for the last year or so I've been using Mixcloud in conjunction with my zine to showcase some of the featured music.
it's a great tool and worth checking out if you've ever had a hankering to be a dj. an hour long mix takes about 7 mins to upload from my pc.
Recently I have also started to use it to create a fortnightly mix featuring the slightly less 'out there' music that i dig but that wouldn't normally get to feature.
I know i'm not the only visitor here who uses mixcloud so i thought it'd be nice to have somewhere where we can announce new mixes.
A bit of ambient, a bit of d&b, some abstract things, a short bout of noise, and then more bass.
ETA: I hope that 5 minutes or so of noise (courtesy of Elliott Sharp, Rachel's, Matmos, Kryptogen Rundfunk and Pan Sonic) in the latter half isn't too hard to bear. I promise it gets more soothing (in a way) after that. Many many echoes of London here, too.
This will also be a weekly thing from now on, and in the future the mixes will be 45 minutes long, because that is one half of a 90 minute cassette. I still consider that A Unit Of Music.
the first half goes all gothic and 80's with a lot of obscure post-punk noodlings. Even has The Cure in it. the second half becomes a lot more modern with some avant electro. Oh and there's an advert espousing the dangers of riding on elevators - because i felt that the information needed to be put out there...
i haven't as yet - i'm running on catch-up with the big pile of things to listen to until the easter break at which point i'm hopefully going to get up to date with the cds and delve deeper into Mixcloud - things like Phantom Circuit and Cafe Kaput.
Thanks for the compliments, Ian. Been enjoying the hell out of your mixes, too.
(New set going up tomorrow. Loud guitars, very little creative mixing. I'll probably do these more layered mixes and simpler mixtape-type deals on alternating weeks.)
