I've done a bit of recapturing youth in the past few weeks. Had a birthday, grew a little older.

I'm looking forward to the rain but I'm more excited at what art you uber talented artists will bring this month!

@ 256; My strike was planned days in advance and the team behind it all wore Zardoz costumes. I remain a constant fan of your work and I've been amazed since your remake entry awhile back with the card-key design. Watching your stylized cubism pieces simply are a highlight of my usual lurking here at the 'chapel. As for the Bros piece, you just don't see much fandom for Girl Hitler and the diplomacy bit is one of my favorites too.

@Alan - splattery washes and ink lines drawn with nibs and dipped ink are where my head is these days. The surprises that happen are something I can't achieve digitally, love digital though I do.

So, my tablet became somewhat unusable recently (long story short, the nib on the pen is so worn out I can't draw anymore without twisting my arm so that I hold the pen perfectly vertically and that causes me a lot of wrist pain which is pretty bad) and I'm too broke to even afford replacement nibs (since volito2 did not come with any spares but apparently I can stuff in the basic ones from graphire/intuos without any problem, I just have to buy them first) and that kinda blocked me artistically for the larger part of the month.

Well, I have finally unstuck myself a little and did some pencil things and here's a couple of them:

great process stuff LordOfTheJungle! Very cool.

Just finished this painting this morning.
Beast Vs Hulk!
I don't think the fight would last very long, but it would be fun for a panel or two.

Inks/wash and some water colour. I used the wrong paper though- was intending to use hot press smooth 300 lb board, but I only had cold press stuff available.
It's more difficult to get crisp lines with a brush inking on that kind of stock, but it takes washes nicely (and is easier to make repairs than smooth board).

superecretid - thank you! You should definitely try out ink washes, I think you'd dig 'em.
Working wet on wet with a decent brush, you can pull off some pretty cool colour mixes and nebula type stuff blends.
I'd recommend using liquid transparent inks and/or liquid water colours to get that 'comic book vibrancy' into the colours, as opposed to using traditional water colour cakes/blocks (which i find harder to get bright colours out of).
I find inks to be a much easier (and more reliable) medium than markers- though you seem to have a pretty awesome handle on using markers! Awesome Dark Phoenix!

On deviantArt I recently entered a Original Character Fighting Tournament to get my creative juices going, here's the cover I came up with. I like how some of the coloring turned out, but I still have a lot to learn by way of foreshortening, drawing characters in perspective, and coloring.

Hi guys, awesome stuff this month as always. I'm utterly talentless at drawing but I am a serious lurker in these threads, and watching your techniques and sketches evolve is fascinating. On another note, I'm currently putting together a magazine and am looking for some illustrations. If anyone's game for being included, I'll be posting details over in the Weaponizer thread in the next few days. I'm going to have to try Manga studio - I'm currently using Photoshop CS5 - it has loads of new tools and updates from the version I was using till recently, so I've been slowly working through them.

My tablet's still borked (managed to scrape some cash to save my internet access and buy some food but that's all) so I can't ink anything...

Instead, I made a cover using bits of preexisting art (actually, pages from the comics that will go inside this thing).

I think it works. Might be wrong though, haha.

I still need to do inside front and inside back covers before I can send it off to ka-blam.

So, here I am popping up to show some stuff. I know a lot of folks around here are Alchemy buffs (you're how I found out about it, so thanks). Thought you might be interested in this animation I made using Alchemy. It's on Vimeo, so no embed I'm afraid...

Basic process: Set Alchemy to automatically record what's on the page to a pdf every 5 seconds. Torture photoshop by making it import hundreds of pages of pdf to individual images and spit them back out again at chosen screen res. Use Quicktime pro to convert image sequence to video. Chop it up, set to music and play with the timing in Final cut.

