My first love was science fiction and the weird. So this week we shall do this.

I know there are a bunch of novelists in the field circulating around here. Time for a roll call on Whitechapel. Show yourselves, tell me what you do, provide links to work and information and purchasing where possible. Say hello.

DO NOT just post huge chunks of your fiction, as many offenders (usually people who were not actually being paid to write books) did last time. Those will be edited out and your accounts here will be disabled.

Begin.

-- W

It's available on Amazon (e-book 2.99USD, p-book 7.15USD) here

My second book is a steampunk adventure treatment of George Orwell's "1984", called "1884". It's a cross between Orwell and Verne. I'm currently in negotiations with the Orwell estate over publishing rights.

My third novel is called "The Hidden Institute". It's the story of a boy living in a neo-Victorian world, who enrolls in a forbidden school that trains commoners to blend in with the nobility. It's a little Harry Potter, and a little Henry Higgins. "The Hidden Institute" should be coming out in podiobook, e-book, and p-book format in the next few months.

For more information, check www.brandg.com. It's an attempt to do a climate changed future without being all doom and gloom.

Sounds of Soldiers is a travelogue through one city after a war started by a Palin-like President who saw imaginary enemies everywhere. It's not a post-apocalypse tale, more an examination of good old British make-do-and-mend after the global balance of power changes completely. It's available in paperback from Lulu.com, for the Kindle from Amazon UK or Amazon US and for most other ereaders through Smashwords. There's a good sized chunk of the story available as a preview from Smashwords if you want to try before you buy.

My current work-in-progress is a horror/action comedy which plays with some of the conventions of 80s slasher films and I'm planning a crime tale with multiple, hyperlinked strands that should work best online or in ereaders.

Hi, I'm Wil Wheaton. I write narrative non-fiction, and I play various bad people inside the magic talking box.

I've always wanted to write fiction, but I've been intimidated by the whole idea. Recently, I decided to suck up my fears, and I published a very short collection of very short stories called The Day After and Other Stories. It was very well-received, and nobody complained about paying for it, so when I wrote another short sci-fi story, Hunter, I released it as a pay-what-you-want (yes, even zero) downloadable ebook in three DRM-free formats.

So far, the experiment has paid off - literally. I've earned way more than I would have if I'd sold it to a magazine, one to three bucks at a time. It's been downloaded (and hopefully read) a few thousand times, and I've heard a lot of positive feedback from readers, many of them asking me to expand the story so they can see more of the world. That's pretty awesome.

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to pimp my stuff without feeling gross, Warren.

It has film noir golems, ninja vampires, wise guy werewolves, cannibal bikers, monsters from the Lovecraft Mythos (Shub-Niggerath, for those who care), a dog who can make coffee and Filipino stick fighting. Also, there are jokes.
I should also mention that the second volume, DEATH BLOWS, is centered around comics. Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and the use of comics as a magic system figure heavily. There are appearances by a vampire version of Neil Gaiman and possibly even mention of a certain Mr. Ellis. People die in horrible ways, some of them inspired by the old Batman TV show. The first volume is DYING BITES and the most recent is KILLING ROCKS. Available on Amazon and wherever fine crap is sold.

I'm Ben Peek, a Sydney based author of just general weirdness, occasionally with an experimental bent. I'm the author of the autobiography Twenty-Six Lies/One Truth and the dystopian novel Black Sheep as well as a bunch of short fiction around and about.

My latest book is a co-written novel with Stephanie Campisi entitled Above/Below:

It's two novellas on a flip side book about a city that lives in the sky and a city that lives on the ground. I wrote Below, which is about the people on the ground. I guess maybe this isn't the best rundown of it, so I'll drop the blurb in behind it which explains it a little better than me in my I just woke up fuck you all state:

A city has fallen from the sky.

In the wreckage, two men – Devian Lell, a window cleaner in the floating cities of Loft, and Eli Kurran, a security guard in one of the polluted, ground-based cities of Dirt – will find their lives changed.

Devian, who has done what few in the floating landscape have by stepping outside the sanctuary of his home, will be drawn into the politics of Loft, as he is recruited to be the assistant for Dirt’s political representative. On the ground, Kurran, still mourning the death of his wife, tries to remove himself from the violent politics of Dirt even as he is blackmailed into providing security for the diplomatic representative of Loft, a woman three times his age, and the oldest living person he has ever met.

A tale of two cities, the stories Above and Below make up two halves of another in the TPP Doubles series. Written by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek, designed to be self-contained and complete as individual narratives, the two parts can be read in either order, yet also form a single narrative that has been intricately woven and designed to create a single, novel length story. It is a work that suggests not a single way of reading, but rather two, with conflicting morals that will continue to test the reader’s certainty in who, in the cities of Loft and Dirt, is in the right.

