Reading the accounts of the NZ quake made me think "What would I do?" and reminded me of an article I read in Whole Earth Review many years back:

It reminded me a little of when all the power went out in 2003, an hour before rush-hour: taking the bus-ride home (what else: a creature of habit) it surprised me to see a civilian in the middle of every intersection, directing traffic in lieu of the traffic lights.

What are the odds, eh, that the editor of the Whole Earth Catalogs should find himself there, and write about it. The issue of WER that that article appeared in was the first one I bought. I was on a business trip and bored out of my skull.
