Look What I Did- they're kinda all over the place. The albums Minuteman for the Moment and My First Time lean more toward that kinda math-metal technical stuff, but are really poppy. Atlas Drugged is what they call "infopunk", but I can't come up w/ a great description what what that means. (I can share mp3s if anyone happens to like these guys; I know them, it's okay...)
Dog Fashion Disco/ Polkadot Cadaver- (they're almost the same band) circus-jazz-death-metal. P-dot is even weirder, more electronic.
Screaming Mechanical Brain- synth-driven metal w/ a "conspiracy theory" bent to their lyrics.

Most of the bands I would recommend have already been mentioned, but a couple of extras:

These Arms Are Snakes - angular rock/mathcore/post-hardcore. Brilliant albums, but a fucking amazing live show. Now defunct. I like all the albums for different reasons, so I'm not sure which to recommend, but probably Oxeneers.
Narrows - "No sass or flash, just punk the way we know how. We are Narrows...." They call themselves punk, but it sounds like post-hardcore to me. Singer from Botch, guitarist from TAAS. They've got one EP, Narrows, and an LP, New Distances, both are great.
Big Black - they feel like punk, but it's sort of a mashup between punk, metal and industrial. Atomizer and Songs About Fucking are both great.

And then I second Genghis Tron, Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Boris, Neurosis, Isis and Ministry.

ANAAL NATHRAKH (Early stuff is exceedingly raw and vicious, later stuff is still exceedingly vicious but much less raw. Recommended songs - Pandemonic Hyperblast (early), More of Fire Than Blood (late))
ASH POOL (Raw / lo-fi black metal. WARNING: Lyrical themes are apparently "sexual domination" and "dark sexuality", in case you find that offensive. Recommended song - The Sin of Nature is the Sign of God)
BONE AWL (Extremely raw and lo-fi black metal, veering towards noise in places. Not for everyone. Try the album Meaningless Leaning Mess)
DEATHSPELL OMEGA (Progressive black metal from France. More an album band, definitely listen to Paracletus, if you like that then the other two albums in the trilogy)
WINTERFYLLETH (Slightly folky black metal from the UK. Recommended song - The Fields of Reckoning)

Doom Metal / Stoner Rock
EARTH (Classic doom band, their recent output has been almost... uplifting. Which sounds weird for a doom band, but it works very well. Recommended album - Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull)
SLEEP (Yet another classic band. The songs tend towards the *ahem* lengthier end of the spectrum. Recommended songs - start with something off one of the earlier albums, but if you're feeling brave give Dopesmoker (just over 1 hour long) a spin.)
SUNN O))) (Extreme doom. Recommended albums - 00Void if you want to feel the bass slowly crush you, Black One if you want doom with exceedingly scary black metal vocals, Monoliths and Dimensions if you want something haunting and beautiful)
THORRS HAMMER (Early project from one of the guys behind Sunn O))). Seriously impressive throaty vocals from the (then) 17-year old female vocalist. Recommended song - Norge)

Grindcore

Note: no descriptions here, grindcore either gives me "the thrill" or it doesn't, and I find it hard to analyse why. Here's some which does.

AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED (Recommended song - Dead Battery)
FILTHY CHRISTIANS (Recommended song - Zombie Holocaust)
INSECT WARFARE (Recommended song - Amphetamine Psychosis)
MISTRESS (Recommended songs - Kunt, Why Don't You Just Fuck Off?)

Thrash Metal

BLOOD TSUNAMI (Superb blackened thrash. Fast and fucking vicious. Recommended song - Laid to Waste)
GAMA BOMB (Thrash with a kind of schlocky horror vibe. Fast and furious. Recommended song - Zombie Blood Nightmare)
MUNICIPAL WASTE (Dumb as shit thrash metal, great for partying. Recommended song - The Art of Partying)
SLAYER (Don't think I can say anything about Slayer that hasn't already been said. Recommended song(s) - Blood Red / Spirit in Black / Expendable Youth / basically everything off Seasons in the Abyss)

