~45min speedpainting, playing around with some technique ideas. Custom brushes used to create initial structure forms in Photoshop, filtering and colors done in ArtRage.

Hello, I come here to ruin the high quality at which this thread started... by posting my doodles :D

It's second of my short comics from this year so not hte most recent work (the tablet's still out of order so I'm stuck with pencils... and my pencils aren't very exciting).

I think stylewise it was somewhat inspired by Dungeon.

@initiatezao - hiya :), it's all digital, predominately done in Corel Painter 11, then exported intp pixelmator for a grungey texture layer. Not too much faffing around with layers on this one actually, as I was working light to dark for a change I was forcing myself to think a little differently.

Really love Abe's pixelated camoflage shirt, I'd buy one of those shirts. :)

@mojokingbee: Thank you, clarity of storytelling is one of the things that are very important to me when it comes to making comics. I don't think I'll ever be an amazing artist so I'll at least try to be a great storyteller, heh.

Meanwhile, while my tablet is still borked (and any money that falls into my pockets goes for food/bills) I've been experimenting again with pure pencil comics. So I have a VERY important question and if I could get as many answers as possible I'd be very grateful.

Below you have two edits of the same scan. Which version do you think looks better, the upper one (where I "tresholded" the entire thing thus maing it pure b/w) or the lower one (where I just upped contrast to about 80% and desaturated it, leaving smoother greyscale pencils).

(it's just a quick doodle to try out things) :)

Hello, I'm new here and I had a question about the rules. I saw this rule in the stickied thread:

Does this refer to fan-fic (stories about existing heroes) or any of your own fiction? I have recently finished a free, digital comic and would love to get some feedback here, but i don't want to break the rules. Thanks!

@teh new new: Thanks, man!! It's actually nothing mysterious, just pencils, inking, white inks for the lights, somecharcoal pencil and retouching the contrast with photoshop or any other image edition tool. The real sheet actually looks terrible,full of spots and stains and shit. It's terrible.

@mojokingbee - there's such life in your work! I actually tend to pull your pictures and add them to my inspiration folder because you are loose, organic and incredibly coherent, and there's so much to explore in your work.
@mercurialblonde - I've shown your work to some artist friends of mine and they are so jealous. I really admire your style, so evocative.
@HerrHussein - Shame you didn't get the Aquaman R-R in, would have really topped off the thread. Your work emotes incredibly well, it's a lot to do with your colours, but your figures are also really expressive while maintaining a degree of subtlety. What did you work in for this?

Here's a piece I did quickly for some fun on the bank holiday. It's a steampunky spiderman. All these R-Rs are taking their toll. Gonna start putting up my own project soon though, concepting a lot lately.

@mercurialblonde: All right, thanks for the only comment on the thing.

I've asked elsewhere too and so far comments are split between both. Seems people prefer the upper one for stronger/darker lines while others prefer the bottom one becauseof the pencil textures so I guess I'll try to achieve both (maybe actually ink the more delicate lines or at least double them).

Anyway, end of rant.

@HEY APATHY! - Thanks a million. I've been experimenting a lot on whitechapel. The Godzilla one was specifically an attempt to use more black, white and unbridled colour. The more recent two are using less outline (none for Aquaman) and I filtered my colours with Color layers over different parts of both. I'm also trying to use as little white as possible. All done with Wacom+Photoshop (damn wavy lines!), pencil sketched for practice but drawn from scratch on the wacom.

@Aurora Borealis - I JUST saw your question in your second post. I agree with mercurialblonde, the second one has lovely texture and a bit more something.

@Valente - It's a samsquanch! I really like the hands and feet and the hatching, yum yum.

Been mainly sketching lately, trying to take what I've learned with the brush over the past year, and really nail down just how exactly I'd ink a comic book character. This is the furthest I've taken a drawing in this looser style. Oh, and I cut his skull off a little, but this is ole Frank Castle. Kind of imagining him as a Tier 1 Operator here. Just playing around with him, you know *cough* as if I'd been asked to do so by the publisher *cough* *cough* Not exactly sure that the House of Ideas would respond well to this, but they asked me.

@ LordoftheJungle- thanks damn technology is crazy these days. The no outline for Aquaman was really interesting I couldn't figure it out almost a 3D type rendering. I only work with ink so everythings an outline but in reality nothing actually has black linework around it. Nice experiments

I did this yesterday evening after listening to CSNY's 'Ohio'. Was going for a kind of Lino/Graphic look.

Then I started this one because the 3 subjects have great distinctive heads on them. It's a work in progress, still deciding on the narrative. Want to get "Our Universe's Walter Bishop" in there too.

