It's heartbreaking, as I spent 11 years working for that Co. I actually quit this past December so I could focus on working from home. The two stores I worked for are on the list.

But I, along with other a bunch of people knew in our hearts it was coming. I'm in Boston now, and the closest remaining Borders are shutting down. Which is fine I guess as I've not been to one in years. Harvard Books and Amazon get my money now, as there is still nothing like picking up an actual book.

Maybe the alpha Borders on Liberty Street will be able to rise from the ashes. The liquidation sales start this Saturday as they will be losing their employee discount this Friday. Friday is also the last day of the cafe. I was told it had already started with the customers acting like vultures.

The Perth branch is easily the biggest bookstore in the city (and hence by definition the biggest bookstore for a good 2,000km in all directions) and its range has always been fantastic. I hope they manage to keep afloat.

The big chains were doing badly before Amazon was even relevant. Borders and B&N built too many stores, the stores were often too big, and they bought too many smaller chains with different business models and demographics. I always kind of enjoyed that because it encouraged wandering around with a cup of coffee.