Cross-genre / Unclassifiable / Just a bit fucking weird
AKERCOCKE (Extreme metal with elements of electronic and world music. Choronzon is probably their strongest album. Recommended song - Son of the Morning)
THE BERZERKER (Superfast death metal with gabber-esque drum machines. Recommended song - No One Wins)
BONG-RA (Jungle / breakcore artist who experimented with metal sounds on the EP "Grindkrusher" and the album "Full Metal Racket". Recommended song - Bloody Cenotaph)
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN (Post-hardcore / mathcore / screamo. You can completely ignore the last two albums, but the EP featuring Mike Patton on vocals is mandatory. Recommended song - When Good Dogs Do Bad Things)
DRUMCORPS (Breakcore constructed out of samples from death metal and grindcore songs. More recent stuff sounds like he's recording the guitars himself this time. Recommended songs - Pig Destroyer Destroyer (old stuff), Headstrong and Heartfoolish (new stuff))
GNAW THEIR TONGUES (Post-black metal, perhaps?. Noisy soundscapes with agonised vocals. Again, hard to recommend an indivual song, they have some free stuff on their bandcamp)
MELT-BANANA (Punk? Fastcore? Noise Rock? Demented guitar noise and high-pitched vocals. Recommended song - Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun)
YAKUZA (Progressive metal with a saxophonist. Incorporates elements of jazz and world music. Recommended song - Farewell to the Flesh)

Without getting into a fanboy-ish discussion, I just want to politely disagree. I think their latest album is their strongest by far. Just on its own Farewell Mona Lisa is a 6 minute epic that writhes and twists through different sounds without ever sounding disjointed.

That's fair enough, each to their own and all that. Personally, they just never quite clicked for me in the same way as the earlier stuff, but I shouldn't have dismissed them so easily.

One thing I forgot to include earlier is the collaborations between Merzbow and a couple of Japanese rock bands. Starting with the heaviest (or at least, loudest) Merzbow and Gore Beyond Necropsy's "Rectal Anarchy" is extreme goregrind mixed with insane harsh noise. Think the polar opposite of ambient and you're about halfway there. Ideal for revenge on neighbours who insist on playing crappy dance music at unsociable hours. Merzbow has also collaborated on a number of occasions with Boris (who I've seen mentioned earlier in the thread). It's been a while since I listened to any of them, but I seem to remember "Sun Baked Snow Cave" being utterly mesmerising while under the influence of, shall we say, beneficial herbs.

Fugazi can be loud and angry, and is also a band for which I have the utmost unwavering respect, with regards to their business ethics. The newer stuff isn't as fast, but I still consider them a punk band. Hmm...can't figure out how to embed video though, if it doesn't show in the preview I assume I screwed it up.

I also second Sonic Youth and Lightning Bolt as far as that stuff goes.

Anyway, metal? Like you said, Mayhem is always nice. If you like that then maybe you'll like early Bathory, Darkthrone, Burzum, Sodom, and maybe even Mercyful Fate, which is getting pretty 80's there sound-wise so I'm not sure if that's the type of metal you're looking for. I could go on about Black Metal for quite a while...

Ooh, I knew I'd forgotten something. Stolen Babies are great, and their drummer filled in with Dillinger Escape Plan when the founding drummer left. He's a great drummer, but I don't think he really pushes himself with SB. Hoping he gets to bust out some craziness on the upcoming SB album.

Also - sort of punk, but also just dirty rock with a great sense of humour/weirdness - Future of the Left. Ex-Mclusky members, (who is also worth checking out) but I actually prefer Future.

