I hope any NZ Whitechappelians are safe and out of danger. Sounds like an awful mess.

Heavily bogged down right now. Hopefully meaning it's overloaded with folks trying to donate. Another possibility:

BoingBoing has links to a Google person-locator app, and other useful stuff:

Reading the accounts of the NZ quake made me think "What would I do?" and reminded me of an article I read in Whole Earth Review many years back:

    Learning from the Earthquake
    by Stewart Brand

This is Stewart Brand's observations of the 1989 San Francisco 'quake. He was driving through the hard-hit Marina district when it struck, and joined fellow citizens and professionals trying to help out the trapped and injured. Lots of great Lessons Learned stuff about preparedness and civilian response.

    That's the saddest story ever.

But thank you for the mental prep./homework.

It reminded me a little of when all the power went out in 2003, an hour before rush-hour: taking the bus-ride home (what else: a creature of habit) it surprised me to see a civilian in the middle of every intersection, directing traffic in lieu of the traffic lights.

What are the odds, eh, that the editor of the Whole Earth Catalogs should find himself there, and write about it. I should look to see what else he's written.

People in general are a hell of a lot better and more competent than we give them credit for. I'm betting we hear a lot of amazing stories out of Christchurch.

The issue of WER that that article appeared in was the first one I bought. I was on a business trip and bored out of my skull. I was totally blown away by the depth of the articles, and by that article in particular.

The majestic Christchurch Cathedral is probably damaged beyond repair.
