It's Friday, and we're back with more FREAKANGELS.

'Morning, Whitechapel. I am currently on week I-don't-even-fucking-know-anymore of the ohmygod-seriously-I-may-be-dying plague, oh and also I'm to pack up house and working at the same time. I'm pretty much either inhumanly awesome or completely insane. Warren would probably say a little of Column A, a little of Column B. Warren's never really wrong.

How's everyone else hanging in there?

Now that was a sweet little episode - some more background detail, a (seeming) resolution of the Sirkka/Jack situation, a new insult, and a sting at the end from Luke. Nice work!

I was hanging in and enjoying a day off work until I got a call saying that there was some work due today for a major client that I actually hadn't done. I think my co-workers have taken care of it, but there'll be hell to pay on Monday. Oh the joys of the working life - makes me wish the apocalypse would come and the worst I'd have to worry about would be Mudlarks.

Six out of seven of the adults that are part of my extended household got the plague, so, yes, insane, but it drags on for so goddamned long, it's get back to work or get on the waggon when the rag man comes around calling for corpses. Good luck, Ariana, and thanks.

Man. What ARE they gonna fuck up once they start cooking each other's heads? I'd ask Sirkka to fix half a dozen things about me if I had half a chance, but I can only hope she or Arkady or someone pioneers some way to keep the subject's hand on the throttle. Just a bit. Nobody, given a gift like theirs, would fail to fall victim to Mother Knows Best. Even caring deeply about all of the people she tinkers with, after a while, everyone would be philosophically alike.

I think Sirkka's expression in the last panel is just about perfect. It's actually kind of a big question Luke is asking, and they've all argued over it before to various degrees.

As for me, I've spent the week agonizing over applying to school for architecture. It's the most recent in a long line of wacky ideas, but it's the one I've been most rabid about throughout my life. It's one of those things that's been staring me in the face and I haven't even been paying attention to it. And I'd probably enjoy it quite a bit. (Quite a bit more than photography and writing, anyway. It's not that I don't like doing them, it's that I can guarantee making a living out of them would drive me insane.)

The only problem is the fact that the only accredited architecture school in the state is an hour and a half a way, there's no easy transportation to get there, and I sort of like hanging out with my wife and kids. Also it's expensive and six years of school plus three years of professional work before licensing. But goddamn it, I'm turning 30 this year. It's about fucking time to grow up.

 Brilliant. Happy.

The Arkady in my life would definitely say 'Wazzock' and once she is feeling better, I will broach the topic. She must say this. Yes.

Also, I like the steps to grown-up-hood-ness. Making big grown-up-like decisions is much easier when you've practiced making less global in nature ones.

My week has been odd, but good. I have new love for Valentine's Day and new love for the world and less love for people who need to control communities by defining what love is and how it ought to be expressed, and really, I'm okay with the less love part - compassion is not to be wasted on most of the twats.

And, my boss finally brought in the book-repair manual, so we'll sit down and he'll order me a basic set of tools and I will learn to do some of this while I am nervously waiting to hear from grad school and deciding how to plan my move.

Thanks to all for a brilliant episode.

Smile time in this week's installment. Arkady and Jack... I loved Connor's TMI reaction. Also, "wazzock." Hey, if this is a made up word, it's certainly more inventive than one created by a certain unnamed vice-presidential candidate/narcissist.

Weekwise, it's been the pits. If it was me in Connor's shoes I'd probably leap to the conclusion Arkady has x-ray vision rather than she boned Jack. But it might just be because we know she does.

Anyway this has been six pages of pure undiluted sweetness. I blame Arkady mostly. It's like she becomes exponentially more cute and brilliant with every other word she says. I'd be embarrassed to enjoy the shenanigans of such a blatant author favorite if it wasn't so well done.

In conclusion I'm both amused and moved. And pleased that the phrase "grow the fuck up" made it into the comic at last. (Of course Arkady said it.)

Heh*sniffle* I may be the only one but the first 3-4 pages were actually making me a bit sad faced, though I was wondering where Kady was going with her revelations. She's been too together to toss off such hurtful information without a goal, and hurting people as an objective seems to be beyond her. But it was just ...icky to watch it. Necessary, but glad I wasn't in that room, if that makes sense. Anyway, then the scene tilted around and became something good, refreshing. And... aww. Warren, I always knew you were a hopeless fucking romantic. }:P

A story about freaks growing the fuck up. from the very beginning I said I loved this and for the 091279735th time I'll repeat myself: Damn this is some good shit. I love it.
------------

chugging through the week, scared as shit about lack of money in the face of advancing needs on every level. Redirecting one's career isn't cheap and few people can do that an maintain an income. I definitely haven't and it's continuously slapping me around. There is pretty much no way for me to earn money right now - I hung up the idea of job hunting for copy writing gigs while studying Japanese & voice acting. My only immediate option is selling stuff.

Anyway, busy weekend ahead. Voice workshops and time at the theatre and pretending I'm not stomping on thin ice.

