Purposely haven't read the rest of this thread, but I'm starting to read the first book in the series now. Other than not looking forward to chapters where it's 10-15 pages of "and then Daenerys got fucked" I'm really liking it!

The "and then Daenerys got fucked" part actually isn't that bad.

There isn't much of Dany getting fucked, and Drogo is a bit nicer than in the show.

Yeah, their first night together is actually quite touching in that "he-may-be-a-barbarian-who-essentially-bought-my-hymen-but-he's-rather-quite-nice" sort of way.

Okay, I'm reading it now and, yeah, it's not as graphic or as frequent as I thought it would. Keep in mind the only knowledge I had of the series was two episodes of the HBO show. So apologies for the ignorance!

No need to apologize. Just remember: it being on HBO means the sex and naked breast quotient goes through the roof. For instance, while Ned does meet Catelyn in a whorehouse in Kings Landing, I'm pretty sure there weren't any graphic descriptions of women with their bits hanging out in the book.

I agree. I haven't found the sex to be overt or gratuitous at all in the text.
Seems to be just right so far (for adult fantasy)... I'm about 1/2 way through book three.

You are in for a good ride Oldhat!

I'm truly enjoying it so far.

So there's no extended finger-banging while that head of the whorehouse guy is monologueing about how he'll rule the kingdom in the book? Lame.

    ;)

So I thought you guys may derive some amusement from this typo I found in the copy of A Storm of Swords I'm reading. I'll redact the character name in the quote in case that counts as a spoiler.

A character talking to his liege about another character's scurrilous invasion proposal says "yet ser [name] proposes we swoop down on the homes they left behind, to rape their windows and put their children to the sword."

Puts a whole new spin on Antoine Dodson, huh?

    Still in Storm of Swords.
Without being spoilery (still haven't peeked at any of those tantalizing windows up thread)....
On the train ride in I just finished the chapter that takes place during the wedding feast at the Twins.
All I can say friends is... what the fucking fuck.!?.!?
    I'm a little frustrated here....

I actually had to back several pages and read it again. I was so absolutely sure I had misread everything and all of that could not possibly have just fucking happened.

Heh, I had the same reaction almost shouting "no way!" and reading it again so I could wrap my head around what happened. Pity A Feast for Crows hasn't such exciting events as far as I've seen (started 3 days ago).
  5.  (9805.17)
    I read about that particular spoiler about ten chapters before it happened in the book. It made it so much worse for the dread throughout the lead-up chapters ;_______;

on the bright side, Danaerys and the Queen of Thorns are awesome?
  6.  (9805.18)
Like I've told my friends who are reading the books:
    don't stop.
However frustrated and upset you get...just don't stop.
  7.  (9805.19)
It's definitely worth it to see bad guys get theirs xD I'm watching Arya's kill list very carefully.

Oh man, who do you think is finally going to fuck up Ramsay Bolton? I hope it's Theon.

I'm also crossing my fingers that [book 3 spoiler]
Zombie Catelyn Stark does for Walder Frey in the end.
