It is fall finale season. Justified and Fringe conclude this week and Community starts a two-part western-themed paintball extravaganza. This is exciting. I believe all fall shows are 1-3 episodes away from completion. Things might be a bit quiet around here for awhile.

Bump for the Fringe finale. Thoughts, everyone?

So, obviously next season is going to focus on the two universes coming together to stop the tears appearing in both worlds while, most likely, dealing with some new threat. I'm wondering if cases of the week will just completely go out the window now, as I don't really see how they could continue to make them relevant while still maintaining the pace and consequence of the main storyline.

My immediate theory on the big what-the-fuck moment with Peter at the end is that he's essentially been the bridge all along. He existed solely to connect the two worlds, thus allowing them to both eventually reach a peaceful existence. However, this leaves two big questions:

1) What actually happened, and what does everyone now perceive to have happened?

2) Seeing as how they're not going to knock a main cast member off the show like that, how is Peter going to come back?

Just watched Fringe finale too. O-O

I figured they'd do something like that, but didn't predict the Peter part. I figured He'd snap back to the story's present and they'd just kill Walternate when he showed up or that he'd combine the universes into one. I remember reading somewhere online that Oliva's evil Step Dad would play a bigger part in Season 4 (may have be a thing for Season 3 though) so perhaps he'll be the new big bad when the new season starts and they get the Walternate issues ironed out?

 SO, Fringe...

All sorts of theories around what happens next. The producers drop some hints here.

Suggestion elsewhere (AV Club) that Peter has become an Observer. Not sure I'd buy that, but he'd look good in a snap-brim fedora.
My colleague Kevin of grinding.be notes, strongly, that the ending was pretty much identical to that of the under-rated Charlie Jade.

I loved how the Yin/Yang relationship of the worlds & Walters is explicitly mentioned - which makes Peter the Shen, the element of human consciousness which reconciles them.

Loved it. Would have been perfect end to whole series but I'm overjoyed there's at least one more to come.

I'd be fine with that, I wasn't a huge fan of that romantic plot tangle to begin with.

The dangling thread I'm wondering most about is the gentleman with the X shirt from LSD that Olivia said was going to kill her. There's been a real decline in quality since around Season 3 and the last episode of 6 was appalling. I'm giving Falling Skies a chance. Someone mentioned it being reminiscent of Jericho, and I second the thought. There's enough there to bear sticking with it for the time being, and I have some ideas what's going on in the background.

The "uncle" teaching the older kids mentions why multi-legged creatures built bi-pedal walkers. They're experimenting on the children. Wouldn't be surprised if the bi-pedal walkers turn out to be the end result of some of the kids being worked on. Or, in some fashion, the children are being "converted," seeing a grunt alien getting killed in a warehouse, it had very human reactions before dying. Wonder if it used to be a human.

I like Noah Wylie, and Will Patton is going his best "asshole military guy" part, and it works for the most part. it did seem a bit slow, so I'll watch it for now. It's still going to be a while before Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy come back on; if it doesn't really grab me by then, then I'll drop it. I can only watch so much TV.

 @goverment spy:

My suspicion, after seeing the preview last year, was that Falling Skies was going to essentially be a survival drama, where the aliens were a drop-in menace whose nature wasn't going to be very important. It could still be that way, but there are hints that things may be more complex than that.

Someone on another board had this suggestion:

The multi-legged aliens are another, conquered race, controlled by those harness things. The bipedal walkers are patterned after the "original" race.

 Anyone seen this yet?

The Three Musketeers (2011)

Seems like a (completely not like the book previous films) Steampunk version of the story, with Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich, Christoph Waltz, Matthew MacFadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson.

At first, I thought, oh great, not another one. Then I watched the trailers, and saw two airships firing cannons at eachother, some flamethrowers, and other random gadgets.

It may not have the class of the novel or previous versions, but looks like a fun popcorn steampunk movie, in the vein of Downey's Sherlock Holmes.

I haven't liked anything he's done all the way through... I keep hoping he'll make a horror movie one day, because the creepy buildup before the action starts in Event Horizon, AVP and Resident Evil is actually pretty good. Unfortunately he obviously wants to make action movies, and his action never lives up to his creepy buildup.

Back to actual TV... I'm kind of surprised that we've not made more fuss about a Whitechapel member getting a Channel 4 show made from his work... specifically Reynolds' Blood Sweat and Tea has been adapted as the show Sirens. Black comedy about ambulance crew - pretty good so far.

@gov. spy --> I saw the trailer last night in 3D, ahead of Transformers 3. It certainly grabbed my attention, but I did just pay money to see Transformers 3, so my opinion might not be worth too much.

That said, the Richard Lester Musketeers movies are a guilty pleasure of mine.

Yes, we're in July, but just adding my quick thoughts on Teen Wolf as it goes on. I watched it out of initial curiosity, but it's held my interest and really did some very interesting things in the latest episode. There were a couple of 'proper horror' moments in there that worked well. It's clearly trying to be the new Buffy, however it's not doing the monster of the week thing, but has a couple of simple character driven stories that are unfolding slowly as it goes along and is starting out by building the ensemble cast up slowly.

The main character's werewolf makeup is stupid, but his 'look' is a story point as it contrasts with an actually quite scary beastie. The vaguely mysterious 'Angel' character who hangs around in the background as a sort of mentor with his own story that's unfolding is total girl-nerd-bait, looking like a proto-Clive Owen with extra muscles. I'm slightly too heterosexual to fully appreciate him, but I can see what they're trying to do there.

I think the main difference between this and all of the other Buffy wannabes and things like Twilight is that like Buffy, the actors actually can act and the supporting cast actually supports and are interesting and not merely there as expositionary foils to the main character. It's copying the 'school is horror' metaphor that Buffy did, but is moving more slowly with it.

The direction is also good, with special effects being very subtle but effective. There were two effects shots in last nights episode that were massively impressive. One is a kind of spoiler, so I won't mention it, but the other was simply the way in which the fully clothed character's head hit a pillow to sleep and then the pillow fell away behind him to show him in a school corridor, in the same clothes, with the same expression on his face. It excellently summed up that feeling we've all had sometimes, when everything's getting a bit much and sleep and waking melt into each other and we just keep going, not remembering if we've changed since yesterday or not, and that being the least of our worries.

Anyway, yeah, Teen Wolf; stupid film turned into a decent TV series. There's your new Buffy then and unlike Twiglet, actually watchable by humans with eyes and brains.