This was not my favorite installment of Freakangels. The reason being is that I do not feel that just because two characters who obviously love each other but for whatever reason are not together is necessarily childish. There might be a legitimate reason why characters cannot be together like rather conflicting personalities like we see in Freakangels. Two people may love each other but can be completely miserable with each other. Another is that I don't that someone else just telling the couple to grow up and get over their legitimate issues is enough to make these people get over their problems.

@Colby: Well, it's not like they even have a choice. None of the Angels do: They can't ever get away from each other. They're inevitably going to become a collective of beings of pure energy who most likely have to share the entirety of time and space with each other. They are going to have to learn to get along at any cost. And they're beginning to understand this. (Arkady probably more than the others, yet.) The only thing they have any control over is when they're going to start trying to be happy together. I think Jack and Sirkka wisely have decided on sooner rather than later.

And to address your point, that's entirely their decision. Arkady doesn't tell them when they have to do it, just that they have to.

That's my interpretation anyway.

I feel like this whole thing started because of my comment. Funny thing is, Jack and Sirkka were the least of what I was talking about. The main thing that has resonated with me for the past 20-40 hours was on the first page.

"'Oh shit you did something bad so you can't be in our gang anymore.' I'm not saying it was a bad rule. I'm saying it's a kid's rule."

Honeslty, I felt like everything with Sirkka and Jack was an unplanned side note to what Arkady was really talking about, which is changing the rules. And then there's the ongoing question this comic has created in my head. "Can the irredeemable bastard be redeemed?"

The first and last page are what I was talking about, mostly, and they are the reasons I loved this issue so much.

Thank you, Warren, Paul and everyone else.

And then there's the ongoing question this comic has created in my head. "Can the irredeemable bastard be redeemed?"

Right, me too. That's the big one - I mean, surely you can't forcibly redeem someone with the push. You can't just go in and adjust him so he feels appropriately remorseful and empathetic and penitent. You can't kill him. He's been "operated on" to modify his personality but that is not the same as growing up and taking responsibility. He has a lot of shit following him around, a lot of sins to atone for and no obvious capacity for dealing with any of it. I guess maybe I'd rephrase the question slightly, "Does Luke have a path to redemption that doesn't also end with self-destruction?"

I felt a little uneasy with such a straight up treacly moment this week. I can't help thinking that something utterly gut-churningly horrifying must be just around the corner...

I'm also not totally convinced that ordering people to grow the fuck up is necessarily the surest indicator of newfound maturity either, but then, what I know about grown-up behaviour could fit inside a small plastic ankylosaurus.

I'm not sure about Luke's redemption either. Right now, he has expressed some stunted form of remorse and he has been made vulnerable by his upgrade. I think he needs help and can't just be written off. However, wiping his memory will not do that. Surely, in order to be redeemed, you need to know what you have done wrong? Surely Luke needs to feel guilt? The redemption would lie in trying to overcome that guilt and use it to inform future actions. Then again, Luke seems so spacey half the time that I'm not sure he is able to make that step.

It's an interesting question really: Does Luke have the right to not know what an asshole he used to be just cause he wants to be better? Everybody keeps hammering on about Luke. But there's a lot more going on and Arkady is referring to that "lot more". Luke already mentioned it, but everybody seems to have read just over it without noticing... The FA's have to decide what they want to do with their future. As a group of which the members are more or less convicted to cooperate. That includes Arkady, Jack, Luke... the whole bunch. Including Mark, remember him?
OK, Luke has been a bastard in the past, but he's just part of the gang. And the gang begins to realize their capabilities and, as a consequense of those, their responsibilities. They must "the fuck grow up" and start working on their conduct as a group to ensure the future will work out in a somewhat good perspective. They brought change to the world, and they have to work out how to deal with that change, and also with the other people if they find out who caused that major change and may turn against their current protectors and call them to respond on what they have caused.
The FA's have a load on heir hands and they just begin to realize it's a whole lot bigger than they ever imagined...

so, what i don't really get.

Luke more or less knew it was wrong when he did it, I mean its pretty much cry for attention territory since the first time I saw luke.

But for some reason its a lot better for Luke to relieve the rape victims memories then to keep his own memories. Even if he keeps these memories (or at least the experiance of experiancing their memories) which is not clear, I'm not sure how this is better then just letting him keep his original memories (in which he knows he did wrong) as apposed to a bunch of dissociated memories (in which he learns rape is bad mmmkay ie something he already knew).

Short story is that Luke acted out and did bad things because quite frankly, he was treated badly for a long period of time. But lukes current actual and social castration (being 'fixed' multible times and in most senses of the word) is just cementing how low tier luke is and more or less locking him in for more abuse in the future. I really don't see how this is going to fix things and in fact will probably make more problems down the road. I feel bad for Luke, the mans a rapist but most people have a judge to keep the mob from getting too vicious or inventive, which looks like something that the Freakangels don't have the benefit of.

I wonder how long before the freak angels learn that the world for all its fucked-up-ness before hand, actually had a pretty good grasp on a lot of things. I think making Luke work, perhaps with other people/angels, even on those rapes that are already happening would have done about the same amount of education and prevention and would have actually involved and starting working on luke rather then arbitrary punishments.
