    I woke up unusally early this morning, so decided to make the most of it and head out with the camera. Sadly it was a little too overcast, but I managed a couple of decent shots.

    Finally got to give the new camera an astrophotography workout for the first time last weekend.







    They didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped, due to it being much more crowded than expected, so ambient light from people in their cars snuck in and made really long exposures not work out so well (that last is a seven minute exposure, and it took some doing to salvage it). But overall I'm happy. The D50 never got flares on bright stars, but the D7000 does. Next time hopefully it won't be so crowded, or so fucking cold.

    David, what kind of exposure did you have it at?

    ISO 800, 28mm f/2.8 lens, shooting RAW. If I drop the iso much below that I lose any deep sky objects unless I significantly increase the exposure time, and with my bodged together tracking rig an exposure longer than about 8 minutes starts to show noticeable star trailing (unless I've lucked out that night and gotten the alignment spot on, which is pretty rare). I wanted to give my 50mm f/1.8 lens a try that night, but it was so cold I could barely feel the camera, so switching lenses was out.

    Shit, John! Your florals are getting ridiculously good! Those are beautiful, man! Great light and composition, really nice focus, and the last one again evokes a Georgia O'Keefe wet dream or else a Mapplethorpe flower. Nice work, sir.

    @Bankara, Thanks! I've just ordered a couple of Georgia O'Keeffe books, have kind of always had her in mind from half-remembered articles - Mapplethorpe too. I've had a couple of years when I'd neglected photography - and especially floral work a bit, I had plans to start trying to sell prints, but have never had the concentration to get them off the ground. I also had membership of the Hillier Arboretum, which is a wonderful garden, but that's too far for me to get to easily now. But as I get my own garden up and running (moved in here in 2009, and it's been a bit of a blank canvas) I'll do a lot more. I want to get the conservatory cleared as well so I can use it as a daylight studio - too cluttered with unpacked boxes at the moment...

    One thing that I think was a step change as well was starting to treat digital as akin to negatives - I'd started off treating it like transparency (which I learned on), and being very disappointed with the results - as soon as I'd made that mental flip it all started working!

    I'm not a photographer but I tried to take a picture of the "WEED MARCH" ( aka underage inebriation in the park under the guise of political protest) on the way home from TCAF yesterday, I didn't but I think my camera got stoned ...



    don't know how it managed to go psychedelic or get multiple perspectives out of one shot but I thought it was neat.