It's from the independent press Twelfth Planet Press out of Western Australia and is, honestly, this disgustingly cute book that goes for thirteen bucks. It's pretty cool, and it needs you love, so feel free to tell you friends about it as well.

Link for the book.

Hi. John Underwood here. I'm a long way from getting paid to write books, and a bit intimidated by the company I find myself in here. However, I'm typing this anyway and if in the morning I ask myself what I was thinking, I can take comfort in knowing that whiskey was a factor.

The weirdest and either best or worst thing I've ever written can be peeked at for free on my blog. The short version: in a future America ruled by the Baptists, a young man named Jimmy Stick is deemed spiritually lacking and therefore eliminated by a laser shot from space (God's Lightning, you know). He is then replaced by a robot programmed to quote scripture and lead a life of righteousness.

The first bit can be read here; it covers the relationship of the robot with Jimmy's girlfriend - who, by the way, has not realized that her boyfriend has been replaced by a robot. The scene is being narrated to Jimmy (apparently dead) by "God" as they smoke radioactive space weed grown on the dark side of the moon.

The next bit is available over here, and involves the Robot Jimmy meeting his creator and later discovering what aerosol ether can do to his internal whirring bits. Writing a drug-induced robot orgasm was perhaps the pinnacle of my life.

Thank you if you take a look, even if you don't like it. And thank you, Mr. Ellis, for this chance to whore myself.

I'm J David Osborne, and a few months ago the awesome Swallowdown Press put out my first novel, BY THE TIME WE LEAVE HERE, WE'LL BE FRIENDS. It's set in a Siberian gulag and it's got esophagus demons and cannibalism.

Here's a better description, from the back cover:

Siberia, 1953. Stalin is dead and a once-prosperous thief named Alek Karriker is feeling the pressure. Trapped in an icy prison camp where violent criminals run the show, betrayed by his friends and his body, Karriker is surrounded by death and disorder. Bizarre Inuit shamans are issuing ever-stranger commands that he must obey. Opium is running scarce and bad magic is plentiful. Razor-tooth gangsters can smell Karriker's blood and they plan to murder him more than once. The only option: ESCAPE.

Enlisting the aid of an aging guard, a cold-blooded killer, and a beautiful, murderous nurse, Karriker must now secure his getaway by finding a "calf": a gullible prisoner to be cannibalized when the tundra is at its most barren. As the vice grows tighter and life in the gulag becomes increasingly surreal, Karriker must hurry to find his mark and convince him...

BY THE TIME WE LEAVE HERE, WE'LL BE FRIENDS

Here's the cover, by the amazing Alex Pardee:

Here's a link to the Amazon page.

Here's my blog.

And please feel free to add me on Facebook (James David Osborne) and Twitter (@jdavidosborne).

I really dig this thread! The whoring is something I'm still learning to do, and this kind of go-ahead makes it easy. Thanks for this space!

Hey there, I'm Patrick O'Duffy. For several years I wrote about demons, vampires, monster hunters and pirates for RPG companies. These days I'm striking out on my own.

The spiritual gravity inside the Hotel Flamingo is strange (some say damaged), and one symptom of this is that time bleeds away from everyone that steps through the smoke-stained doors. One moment in ten falls away from you, one tenth of every day, transformed into a waxy yellow buildup on the floors and walls of every room.

Specifically, right now, I'm striking out with the novella Hotel Flamingo.

The autopsy revealed the hermaphroditic secrets of Tiresias Saddlefoot, two parents in one; a search of his parent's room revealed the clothes, the makeup, the internal contradiction and the will leaving him the Hotel Flamingo and the money to run it.

Hotel Flamingo is a mosaic novella formed from 22 vignettes about 22 different characters that make up one inter-mingling story set in a strange hotel, where normal is a dirty word and the skin of the world occasionally tears enough to let a little blood dribble out like sanity from your ear.

You wake up one day and realize that you spend all your drunk time doing stupid things and all your sober time feeling guilty for them, and that's when you make the choice, flip the switch to full sobriety or full drunkenness, responsibility or freedom.

It's a story that involves poisoned dreams, pirate radio, false magicians, Lovecraftian horrors, meth dealers, destiny, the search for meaning, schizophrenia, midgets, fictional angels, hermaphrodites and a bunch of other stuff. If you don't like one idea, that's cool; another will come along two pages later.

I've self-published Hotel Flamingo as an ebook through Smashwords, where (TOTAL FUCKING SHILL ALERT) you can buy it for just $2.95.

(It's also available from Diesel, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Sony and the Apple iBookstore, in whatever format you fancy. The Kindle Store version is still in progress, which is kinda annoying, but Smashwords and Amazon are negotiating.)

