Went back to the house and grabbed an old 50mm f/1.8 lens that's been neglected in a drawer for god knows how long. I quite like the DOF when it's wide open like this.
This is possibly true, my face seems to transform when a lens is pointed at it. I still wonder what that picture Zo took of me a couple years ago looks like.
I tried a SPIT experiment. I went hiking a few days ago with my wife and daughter and was taking lots of pictures. At random intervals, I turned the camera on myself and snapped, without stopping what I was doing or saying (including a couple of macros).
@FC, I am totally on board with DIY camera equipment, I used to use a chinese soup take-out plastic container as a replacement for a Gary Fong Light Sphere (until I found a $5 knock-off in a New Delhi camera shop) but the beauty dish is one of those pieces of equipment that I think you cannot fake. There is some decent diffusion going on here but it doesn't create very flattering light. I have wanted to build one for a long time but honestly I don't think it is worth it. Just gonna have to suck it up and wait for the day when I can afford the real deal or else bill a fully equipped studio to the client. Technical rant aside, nice portrait, Ms Chan!
@Bankara: The dish is incomplete and the design will likely be reworked by the time i call it 'done'. The shot was also a quickie taken no more than maybe 1m away from the dish, not ideal, but i'll admit i was not really up to running down to the car to pick up my extra tripod in the middle of the night. I'd like to give this a bit more experimentation. From a theoretical point of view, if the conditions being created are similar, why should one cough up a three digit sum when something similar for considerably less will suffice? I have seen some excellent shots made with DIY dishes and some not so great ones with 'pro' ones. I would like to spend my money on flashes and lenses rather than overpriced reflectors and diffusers.
the replacement implant, 6 months later. the two teeth flanking it are caps with silver pins going into the roots.
apparently all is well implant-wise, MUCH better than the last time, when i had to get the previous one taken out & replaced, ratcheting it in ("we need a little more elbow grease, here"). without enough novocaine, mind.
