Diana Wynne Jones was a great writer, an inspiration to a generation of fantasy writers, including the likes of Neil Gaiman - and my friend for nearly 20 years.

She died last night in her sleep after a 2 year fight against cancer.

Not much to add here. Only that I came to her books late and have only read the three Howl's Moving Castle books. Also I'm still annoyed that my mum didn't force me to read them when I was a lot younger.

Yeah, I can remember having some books of hers out from the library over the years, and never really reading them (too into generic fantasy of the sword and sorcery variety at the time) so of course when I started 'hearing' about her again as it were, I never really understood what was so great but always had these vague ideas of what was so good. I suppose I now have something to read though especially as they are some fun memories, which is always nice, but this is just like starting to enjoy Discworld and then finding out about Terry Pratchett's Alzheimer's; rather dispiriting really.

So sad. I'll remember her with great fondness.

I'm very sorry to hear that. My sympathies to family, friends and fans.
