No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.
NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.
HOWEVER: I will allow the use of or interpolation of ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS into the work.
No more than ONE submission by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.
So here's the deal:
You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called MISTY.
MISTY was a British comic for girls.
It included stories such as (and I'm making none of this up, the 70s and 80s in Britain were nightmarish):
Moonchild - Rosemary Black possesses the power of telekinesis, like her grandmother before her, as shown by a crescent moon on her forehead. Her harsh mother is jealous of the power and forbids Rosemary to use it - but temptation is getting stronger against the bully who picks on Rosemary...
School of the Lost - a boarding school that demands a special tribute for the ongoing success of parents who send their daughters to it.
Whistle and I'll Come - a ghost dog companion.
The Four Faces of Eve - Eve Marshall is trying to unravel her true identity, but she seems to be the bits and pieces of four dead women.
The Cult of the Cat - Nicola Scott is destined to become a member of a cult who worship the Egyptian cat goddess Bast.
The Sentinels - Two empty tower blocks connect our world with a parallel world where Hitler conquered Britain in 1940.
Screaming Point! - the public hangman is also a resurrectionist who believes he can bring the dead back to life.
Winner Loses All - Sandy sells her soul to the Devil to save her alcoholic father.
You are told that the cover should feature at least one of these. But I don't think anyone's paying much attention to you, everyone in the office seems to be drinking heavily and crying quite a lot.
It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What style you choose. What you make of the above. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.
Really? I'm sure my sister had some old copies of Misty, or the annuals maybe, and I don;t remember them being half as bizarre as that. I'm almost inclined to track some down and read them. There's no way the stories will live up to expectations though, is there?
Right, plenty to work on there. Having missed the Fantastic Four thread by a matter of hours I'll not miss this one. Probably. Maybe.
Bring back the 70s, though, hopefully not! It sounds like the kind of comic that a modern feminist youngster would just eat up. Lets get down to some brainstorming :)
Oh man Bevis, I hear ya. I just finished my Fantastic Four and logged on to see the thread already closed (Having been open an hour earlier). I was furious and I couldn't understand it until I saw this. It's not looking like a good week. :P Better just get it done I guess.
Couldn't resist. I remember seeing issues of Misty in school jumble sales--I think we might have had a few around the house for my sister. If I'd known they had stories about crazed telekinetic girls I might have dared read them.
I have a stack of Misty annuals. Yes, they are that weird and awesome. I have loads to say about Misty and I think there's a case to be made for it playing a large part in the 20th century revival of paganism, but I'll can that rant for now, as this is a chinese whispers thread. Just as a point of interest though, a lot of it was written by Pat Mills and John Wagner, of whom I'm sure you'll have heard.
@all--thanks for the comments! It is just about the most basic take possible on this remake...I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
Here's my first crack at one of these, the last competition came out brilliantly. 'The Sentinels - Two empty tower blocks connect our world with a parallel world where Hitler conquered Britain in 1940.' My eyes hurt now.