Crossposting because this is the first thing I've finished in a long. time, maybe as long as two years. Originally had another Idea, so was sketching for that, then this came to me whilst I was at work. As well as being the first finished thing, it's the first thing I've done that's not a doodle on my now not so new Intuos. Took 5 hrs. GreaseMonkey, I have to say I am seriously enamoured with that particular piece of work, and Oddbill, your portraits are beautiful.

T-shirt Design I made today for a Fundraiser to support Environmental Classrooms in Kahuzi Biega

This is a really positive project but I got to thinking some weird shit while making this. I used letters & mathematical symbols to represent the school. However, odd as it may seem, they don't actually teach things like that and instead the school is geared towards training the youth in environmental/wild life conservation. So here I am with my drawing table, youtube and mp3s, comicsbooks and pizza, and well these kids don't even really get to learn how to read because it's their job to protect mother nature from assholes like me (if they can get enough funding)? ramble ramble it's 4:14 am must stop thinking now

I'm working on some animations with 3D graphics wizard Laurie Ronne. I just got some more tests clip in the email today. Laurie is animating my faceless "city of gears" with the computer and I'm doing a hand drawn companion piece which are going to be projected in a gallery this Sept. The music is from my weekly jam sessions with a group of friends

Mang, this months work just blew my pants off. Great GREAT stuff err'body. Would have joined in sooner, but it's been a busy April so far. Driving cross country, committing felonious mycophagy, returning to werewolf country, etc etc. For the moment I'll just toss up my Venture Bros Art Jam piece, and eventually get around to scanning some of my other work from this month. Nothing fancy, just a Sleazier character study or whatever. Hope y'all dig it.

Sorry I've been off the radar for a bit. Was out for over 2 weeks housesitting for some friends, with a lethargic DSL connection on it's best day. So, aside from posts to Twitter and FB, I haven't been posting art anywhere else.

Playing with a new technique, for a more cartoon-like quick character sketch option. All of these were done strictly with ArtRage 3 Studio Pro, using imported Photoshop filters within the program. I've posted these in order, so that you can see the progression. All pictures lead to their correlating Flickr pages, where you can navigate to their larger sizes, should the detail-oriented of you so choose.

Loosely Influenced by the Star Wars character of the same name.

Didn't care much for the colors on this one. Might gut the colors and redo them later.

Started integrating minor light/shadow here, as well as minor filtering.

Here I started adding much more substantial lighting and shadow, with slightly heavier filtering.

By this one, I've hybridized it a bit with the linework I was using for much of my earlier Bot-A-Day pieces. Thinner than the new heavy cartoon lines, still thicker than the early Bot lines. Probably an hour was spend just fucking around with the background/atmospherics-- nothing fancy or of high detail.

I see these on Youtube a lot, so I tried to make one recently, for the station ident. I'm just
using Camstudio, which is free, but a bit of a fiddle to get the right kind of results with.
It might be sort of useful, for review purposes, but after making the vid, I'm not sure I've learned much,
except never to use Premiere again, unless the planets on fire. I'm going to try developing my
backgrounds more, as I think this is where I'm being lazy, and focussing too much on clothing.

Actually, a good question;
What's a good cheap app for MAC OSX that can do what CamStudio is doing here, recording screen activity as a movie? Or is there a better program that Mac can use that does the same thing. I've wanted to do some demo things like Ed's up there for a while. Any ideas?

@Paul Sizer, I did a quick google search, and Screenflow looks pretty good. The only limitation on the free trial is a watermark (otherwise fully functional).

@Paul Sizer: Screenflow is considered the best, but Screenflick works nicely, and is only $25. It savwes in .mov, and can export to many different types except for .sfw, I think uploading to youtube does that automatically though.

Basically, everything that is getting piped from your video card to your monitor is being written to a file on your computer at the same time. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the general idea.

