This is a work in progress which is far too large to post as an image - I'm having a bastard of a time re-sizing it for some reason.

@ lazzyfair; Your landscape work is really marvelous. I second Tyson, there needs to be some IG-88.

@ Meatgun; I really love the character work on the alien. Fantastic concepting.

@ Alan Tyson; Their expressions really ground the piece for me.

A piece that I've been tinkering with for awhile.

The concept/marketing of She-Ra always interested me. Better yet, if it had been successful, would that have created more assertive women/generation?

I grew up watching Thundercats. This is the new Panthro and Cheetara. I'm very interested in how they're borrowing looks of different shows in this reboot.

My partner and I have watched every season of Big Love. It's all winding down to its finale.

Yay March thread. My birthday is this month so I will try to be less lurky and more active in commenting on all the wonderful pieces that are posted here. This is one of those threads that keep my weeks full of creativity.

Ha! Thanks guys! I didn't have room for our favorite assassin droid! I based this scen off of the the mexican standoff at the end of The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and well, there wasn't any room for "The Metallic". Its funny though, I showed this to someone tonight and their first reaction was "Where's IG-88?" as well. Thinkin' he might have to show up in round 2. I'm doing a few one page stories with STAR WARS characters as a warm up to a short graphic novel I'm going to start working on soon, so I guess I just figured out at least one character that has to be in the next one!

I'm thinkin' March is going to be a good month. You guys really kicked it off with a bang. Can't wait to see what else you all have up your collective sleeves!

This one only half-counts. I was lightboxing this picture for a comic strip that I eventually realized wasn't worth doing, but I really liked this panel with the photo behind it at 1/3 opacity. Obviously it's a great photograph, but I inadvertently re-learned a lesson about breaking contour lines to achieve lighting effects while I was doing this. At that level the only values that showed through were more solidly delineated. All those colors underneath? That's the actual photo turning into what looks like some mid-90s coloring quality.

I dunno. I can't claim any authorship of it, but it was a neat surprise while I was just messing around. And it taught me a little bit more in my own drawing progress. Plus for once I had some decent linework where it was, not just where it wasn't.

EDIT TO ADD: in the strip the underlying picture was deleted so all you were left with was some B&W lineart.

yeah, gimp is a free alternative to photoshop but I either have to write or add script to the program in order to get the batch conversion function to work. I don't even know what "script" is? It seems cool though users can Script there own gimp functions and share them with the world ( or at least with the world that understands all that stuff)

I honestly have had a hell of a time finding good manga ref on Big G. Found a few images like the one below (which I used to get G's general head shape) Oddly enough, when IDW announced that they got the license for Godzilla a few months ago, I researched his various incarnations in American comics and found very quickly that western cartoonists have a tendency to want to draw their version of him, meaning more dinosaur/lizard like. For me though, I'm all about keeping it true. Giving him the dog/gorilla/noh mask face with his thick legs and upright posture. I mean that is Godzilla, no matter how you cut it.

4-5hrs. Lines in ArtRage over initial pencil roughs. Colors, highlights, and shadow in ArtRage. Background brushes, texturing, and touch-ups in Photoshop. No filters used.

Here's some shots from my gallery show opening last night in Kalamazoo. I apparently blew all this gallery's previous attendance records out the door with nearly 500 people through the gallery in 4 hours! It was a blast, and we all enjoyed art from the warming glow of all the huge widescreen monitors.

All 6 monitors, each loaded with a 10 piece slideshow, each in a different genre (design, illustration, Remake/Remodel), so I was able to display 66 pieces of artwork in one gallery. Strangely enough, the REMAKE/REMODEL and DRAW EACH OTHER monitors drew a ton of comments, as did the one devoted to my work with Thomas Dolby.

Excess ink and white acrylic paint was brushed onto a blank page to get the drybrush textures. For the smoke effect I used a skanky old brush with a little white acrylic paint and stabbed the bristles onto the inked page.

Well, we just wrapped up our inaugural week's theme of Transmetropolitan on the Comic Art Club.

This week's theme has been chosen by Carolyn Concrete who I met for the first time over the weekend. She wasn't able to participate on our first theme due to not having access to a scanner. Anyways, she chose The Sprawl Trilogy for this weeks theme. Unfortunately not many of us over at the Comic Art Club have read any of it but with the help of the interweb we will try our best.

Shay (my colorist) spotting color for the Godzilla story I've been working on. We used this as our guide to what was going on in the panel, and make sure that Shay properly delineated the difference between Godzilla and Hedorah. Had to make some tweaks to G's right hand and some of Hedorah's tentacles.

@Lazzyfair As a massive fan of Godzilla, nicely done!

