I learned just a little more than a year ago that I can enjoy hiphop when I finally watched Samurai Champloo and found I really dug the soundtrack. The principle DJ was the late, great Nujabes and I was hooked from the opening track.
Nujabes + Force of Nature + Fat Jon
That led to starting Nujabes Radio at Pandora. Through the "music genome matching" or whatever I found I'm apparently attracted more to East Coast beats and funk tunes. Funny, though all of my Pandora stations inevitably lead to Portisehead. Which should have tipped me off to the fact that I might like some hiphop way back in 1994. But anyway. Pandora opened her magical box yet again for me and brought me to the likes of:
DJ Krush
Madvillain = MF DOOM + Madlib
A Tribe Called Quest
DJ Shadow
De La Soul (which yeah, I should have figured out I'd love a zillion years ago...maybe I wasn't ready)
People Under the Stairs
And it is a damn shame it took this long to find Digable Planets. Took a while, but I got there.
Found I'm a bit *shrug* on Wu Tang but like GZA, RZA and Ghostface Killah quite a bit. Along with Portisehead I was quickly reminded I like most triphop acts such as Tricky, Sneaker Pimps and Massive Attack. Other acts I found that I'm happy to share: RJD2, Dilated Peoples, Deadmau5...
Pressed for time but I'm definitely coming back to check out the other offerings here. Also I need to get to some rap in espaƱol.
ETA Oh BALLs. I don't have time to futz with the code some more to figure out what I'm doing wrong while trying to embed. The youtube embed code doesn't seem to do a darned thing... arg. Gotta go, I'll play with this some more tonight.
Edit AAAHHH I get it now. Haven't done this in a while...
but I could post a dozen more classic dope tunes from his back catalogue. It's well worth finding a copy of donuts, an instrumental beat tape that he put out on Stonesthrow, mere days before his death.
+1 Blackstar/Kweli/Mos Def - Tribe Called Quest - Sage Francis - Aesop Rock! Thanks for the POS/Doomtree tip, I've missed this somehow and seriously loving it, especially thanks to the history lesson a la Sonny.
It's summertime folks, time for a Blackalicious mix cd. Here is my line-up.