With camstudio you can choose how many frames are recorded every minute and you have to decide
beforehand whether to save out a swf or an avi. There are a couple of other options to set the screen
resolution and one of them is a custom rectangle that you can draw over the working area. Its pretty easy
to use. Its also very bare-bones, which you could see as a strength.
Some of the other packages will also take care of editing for you, but if you just want to cue up a group
of Avi's theres bound to be a cheap option, such as WindowsMovieMaker. I found WMM to be a bit flaky
but at least it doesn't have Premieres problems with dodgy exporting/compressing of your finished film.

@Hey_Apathy - I never waste an opportunity to call my character drawing crap! :) its still pretty hit and miss. In this case I began the giant too low on the page and started running out of paper so his lower legs got pretty truncated, I fixed things a bit when I did the coloring but after I posted it they immediately stood out as being too short. I'd normally concoct some excuse like its a deformity caused by carrying all that heavy armor - along with his bowlegged stance :)

It was a lot of fun to make. Basically just a lot of violence and angst with ludicrous commandments. Surprisingly, I sold out of all the books I made! They were all hand bound, the covers inked and painted, and numbered to a limited edition.

I'm currrently submitting to publishers to see if it will infect bookshops. I'm looking to expand the 1st edition by creating more content and keeping the theme.

Is this is the appropriate place to ask for feedback on other possible avenues for publication? Or to get small press publishers interested in new work?

@BattGuano - thanks! I'm looking at your piece and I don't think your color sense is "poor". The way you added some of the background color to the knight's armor is really working for me.

@mojokingbee - thanks. Really like how spontaneous your inks are and how you tie it all up with a simple color. Especially the first one. I'm pretty sure B:TB&tB is showing in Australia. Producer James Tucker went to a con there last year for an appearance.

@mercurialblonde - I like the texture on the first one. your line work reminds me of Crepax a little, which I like.

A fairly recent six pager. And by fairly recent I mean it was done by me this year (I haven't done much art recently due to tablet issues and most of my pencil stuff isn't very good). I've just sent off this one (and couple other stories) to Ka-blam and I should get my proof copy somewhere in May, so it's a mini-celebration that I managed to finish the second issue. Enjoy! Comments are welcome.

@ aurora - that's a great strip, I almost didn't want the little guy to get eaten, but then my stomach started to grumble and my sympathies reverted.

Dear god, everyone is just too fucking amazing. You guys... seriously. Damn fine work, all of you.

I did this as sort of an attempt at minimalisation, since my stuff seems to be getting a bit out of control lately. The subject is a friend of mine, who really is as dangerous as he looks (red belt in Hapkido will do that for you) but who is, generally, not this angry-looking.

Such great work this month.

Vince, There Ain't No Stopping Him.
A painting I finished this weekend of one of my childhood toys.
My mom used to swipe red fingernail polish on the soles of my action figures. This way my friends and I wouldn't get our figures mixed-up. I got a hold of the fingernail polish and about half of my figures ended up as casualties. I'm going to paint some of these ladies and gents.

@ emonster- my mom did the nail polish thing also! ( I was red, my cousin had the pink) I never thought to use it as blood though , we preferred ketchup. There are still little bits of nasty tomato crust all over the old wrestling dolls.

Cosmic Hockey drawings ( work for hire but fun anyways, I actually never heard of hockey before) The client used to be a pro television sports caster for TSN/ NHL and now he's writing some weird stories & stuff...

Glad to hear it, HEY (can I call you HEY?). Someone at Deviant Art was whining a bit about his looks ("What, did he just step out of a gay pride parade?") Like my wife and I always say; there's personal preference and there's empirical data. Hot is hot, across the board. Acknowledging it isn't bad. Hell, I'd take him out for a cup of coffee. : )

To answer your question from a while ago, that Wolverine was done with a Pilot Soft Brush pen. And thanks for the Venture ref, I take that as a high compliment.

Apathy: A bit of progress was made on the animation until I got sidetracked. I tried uploading what I had but my computer was being weird for a month and not letting me upload any pics or videos anywhere. I'll try again today, since I didn't have any prob with that latest painting, although I only have a few seconds of the cartoon done...