Trying to get over silly block I've given myself. I've found myself actually unable to do "art" even when I've really been itching to. Quite what set of odd mental rules I've given myself, I'm not sure, but I've been actively avoiding, even to the point of making excuses, doing drawings. This was done with Alchemy. It's the second thing I've done since I got my Intuos, about 5 months ago, which is ridiculous. Literally a 1 minute doodle.

@VertigoJones Totally feeling your pain. And I have a Cintiq, damnit. I keep hearing from bearded wise men to "work through it". Personally, I find a thin brush, bottle of black ink and a stack of cheapie watercolour paper helps.

@mojokingbee Its this paper they especially made for graffiti markers and spray-paint apparently! My friend got it for me in tandem with the markers, which I got to use on my cardboard pieces (cause cardboard just wastes normal markers within a few pieces), but also works wonderfully on this paper. its very slippery and tough, it likes markers of all kinds quite well, from my leftover kid's marker packs to sharpies. see it here on dickblick : http://goo.gl/WdXSu

Haven't tried embedding vimeo files on here before, so bare with me if this doesn't work...
Here's a 200 drawing animation, which I was given a week to complete. If you were wondering why I'd gone quiet/disappeared, this is one of the reasons.

Bot-A-Day 7, roughly 4 hrs. Lines, colors, textures, highlights, and shadow in ArtRage. Touch-ups and only one minor layer of filtering in Photoshop.

I'm struggling between the part of me that wants clean lines, and the part of me that wants to be a bit more fast and loose, of late. Hopefully I can grind more of the latter soon.

This weekend, I helped print a whole mess of 5'+ long white spandex. It was my first time working with a screen so damn big. The fabric will eventually go live in the hands of one of the greatest costumers here in NYC. I can't wait to see what becomes of my babies.

We had to drape them from every available surface - this is our drying rack, which they couldn't fit on regularly.

I decided last month that for Comic Relief/Red Nose Day I'd ask people to donate a minimum of a fiver and then I'd draw them whatever they wanted (as long as it was legal). it's proven to be a really good thing actually since not only have I raised nearly £400 for a very deserving cause but it's forced me to draw subjects that I might not normally have approached. Nothing vastly unusual, but if nothing else it's shown me that my particular style is pretty versatile when it comes to different subjects. These aren't all the ones that i've done, but if you want to see the rest they're on my DA page.

@Miranda - I always enjoy getting lost in the lines of your work, and the Astro Boy piece is certainly no exception.

@ Mojokingbee - not too big $800 and it took 10 hours, the customer gets the original but at least I still own the rights to the image.
@ Sketchbrooke - I draw the whole thing quickly with brushes and then scratch the details in with a quil pen,

@mojokingbee Thanking you kindly. :) I did a web search on how she'd been portrayed in the past and it was all rather... well, simple and pretty and a bit dull really, so I went all costume designer on her. It also gave me an excuse to use elements of art nouveau and the pre-Raphelites that have influenced me. More 'designer-y' that I might normally do, but fun for that.

@Miranda - Thanks! It's actually just for a daily(ish) personal exercise. While other things may come out of it, and I may do other things as part of it, it's mainly something to try and increase daily productivity as well as broaden my skillset. I've only posted 3 thus far, but there are about 7 in various stages of completion that I'll get to finishing and posting eventually. Here's the initial bits of one I started last night, somewhere between 30-45 minutes into it (it's an instagram image via my phone, so colors and proportion are slightly skewed, & image is low quality):

@mojokingbee - Yeah, I'm slowly getting a bit more comfortable with that. Making them I've got down, but getting in the right mindset for utilizing them full-on is taking me some getting used to. Thank you for the compliment. :)

I was in the mood for some "just for fun" drawing today, and thought I might try a different take on this week's Remake/Remodel characters. My pic on the Remake/Remodel thread was very quickly done and in a cartoony mode--I wondered what I might do with roughly the same character designs but in a more realistic comic style. Partly because I wanted to know if I could still draw in a more realistic style after months of more cartoony work.

The Fantastic Man-Scrotum is omitted here, because...he's a giant scrotum.

Turns out (and this is probably not a new discovery...) occasionally switching between cartoony/realistic comic work is beneficial to both.

And I definitely agree with folks in general- that R/R thread's generated some things that deserve an infamous life of their own, scrabbling away in people's hindbrains.

Here is a commission I finished today- a team portrait of a City of Heroes guild.
Cool characters, fun to draw- though It was so weird (and challenging) to work digitally using Manga Studio again, after three months of steady brush and ink.

Not had much chance to add much lately, so here's my progress for the Misty challenge, hopefully it'll finish better than the rubbish I've posted so far.

I confess I'm using the challenges to try to raise the state of my character drawing from tragic to mildly embarassing. Its a real education seeing how others approach the challenges, and I'm really grateful to all contributors for sharing their work.

