   So watching the TV show actually got me excited to go read the books. I've just gotten to /A Dance with Dragons/.
   
   Am I the only one secretly hoping that after Season 3/4 or so, before it gets to the (non)-events of /A Dance with Dragons/, they veer sharply away from the books in the interest of actually advancing the plot...? I'm starting to think I wouldn't be at all sorry if they took a page or two from the /Dexter/ playbook and just ran with the plot...a few years into the future or so...
   
   The latest few episodes have certainly been excellent and held my attention, but I just can't see a whole season's worth of /Dance with Dragons/ down the road.

   Joffrey is going to a really fucking dark place, man. I mean, a lot of stuff before could have - at a stretch - been a result of a fucked-up upbringing and him still being basically a child. But that scene in the latest episode... Yeah, that one... I guess we already saw some indicators earlier in the series and especially in the OTHER scene earlier in the episode, but jeez. He's just a full-on psychopath, isn't he?

   it makes what's coming in this season during the battle at Kings Landing and what happens to him in book three so, so worth it

    The only one I take issue with is Daenerys/Palin. Daenerys is arguably the only living contender for the Throne of Westeros who takes the responsibility of ruling in a way at actually improves the lives of her subjects seriously. The fact that she is currently operating at the margins is an advantage, as anyone with a conscience that gets close to the iron throne is ground to a pulp.
    
    Daenerys is the real deal. She is less lacking in qualifications than most, and is more concerned with developing qualifications than most. The Palin comparison does not stand.

    I agree, oddbill. Also, I expect that by the time Daenerys actually makes it to her destination, she'll be more qualified and more compassionate to her followers than most, if not all, of the other active contestants for the throne. Sadly, all of those characters are probably going to die anyway, and the last book will be all about the Winter monsters chatting and eating stragglers.
    
    The Newt/Joffrey comparison is my favorite.

    Tonight's ep was the first in memory (entire series?) without a bit of nudity (excepting perhaps bare-chested Gendry). After the rest of the rampant nudity I figured they'd be all over the single-bare-breast style of Qartheen gowns.
    
    I was hoping they wouldn't neglect Quaithe of the Shadow! Her mask wasn't at all what I pictured, but looked quite cool nonetheless. Was it just me or did her eyes seem freaky-large?
    
    Also happy that Dolorous Edd is racking up the screen time.

    Bad shows. Naughty shows! But also the best shows on TV for quite some time. I guess it's up to personal taste whether that's despite the sex scenes, because of them, or if the sex scenes were completely irrelevant to the show's quality. Which isn't to say The Wire WASN'T good because of a lack of T&A. But come on... it's adult entertainment! I have no problem with the added scenes, I think they serve narrative compression, and I kind of dig the term 'sexposition.' Infodumping? Add some sex! Why the hell not?

    The problem with translating the books to the screen is that you lose a lot of the internal dialogue and motivations of the characters when you're not in their heads seeing what's going on. I interpretted that scene with Geoffry and his birthday present as driving the nail into the coffin on whether or not he could be fixed; as Tyrion said last night "The king is a lost cause."

    I loved the almost palpable tension in the scene between Tywin and Arya. Charles Dance is a hero.
    
    Not wanting to split too many hairs, but whilst Danaerys' handmaidens were bickering, all I could think was

    one of you is meant to be dead.