It isn't new by any means, but the Slayer / Anthrax / Megadeth / Metallica dvd set from their show in Bulgaria last summer is a great value.
Dark Tranquillity's We Are the Void and Nevermore's Obsidian Conspiracy were strong as always. Warrel Dane's solo effort is also highly recommended.
Jon Oliva's Pain Festival retains the strong Savatage feel he always has
I went on a binge of all the Poisonblack albums not having realized that there was a spiritual successor to Sentenced out there. Escapextasy and Dead Heavy Day are recommended.
Jon Schafer of Iced Earth released a side project called Sons of Liberty ... just don't pay attention to the right-wing lyrics. I bought Pyramaze's Immortal based on Matt Barlow's connection (subsequently jumping back to IE) and was not disappointed.
Týr was another recent discovery (and subsequent binge). Superb viking metal. 2009's By the Light of the Northern Star is recommended. Notable side project Heljareyga
Lacuna Coil's 2009 Shallow Life was a high point.
Candelmass' Death Magic Doom wasn't quite as strong as their previous self-titled album and King of the Grey Islands.
For progressive metal, you can't really go wrong with any of Arjen Lucassen's various endeavors - Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine
Grave Digger is still releasing strong power metal albums. Their latest Clans Will Rise Again had 4-5 very strong tracks.
Avantasia released two albums last year following up on their excellent 2008 Scarecrow.

I don't have much metal and my punk is all over the punk scale, but lemme see. orright, what do I have that's loud and angry, hmm... Alexisonfire, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance... The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are occasionally angry... a couple of amazing local bands I shan't rec because your shipping for their CDs would be exorbitant and I can't even find decent youtubes of them... (seriously, it's depressing. they are so good, and yet too poor for music videos. ;_; but hey, you probably have the equivalent where you live! you should go to some random punk shows till you find some you like! on the bright side, obscure local bands tend to have cheap gigs :3)

probably the most Punk punk band I like would be The Matches, which are sadly defunct although apparently the lead singer is now in a new band which I need to check out. I definitely reccommend obtaining these dudes' back catalogue though, even if you can't go to shows anymore.

one of my favourite bands is The Mountain Goats, and their stuff is highly variable in tone and style, and not necessarily loud (although Darnielle fucking belts it out in concert, his manic grin kind of doesn't translate into recordings :P), but when they get angry, they get angry. I mean:

(fucking love that song, I wrote a whole essay about it second year of uni and according to last.fm I played it about eighty times in one week and I still didn't get sick of it)

Then there is The Receiving End Of Sirens, who, despite having a wanky name, are pretty good and definitely loud:

Man, I should've been checking here more often. Punk rock makes up the vast bulk of what I listen to. Here are a bunch of overlooked and underrated bands that I love. Most of them play music that is tightly structured but always gives the impression with its speed and intensity that the whole thing's about to fall apart at the seams.

Paintbox - Soaring unhinged burning spirits Japanese hardcore punk with melodic sensibilities. Driving rhythms, manic solos, angry shouting, somewhere between Motorhead and G.I.S.M. Or if D.R.I. did anime theme tunes.

Hickey - Sloppy angry punk rock full of weird shit. To demonstrate why Hickey are the best band ever I will relate the tale of the Voodoo Glow Skull split: Hickey played a show with the Voodoo Glow Skulls and VGS had them kicked out without pay after they made fun of Epitaph records. In return, Hickey stole one of their trumpets, and the VGS started phoning them and leaving death threats on Hickey’s answering machine which Hickey then set to the backing of atonal squawks from stolen trumpet and put that as the Voodoo Glow Skulls side of the split with a great Hickey song on the other side and they slapped an Epitaph logo on the whole thing and released it with a zine explaining the whole situation. Hickey eventually did return the trumpet, but only after filling it with pudding. All their stuff is available at mattyluv.com

Bent Outta Shape - Scratchy guitar licks and fuzzy infectious riffs, the biting immediacy and frustrated youth of The Clash s/t filtered through the irresistible rise and fall rhythm Husker Du’s hypnotic jazz-punk epic Reoccurring Dreams. It’s all feedback eroding sweetness and sweetness fighting against feedback, slurred vocals and punchy licks, urgent bursts of nervous energy and deep veins of ragged beauty.

Guitar Wolf - Japanese garage punk power trio. Equal parts Ramones, Motorhead, Link Wray and Joan Jett. Loud as it gets.

Off With Their Heads - Uplifting Oi!/pop-punk anthems about hating yourself and everything else, taking too many drugs and wanting to die.

