True, and also giving a useful tool to do those non-canon scenes that illustrate who the characters really are if we were getting to see inside their heads (such as the scene with Ros and Little Finger about the death of the child and how Little Finger always gets his money's worth from his property).

I guess with the whole Jeyne Westerling thing,
we never really hear much about her in the books, all we know is that Robb falls for her, and that her father is a Lannister bannerman. With a TV show, they need to show us just what makes her so special that he would break his oath to the Frey's, and beyond that point it's fairly irrelevant where she comes from, so it may as well be Volantis.

I have to say I look forward to more from the Lord of Bones. He looked awesome.

I have to say I look forward to more from the Lord of Bones.

Thing I pointed out to my friend who has not read the books but who watches the show with me:

Check out the Lord of Bones' helmet. it is a skull, yes, but not a human skull...

Oh man I hope they show
    the giants,
but it looks like it might not happen until next season...

Yeah, looks like a number of things will be coming next season. I don't want to wait a whole year to see Strong Belwas, damn it.

    Tonight's episode:

    At first I was all
The battle's beginning and there's no chain, now Tyrion's cleverness won't be clear to the viewers

    and then I was
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA decoy ship make everything burn

Well played television writers, well played.

Tyrion still has a nose, I was wondering if that was even technically feasible for the series. The next episode is the season finale, where it looks like Jon is going to fight Qhorin. I hope Dany can burn the House of the Undying down walking out like badass - it would fit last years closer of her walking into the flames.

    What Agentarsenic said. Wow.

    In addition:
I loved the staredown between Sandor and Bronn. The alteration from the book was sufficiently ...incendiary to ignore the lack of Tyrion's chain. Tyrion's injury looked severe enough that it might result in losing his nose. Podrick Payne made an excellent showing. I loved the amount of music in the episode, the praying, the war drums, and...
...I add, with a resounding Fuck Yes!, this:

    Yep, mine as well.

RE Lord of Bones. Really liked the fact that the guy looks quite menacing but also supremely ridiculous, like if he wasn't so hard ppl would just endlessly take the piss out of him.
    • CommentTimeMay 28th 2012
In the books they do kind of take the piss out of him a bit on an ongoing basis - partly because all the wildlings are free people and only follow leaders they respect, and the Lord of Bones is kind of a dick. In the books he tries to give a lot of orders but nobody obeys, and Ygritte is always giving him put-downs.

Unfortunately I'm in the "great" state of Missouri tonight, visiting the mother-in-law, so I wasn't able to watch the show. Has anyone referred to the LoB as "Rattleshirt" yet?

The most significant deviation so far to me seems to be Shae. I won't go into detail, but the Shae of the book seemed significantly less genuinely caring at this point.

I've not read folk's comments, as I'm way behind.

Still, I've managed to catch the first three episodes, and I'm enjoying it. Anyway, I knew I would. Season 1 was one of the best things I've ever seen.

    That's me for now.

Brienne fucking shit up like KAPLOW!
Dany gettin roofless! I was hoping for a bit more from the House of the Undying, but the vault was priceless and should factor into the Unsullied next season.

Still no sign of the Reeds. They aren't the most important, but the Green Dreams and Mira as a love interest made the books a lot better. Hopefully they'll find them on the way North.
Next season: the Red Wedding. The other wedding. Manse!

    @AgentArsenic: The Reeds
are definitely in for next season. As is the Blackfish, Edmure, Tormund Giantsbane, and others.

I figured the House of the Undying
would lack all the little scenes of prophecy in the book. A couple wouldn't make sense, and I think others would turn out to be more spoilerish than foreshadowing. Dany may not know what Robb looks like and the book can keep it vague from her perspective, but I think the viewers would recognize him.

Maester Luwin's death hit me harder than I thought it would. And I got chills from that third horn blast even knowing it was coming. Stupid year-long wait for more.

I'm not going to spoiler anything, so if you haven't watched to the end of Season 2 now, the following will spoil some things for you:

Things I loved in the show that were significantly different than in the books:

Brienne being such a badass right out of the gate. I loved that scene on the road, the pained look on her face when they laughed at her and she was just ready to walk away with them laughing at her back but then no... they had to push it...

Dany wrapping shit up in Qarth like a boss. I love the little arc of that earlier scene where her uncouth barbarian followers are talking about stripping Daxos' house of jewels and gold, and she shuts them down and tells them to be civilized, then, after getting dicked around all season, she wraps it up with "loot the place!" I loved the empty vault. I don't even care how that all alters some future events, I am pretty confident if the show lasts long enough to get to them that there are ways to write through the changes. (That last bit with Khal Drogo was really touching!)

I thought the way they handled the build up to the Jon Snow / Quorin Halfhand duel made a whole lot more emotional sense than it did in the book.

All season with Arya and Tywin and Arya and Jaquen H'qar. Arya and anyone she does a scene with really. Just write her into every scene, it's ok!

And, in things I just plain loved:

Sandor Clegane all season - I mean, come on! There is no reason this character had to be this well done! A lesser show would have made him a much more heavy handed baddie. I loved every time he was on screen, every word he said. He was perfect! His meltdown at the Blackwater, His "killers" speech to Sansa, and all those glimpses of him chopping dudes in half! "There's women under the ground..." So. Well. Done.

Varys - They haven't deviated from the book with this character, but the actor playing him has done so much more with the part than I expected, the character lives more on screen for me now than he does on the page.

Sansa - she really came into her own from what was a sort of unlikable, thin character. Her little pep-talk to Joffrey where she makes sure he knows that she expects he'll be leading the battle from the front lines, in the thick of the worst fighting, as a real hero would, and even her traitor brother Robb does, was just a priceless psychological knifing!

Theon Greyjoy's long dark night of incessant horns!

There was so much great about this season. I can't wait for the next. I'm racing through book 5 now, so hopefully I can start talking to people who've read everything soon!

OOOHHHHH! Wife has planned a viewing for our friends, I HAVE TO WAIT A WEEK! A WHOLE WEEK! BEFORE SEEING THIS STUFF!

Is it at all nerdy of me to hope that some prop company does reproductions of Arya's coin? Did she even get the coin? SOMEONE TELL ME IF THERE IS A COIN!

    There is a coin.