Jesse Fortnoy doesn't know the truth, but he knows that there is never just one truth, that facts are born from nothingness to fight it out in the backstreets of our minds until one claims the championship belt and eats the loser, it doesn't matter who wins, as long as there's a fight, popcorn and sawdust and cheap seats, follow the circus, see the world's fattest semotician, be amazed by the Vast Play of Ideas in this Fleshy Cockpit, every child wins a prize!>

As an experiment, so far, it's not exactly a complete success, as it's selling pretty slowly and I struggle with the whole self-promotion thing - but hey, fuck it, failed experiments still yield results, and it's a learning process I can use when it comes to the next e-project (the anthology Godheads, which involves people turning into Franz Kafka novels, smokable gods, the ghosts of ghosts and other ideas that don't make much sense), which I'm hoping to finalise and publish in the next few weeks.

And and and the ands occur simultaneously and in sequences, like a string of firecrackers tossed down a spiral staircase, like dominoes thrown into the air and landing each on their edge, like love and death and fate.

The first 10% of the novella is available to read for free at Smashwords, which is enough to read the first two vignettes and a snippet of the third. Or, if you want more assurance that I can write worth a damn before laying down your hard-earned three bucks, you can also download the short story 'The Descent' for free at the same place.

Mister Smith was thinking about nothing in particular on the flight back to Melbourne when he looked out the window and saw a man standing on the top of a cloud.

Science fiction? Not so much right now. Weird shit? Yeah, okay, I'll cop to that. Hopefully some of y'all might find this stuff to your liking.

--
Patrick O'Duffy
Not the Man From Atlantis

I've lurked for a while and figure this is a good place to start posting.

I have my own website - www.JETobal.com - with a number of my fiction pieces on it. My style is pretty much what the title of this thread says: weird.

For example, i have one short story entitled "Fuck You, Stephenie Meyer" which is a 30-page, very tongue-in-cheek tale about a man with a rare mutation of vampirism which causes him to crave semen rather than blood. And another story called "The Taxicab Messiah" about, well, a taxi driver who thinks he's the messiah.

But i'm currently working on a novel called "A Kind of Drug" that's about a bizarre form of writing discovered at an archaeological dig in Morocco. When read, the writing elicits an immediate, intense, emotional reaction and is highly addictive. Then things get nutty. I'm serializing the novel online which means that (very much like Freakangels), a few pages are posted every Friday. I only started doing this two weeks ago, so there's obviously still a lot more to come.

Oh, and everything on my site is free to all.

If you like my writting and want to receive future updates, feel free to check out my twitter or my facebook.

And i guess that's it for me.

Hello. I am Ravis. I write stuff that nominally falls into the horror genre, but often contains too much black humor, dialog and real-life weirdness to read like the stuff most people expect (and too often get) from horror. My e-novella Ghostwriter is available here via the marvelous folks at Smashwords--it's a quick and modern story about a haunted apartment, undead prostitutes, Ghostbusters and Grateful Dead jokes and the perils of having one's screenplay produced under the unfortunate name The Crevice. I live in St. Petersburg, Florida, which is beautiful but happens to be where the Tampa cops tend to send all their homeless. My wife Rebecca and I are currently slightly anxious because one of our dogs is having surgery on Wednesday. Also, I sometimes wish I was born in the U.K., if only for the whole "getting a pass on saying 'cunt' all the time" thing.

Trenches ‘n’ extraterrestrials - what’s not to love? Fast-paced action and imperialist adventure for the 21st century. If it helps, imagine Charley’s War drawn by Kevin O’Neill.

You can pick it up here, check out some of the background behind the book here, and you can find me on twitter.

The follow-up, No Man’s World: The Ironclad Prophecy is out this summer.
Thanks to Warren for the opportunity to pimp my pulp.

 Hey-o,

Late to the party, but that's never previously stopped me from shimmying up a drain and creeping in an unlatched window to expose myself to the unwary. I'm an author all sorts of things, most of them unpleasant--recent developments include my short story "The Adventures of Ernst, Who Began a Man, Became a Cyclops, and Finished a Hero" going live at the website Beneath Ceaseless Skies and my second novel The Enterprise of Death edging toward publication (March 5th in the UK, the 24th the Colonies). Here be the cover:

It's about an African slave coming to Europe in the early days of the Renaissance, whereupon she learns necromancy, tries to dodge the Inquisition, and meets the artist turned mercenary Niklaus Manuel Deutsch, a prostitute-happy gunslinging Dutchwoman, and the infamous alchemist Dr. Paracelsus, among other sundry goings-on.

I'm also the author of The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart, a novel about twin brother graverobbers sacking their way across 14th century Europe, with lots of monsters and witches and buboes and infanticide and such. It's sort of a comedy. The cover for that one, by the brilliant Istvan Orosz, seems to be popular even with readers who loathe the contents.

