    Stereogum premiered the new Valentines Day covers EP by Mobius Band with covers of Daft Punk, Neil Young, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Daniel Johnston and Bob Dylan. This is good. They're opening a whole UK/ European tour for Editors, so if you're going to any of those shows, please get there early.

    They also posted a new Man Man track. I love Man Man.

    This morning, I threw on the Veils' Nux Vomica. It's so dramatic and English yet great. My favorite dramatic English band since Bauhaus, I think. Or Suede. I'm sort of afraid to see them live because of how close they toe the line for me. I mean, a cheese steak works only so long as it's got more steak than cheese. Anyone care to set my mind at ease?

    Listening to a floaty bluegrassy band called Nathan. The album's Key Principles. It's turning out ok, the second half is a bit of a let down. Though Sophie's Waltz is a good song. I love Theramins.

    Other than that, some Regina Spektor and a little Quantic.

    I'm attempting to contain my disappointment at learning that The Black Keys are already fucking sold out. The show's in April! Christ!

    I just got into "This Morn' Omina", specifically their album 'Le Serpent Rouge'. I'm sure I'm late to hearing about them, but I love pretty much everything I've heard so far. Weird, dark and pulsating.

    Also, after YEARS of waiting E.S. Posthumus has another album out. And it's a... concept album.

    "In 1929, the ancient map "Piri Reis" was discovered in Constantinople. The map is extraordinary because it depicts bays and islands on the Antarctic coast which have been concealed under ice for at least 6,000 years. What civilization was capable of such exploration that long ago? On "Cartographer", we imagine that these explorers were from the tiny island of Numa in the Southern Indian Ocean. As advanced seafarers, they navigated every corner of the Earth. We have created a language unique to them and tell stories through song that describe their creation, discoveries and ultimate demise."

    Sure, but they went on sale like weeks ago.


    And places like Zulu and Red Cat only got about twenty tickets a piece. Which means that there is a big enough fanbase for them here in Vancouver that almost all of the tickets were sold through Ticketmaster. That blows my mind. I mean it's not like they're Tom Waits or anything. When did they get so huge? Where are all of the rockabilly/blues fans hiding? Is there a secret club that I'm not part of? If so, LEMME IN GODDAMNIT! I needs me some blues!

    Loving Kemialliset Ystavat....mindblowingly , chasteningly glorious. Finnish pyschfolkburble is the way foward.

    MIA's Kala is also getting some airtime...catchy and messy as hell. What pop should be like.

    Now listening to the amazing 60's lost garage classic " Black Monk Time" in tribute to the recently deceased Monks guitarist/banjo player Dave Day ...his wired sleazy riffing throughout the album is one of the best sounds in the world....

    @ Ben, you've got to check out Dorando, the Bay Area counterpart to Al Green. Also, Al Green's Belle Album is mostly hitless, but it's such a monstrously great record, written after the death of his girlfriend and leading into him becoming a reverend. Like Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear in how heartbreaking it is (Marvin gets a divorce from his wife aka Berry Gordy's sister and is forced to give her the proceeds of his next album, so he writes the whole thing about their relationship all the way through the acrimonious divorce. It's pulled off the shelves not to long after release and goes out of print for decades. No hits, but gorgeous.

    @ Kernowdrunk, thanks for the rec. for Kemialliset Ystavat. That plus Warren's inclusion of Fricara Picchu on Whitechapel Radio led me to drop 57 Euros on the Fonal Records site last night. And the US$ is seriously weak! Also, heck yeah on Black Monk Time. I met Eddie Shaw at Terrastock II and he was incredibly nice and humble about, oh, discovering feedback.

    Worked all last night and much of today on a new sampler for radio and for SXSW, coming up next month in Austin. Here's a link to the jukebox of it:

    I might change a couple of things, but I'm happy to share. All of the bands are on Absolutely Kosher, Misra or Hometapes (a label we distribute) and quite a few of the tracks are from records that haven't been released yet and, in a couple of cases, signings that haven't even been announced.
