinned, and said something to the effect of it being the most majestic setting ever. He quickly added that the film lives up to the set. :-) And when Branaugh is on his game, he's freaking great.

Besides, any film that upsets white supremacists is OK by me.

If you ask me the Boss Badass that Thor has to take down at the end of the film, if its that Gort looking robot thing, seems pretty lame.

I forsee a bit of an anticlimax when that thing steps in

The Destroyer is the act 2 action set piece. Loki is the climactic fight. The structure (at least as far as I can suss out from the trailers) is: Act I:
Asgard: Thor, Loki, and the Warriors Three go to Niflheim and start some shit with the frost giants, Odin declares Thor unworthy and kicks him out.
Act II:
Thor on Earth. Scuffles with SHIELD agents around Mjolnir and other hi-jinks ensue. Loki sends The Destroyer to Earth, de-powered Thor fights it, thus regaining worthiness, recovers Mjolnir.
Act III:
Thor goes back to Asgard to kick Loki's ass. Returns to Earth to protect people. Roll Credits. Post Credits Avengers Tease: Nick Fury tracks down Thor and asks him to join the team.

Thor looks like a remake of the He Man movie from the 80s and Captain America looks like a paint by numbers action flick.

I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised since Iron Man 1 was pretty entertaining. I can't say that for their other flicks, which mere mediocre through and through.

Marvel have certainly embarked on an impressive project. Essentially attempting to establish 4 movie franchises leading to an unprecedented celluloid crossover. Whether Thor or Cap are going to be good movies in their own right, who can say. They all have the potential to be absolute stinkers. I don't think I was the only one expecting Iron Man to be shite. But, luckily it ended up being a pretty decent blockbuster. I'll watch em as I think it's really interesting what Marvel are trying to set up, and I'll probably forgive them a few mistakes along the way. But the Avengers film is where it's really at for me. Whedon, don't fail us now!