I make an admittedly half-assed effort to keep my website and blog up to date, and can be found in the usual skummy harbors of the intersea. Thanks for the opportunity, Warren, and well met all around--my to-read list's been nicely inflated from this thread. Cheers!

I'm glad this thread stayed open until now, 'cause I didn't want to hype this until it was live. But now it is, so here we go.

My name is Adam Rothstein, and I write perhaps realistic fiction, depending on what your standards for reality are.

I just finished a novel called Light on Fire. The story regards the retirement years of one Angel of History, forced out of his office by circumstances beyond his control. He's making the most of it though, and wouldn't mind sharing some of his experiences adapting to this new lifestyle, living the civilian life, and brushing shoulders on the streets with adults, children, eco-terrorists, police, students, drug-imbibers, bar regulars, the handicapped, the unemployed, the shiftless, the eccentric, the desiring-creative, and the other sorts of people that we might not so easily name, whose motives are not so easy to classify. But don't worry--nothing bad will happen. He's sure of it.

If you would rather that I just be a jerk and describe the work in terms that will more easily allow you to decide if you would like to read it or not, then think of something between William Burroughs and John of Patmos, an epic-poem State of the Union address, a ink-scabbed over bar conversation, with delusions of one day becoming a theoretical treatise regarding the summoning power of American-esoteric incantations, or an American-esoteric incantation meant to summon theoretical treatises. With sex, and stuff on fire.

But don't take my word for it. I'm serializing the entire damn thing on the Internet for free, because this is the world we live in.

www.lightonfire.net.

The first chapter is already up. We'll start at a pace of about 3 a week, starting next week. There will be eBooks too, in all flavors.
Also: for a limited time you can sign up to beta test the eBook, earning you a free copy in a format of your choice. See the link for the details on this marketing ploy disguised as an incredible deal.

Thanks for the space as always, Mr. Ellis.

My writing tends to delve more into the 'weird' side over sci-fi, but that is alright isn't it?

I currently have three books that I independently released and all the info can be found at my website www.banocanut.com along with sample chapters, other works I have done, and links. They are all available in print through Amazon, and in eBook format at various online sources, with the cheapest being SMASHWORDS, and the most notable being Barnes and Nobles.

Just a quick summary on my books, No Cure for Nature is a comical adventure taking place after Mother Nature launched a rebelion against the humans, Superhero's Welcome is a comical murder mystery revolving around a group of superhero's, and Adventure, Sorrow, and Humor is a collection of three novellas, with each one linked to one of the three words in the title.

Thanks,
Dan Schwartz

I posted in here a couple months ago but am re-posting again, very quickly. When i originally came in here, I had only posted about 10 or 15 pages of my novel, A Kind of Drug, on my website. Now, there's about 65 pages and two, complete chapters.

The novel centers around a bizarre form of writing discovered at an archaeological dig in Morocco. When read, the writing elicits an immediate, intense, emotional reaction and is highly addictive. Then things get nutty. So far, the two "drugs" focused on are called Rapture and Lust.

For those interested:
A Kind of Drug
Facebook

Hello! I'm afraid I don't know if I fit the "weird" requirement, although my wife might say I do.

I'm currently writing for Black Library and just signed my contract for my first novel of at least three set in their Warhammer 40K universe. I've also had short stories and essays in Mota 3:Courage edited by Karen Joy Fowler and a non-fiction essay in HOUSE, UNAUTHORIZED by BenBella Press as well as short stories in loads of places from Ideomancer to Vestal Review and more. I attended the Clarion East SF 2000 writer's workshop class when it was held at Michigan State University and am currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In addition to the Warhammer 40K work, which currently numbers one short story released, one novella that should be seeing print soon, and several shorts that will be released ahead of the novels; I'm also working on some original character work that I haven't hammered down yet.

With any luck I'll have a dedicated writing blog up sometime soon. I've been caught a little flat-footed as my writer career has suddenly sort of taken off in terms of the franchise stuff, and hopefully this will lead to my own character work finding a home.

We release a new chapter on her website every Sunday and free downloads the following Wednesday and will continue to do so at least through the second book.

She's currently released 2 books in her series "The Valley of Ten Crescents" - "Thieves at Heart" and "Self-Made Scoundrel." The third, "Red Moon Rising" will be out by summer/fall of this year. Thieves at Heart is free on Smashwords, or at her website and both can be found to buy on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.

Pieces of the stories in the first two books run parallel in time and the characters and events overlap in places until they all meet up again in the third book.

BLURB for Thieves at Heart
Tavera has spent her whole life in the Valley of Ten Crescents, the only half elf in a region populated by humans devoted to the Church of the Moon Goddess. Her ‘mam’ was a prostitute who gave her up to save her business. Currently pumping out a fantasy trilogy (because they always come in trilogies, don't they?) while editing two weird/cyberpunk novels into shape for e-book release.