Been working on a new project called The Ballad of Mother Scorpion, and this is the first 3 pages which introduces us to our Narrator, a Saguaro cactus named Gary. Fairly static, but sets the scene and tone, I think.

It's funny; I've seen so many Japan Relief posters with destroyed red suns, cracked red suns, bleeding red suns... and they all looked hopeless and terrible.
But Fred, you cracked the code and made a relief image with... gasp...hope and optimism. Bravo man, well done!

This place is awesome and the work is amazing, everyone. I've never been in this thread before! (Didn't know it existed until today, yes, I am that much of a noob) I missed the deadline on Sunday, for the Fantastic Four Remake / Remodel, so here it is, my lost R-R. It's based in a world where there be space pirates. The four have the powers of the seasons!

I missed the FF R/R, but it was nice to see so many gorgeous and clever entries.
I celebrated today's relaunch of the FF by doing this blank variant sketch cover at my LCS today.
It was fun, I always find the Surfer to be a tricky one to draw-

@Rooth - Thanks a lot man. I squeezed in a little extra finish, after the deadline whizzed by - still working on getting my speed up. I was sorry not to get it into the thread though. Everyone's work was super good with so many variants and subtle differences in the remodeling. Loads of imagination.

Great work on that surfer pic. It's got a golden age quality to it that I really love. Way to handle all them reflections!

Here's a rejected sketch idea I did for this week's MISTY remake with the Girl and her Ghost Dog story "Whistle and I'll Come"
I was happy with the girl, but I kept screwing up the dog, mostly because I was putting him in non-defensive dog positions to get his head closer to hers.
Also, I suck at drawing animals, except for octopuses.

PS: Rooth; you're stuff just blows me on my ass!

Love that rejected MISTY sketch Paul- great character details, and I'd argue that it's fine dog you've drawn there! (Animals are tough though, horses being my arch nemesis)
Man, I can only imagine the pure gold that finds itself in the 'rejected' pile at your studio, considering all of the awesome work you hit us with here at WC!

Our own @oldhat suggested last week that I should give Darkseid a try.
How could I say NO to such a challenge (or to such a lovely gal as Oldhat)?

@imaginarypeople: I'm reading The City & The City right now. That bookmark is quite fun! I like that you've got Beszel in one color and Ul Qoma in another (which is which, of course, being entirely up in the air, as it should be) since that's one of the most vivid differences in the cities.

This is a drawing from a while back that I coloured last night. There's plenty I don't like about it (such as it being boring as hell) but I thought the colours turned out well, even with a very simple treatment (there's only actually about 10 colours in the image, no blending or gradients at all).

Edit: I'd managed to flip him left-right in the colouring process. Flipped him back.

I built a forest clearing/campsite into the back of a moving truck with my art collective, The Blood Dumpster in about 4 hours. We let people hang out, eat marshmellows and tell scary stories all while in 25F degree weather. I took a couple of bad photos of it and stuck it into my Flickr account. It's really hard to take photos with a point and shoot in the near pitch dark, and to even remember to document such things when you're having so much fun.

The walls were made by taping cardboard boxes down (insulation), then stapling black fabric over that, then stapling homemade hunting blinds to that, then weaving the branches through the hunting blind, tying it down with twine in other places and yet still more stapling in other places (seriously, my favourite item in the world is a good staple gun). To hide the bottom where the branches hit the ground, we found a huge bundle of dried out vines/sticks and stapled those in for good measure. The ground were these woven wicker mats that we dumped leaves and twigs all over for that authentic woodsy crunch. We obtained logs, an old cot mattress and sleeping bags for people to sit on. We taped battery powered LED xmas lights to the ceiling, then covered them with a blue crocheted fabric and filled the fabric with all our plastic bags/contractor bags/the batting inside an old blanket to diffuse the light. We had a tap light that was painted to look like the moon shoved into a corner. The campfire itself featured several small flashlights with colored gels taped on and one central battery powered lantern with varying colored gels striped over it and some jagged cut gels to look like "fire". We then piled rocks and sticks all over it so it covered the flashlights and all you could see were the beams of colored light coming out.

We played in there from 9p-1a, then closed up the truck and drove off. We tore down the walls, dumped anything we weren't planning on keeping in our homes and had the truck looking like a regular old moving truck inside of 1 hour. It was returned with the rental company none the wiser.

Wasn't quite feeling the digital urge so switched it up and revisit t-shirt making. I haven't done it in a while despite having a few blank shirts laying around but with Supanova convention tomorrow, I had an excuse to make a new shirt or four. I tried a different approach this time around and went freehand with a brush instead of using stencils. Gah, I wish I had more control and precision with a brush...Live and learn and tomorrow I hope to not spend too much money.