Fancy Pants and the Cellphones - Four guys from Vermont singing low-fi songs about smoking, drinking and watching too much TV.

The Vindictives - As snotty as it gets. Brilliantly constructed pop-punk songs about alienation and modern society. This band has my favourite backing vocals of any band.

Fleshies - Off kilter punk rock band unafraid to throw in metal, rock and plain weird influences.

Bomb the Music Industry! - Ska/punk/electro collective. Miniature epics and fun stupid ditties about the struggles of modern life.

The Arrivals - Released the best punk album of last year. Mature without being boring. Solid heartfelt punk songs.

Dead Mechanical - Power and melody. Baltimore pop-punk somewhere between Jawbreaker and Dillinger Four.

The Gateway District - Female-fronted pop-punk with the odd country influence.

Apocalypse Hoboken - Snotty Chicago punk rock from the 90s.

Mischief Brew - Beautiful rousing folk-punk drawing on The Pogues, klezmer and The Germs.

The Measure [SA] - Sort of folky/indie pop-punk. Catchy and fuzzy with sweet female vocals.

Pretty Boy Thorson and the Falling Angels - Rollicking country punk. All the songs are about drinking and heartbreak.

That's probably more than enough for now. I try and post at least one punk song a day here and I don't like repeating a band within a few months. I can also send people download links for albums by any of the bands above if people want it.

coalesce's most recent album ox is a stroke of absolute goddamn genius, coming back in the best possible way, reminding us how this shit is done.

and city of caterpillar if you want some spacey, almost prog-like post hardcore. wonderful melodies and complex song structures with jagged and severe edges. they were like the best band no one ever heard of.

Brew Records (Leeds/Manchester-based) have some fucking brilliant bands signed. They actually make me uncharacteristically proud of what England has to offer.

Kong's Snake Magnet is one of the most brutal and consistently interesting albums I've ever heard. Kinda like Shellac, but more technical.

They also have Chickenhawk (now Hawk Eyes) signed.

Modern Bodies is a ridiculously good album.

@joe i'm kind of obsessed with city of caterpillar, and have listened to their album constantly since i was in high school and first heard it. i was always really bummed out, growing up on the island, that i'd never get to see any of those bands here. that whole era from 99-02 where it was just like, orchid, saetia, pg. 99, the locust, employer employee, etc etc etc. was pretty much my favorite movement in music and i never really understood why that stuff never caught on, it was such a small blip even though i'm sure there are tons of bands now that earmark that stuff as a heavy influence.

it wasn't all bad living here music wise, the locust played here in 01, and it was pretty amazing.

As far as metal goes, I highly recommend Krallice. They've released two albums so far, their self-titled debut from 2008 and Dimensional Bleedthrough in 2009. A third album is coming out some time this year.

Death is one of my boyfriend's favorites. He put that song on a mix for me a few years back and I did not stop spinning it for quite a while.

Speaking of bands that fit in this thread that are also called Death, (@ralf.haring's comment about Death in a metal thread) here's metal band Death:

The story behind this band is actually pretty tragic. The lead singer and guitarist Chuck Shuldiner is often referred to as the father of death metal (so says Wikipedia. Actual metal fans could probably back me up on this) and within the last decade he developed cancer and due to a whole host of things that went wrong with his health insurance, he ended up dying in 2001 at the age of 34.

VOID is, in my super informed and SEXY opinion, the best of the early 80s DC bands. everyone fawsn over MINOR THREAT, BAD BRAINS etc, but the VOID side of that split just smokes. they influenced all of the modern hardcore that i like...SEX/VID, VEINS, VILE GASH, NAZI DUST, WALLS, FAILURES even CEREMONY all spring from that lineage

This metal isn't new, but it's pretty underground -

I've been listening to a lot of Coroner lately. A band formed by former Celtic Frost roadies back in the late 80's, and what emerged was actually pretty fantastic. Highly technical, even proggy thrash, that succeeds better than any other band I know of at seamlessly blending highly articulate melodic phrasing and intricate song structures with a fast, aggressive thrash sound. Check them out.
