@Argos and RenThingI sort of knew that, Ren, but had also kind of forgotten about the ELDEST bit. But even if you didn't know, there's SOME son of Robert buggering off with a very ornate helmet he made himself and sitting right next to Arya. That's pretty indicative. :)

Ok, have we watched Season 2 episode 2 yet?
I liked it a lot, many good small scenes. The bit between Davos and Salladhor Saan was priceless! Tyrion and Cersei were great. The short exchange between Tyrion and Varys was well played. Theon returning to Pike was very well done! The best scene in the episode for me was Tyrion dealing with Janos Slynt. I laughed a couple of times in there, and I knew what was coming.
This show really shines when they get two characters together for an extended bit of dialog.
Oh! Almost forgot the whole thing between Arya, Hot Pie and Gendry about whether or not two men in armor stabbing each other counts as a battle! That was almost pythonesque!
I thought it was very good overall, though still really all over the place (of necessity, I guess). Still utterly incomprehensible to a newcomer. I watched it with a friend who has a dvr so we kept pausing it while I'd explain who someone was or what they were there for, then continue. Without that, he'd have been totally lost. -

There were a couple of things though that departed from the book if memory serves:1. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Rhakaro live through the books?
2. Rob Snow doesn't follow Craster out into the woods; they find out about him giving his sons to the Others through the daughter/wife Sam rescues. -

Varys seems to steal any scene he's in, even from Peter Dinklage who can more than hold his own.
The bit with Craster and Jon where they left off is a pretty big departure from the books. I wonder if we'll see the violence that erupts at Craster's keep in Storm of Swords happen a bit early. And I wasn't absolutely certain, but imdb confirms the guy cutting potatoes with Grenn and Sam was Dolorous Edd. Need more Dolorous Edd, one of my favorite minor characters from the books. -

I blame the rampaging head cold that's had me since yesterday morning.
Also, gotta love HBO for making the hinted sexual relationship between Stannis and Melissandre more...explicit.

As someone who never read the books, I'm enjoying it. For once, it's nice not to know what's going to happen yet, to not have to be the one that understands this world and it's rules, or who everyone is and what their motivations are. It's actually really fun experiencing a series like this and it's all going to be a surprise. Definitely liked this episode better than the last. I hadn't thought about how Tyrion would react, being the Hand and dealing with the same people that Ned dealt with. The difference bring, that Tyrion knows how to play the game. Poor Ned. -
I also have to say that I love the tension between Tyrion and Varys and how it clearly stems not from a man who feels sexually threatened by this man talking to him woman, but the threat of Varys' whispers. I would imagine Varys is the ONLY one who could ever threaten Tyrion in that department.

Anyone notice Hannah Murray (sp?) in S2 E01? That means they have two of the cast of Skins now (The other being Robert's Bastard). Trivia for all!

Hmmm, another good episode. I foundMargery Tyrell's suggestions to Renly to be amusing and also make a certain amount of sense, she does seem the very pragmatic kind of character, doesn't she?

I'm really digging the Greyjoys.
I'm ready for them to stop mentioning that Cersei has ripped up lots of paper. That was a funny joke in the first episode. Now I feel like whenever Cersei talks about paper, or someone talks about paper to or in reference to her, I should take a drink. -

I thought Brienne was pretty bad ass. And fuck is that a tall, tall woman. -
Yes! Brienne is perfectly cast! I really can't wait for her story to kick in.
I also loved Theon's outburst. Though I don't think he ever had as clarifying a moment of outrage in the books, the show really needed it to put him on the map. He's actually coming off as much more sympathetic on screen than he did on the page.
Which is awesome for what is to come heh heh heh... -

Aaaaaaaaugh! Stop teasing! Purposefully waiting for the season to finish before I read the second book here, and then you people gleefully await the future of the show! THIS TORMENT IS TOO MUCH!!

@Magnulus -- I'm doing it the other way around so I'm reading the books before the season starts. I find it really enjoyable that way. -

I often have difficulty keeping track of massive numbers of characters. I find it helps to watch the show first, so that when I read it, I'm not constantly going "Who was that? Who's that?" With a name AND a face, it's slightly easier for me.