@mojokingbee - Thank you... I'm a bit out of my element when it comes to backgrounds/scenery/landscapes, so I appreciate the compliment. BTW, I rather like the kangaroo character, it reminds me of some of Jamie Hewlett's Tank Girl work.

@JP Stargazer - Thanks... I'm really enjoying the lines and textures of your inks, they remind me of some older comic book inking styles that we don't see as much of these days.

@Lordofthejungle - Right back atcha, I'm rather enthralled with your Spiderman 1899 piece!

@Miranda - I could happily get lost in that piece, looking at it. Then again, I like that about your work in general, so it should be no surprise that I like this piece as well.

@Valente - Wow. That Disco Fish flyer has some serious punch to it. That will certainly get the attention of those who see it, I'm sure.

Decided to start doing daily(ish) batches of thumbnail speedpaintings for practice purposes. Here's the initial batch, from yesterday:

(Clicking through goes to the Flickr page for it, but the images aren't any larger this time around. Originals were twice the size, but for whatever reason, Flickr scaled them down-- I'll try splitting the batch in half, next time.)

Strictly Photoshop, using a mix of basic brushes, and custom brushes that I made. 5-20 minutes a piece, depending on which one it is. Order of completion is left-to-right, top-to-bottom. There are much shorter techniques for generating quick, random thumbnails, but I think it's important to to be able to do them from scratch, as well. After all, without some basic art skills to draw upon, who would we be, as artists?

As we all know, thumbnails are intended to be rough, as are often speedpaintings, and these are no exception. These are intended as foundations to eventually build larger, finished pieces from.

Busted this out this evening. I'm donating an issue of my comic with an original hand drawn cover to a silent auction benefiting a young woman who is rather sick in my hometown. Tried out an ink wash with this one for the first time. I like the results enough to continue experimenting with it.

not smoking is making life better but man things are rotten right now. I've been finacing a lot of my madness with Art Council grant money since 2009 but not much came through this season. Peter Falk played the role of his life as Columbo. The show is formulaic and the legality of Columbo’s method is questionable at best, but I love the show. It’s a reverse murder show. We see the murder, means, and motive in the first 15 minutes, then we get to watch Lt. Columbo slowly unravel the twisted web of violence. It challenges the comic book storyteller in me. How could you do a Columbo comic in 22 pages, and have Columbo show up on the 3rd page? Murder montage? I’ll give it a try sometime, I’m sure.

Some trivia for you, just to get to watch an episode sometime if you haven’t (it is streaming on Netflix after all). Peter Falk’s performance was unique to him. His good natured politeness and bumbling were what he used to get to his suspects, unnerving them to the point that they’d crack. To get the best out of his guest star murderers, or perhaps just to be a jerk, Falk would ad lib and talk over the guest’s performance to get them to actually dislike having scenes with him. So, when you have Leonard Nemoy yelling at Columbo on screen, he probably is actually frustrated with Falk.

More trivia, which explains the dead Batman in the background. Adam West’s Batman show went from 1966 to 1968. Columbo one month before Batman’s last episode aired. The world’s greatest detective passed the torch to the world’s most annoying.

More daily(ish) batches of thumbnail speedpaintings for practice purposes. One from yesterday, and one from this morning:

20-40min. Photoshop, from scratch, using regular and custom brushes.

20-70min. The one in the middle needs a bit more fleshing out, but I'm done messing with it for the moment. Background on the right is a bit to indeterminate, but that's something I'll clean up if/when I turn it into a real piece.

Again, none are intended to be finished pieces. Simply potential foundations to start real pieces from later. Larger versions can be found via Flickr by clicking on the images.

Columbo was a great example of a show being elevated to something special by it's star. On paper, it's a completely formulaic murder-of-the-week show with a slightly clever twist (having the audience know the killer from the get-go), but DAMN if Peter Falk didn't make it entertaining.

@ mojokingbee; Both characters are very feminine in nature in my opinion. There's the given that Wiccan is homosexual and thus those traits may be inherit. However, both act in a nurture manner. When you dawn the title of Robin, you are thrust into being everyone's big brother which then causes you to have to filter everything. I did try to stress that with their poses. Excellent eye. Speaking of eyes, mine has been glued on all your bits for months. Keep it up!

If I'd known previously how fucking easy it is to make furniture, I'd have been doing this twenty years ago.

Progress shot of the six person dining table I'm currently working on. Turned legs from Home Depot, ply tabletop cut to size instore, skirts and edging hand cut at home. Primed with two coats of white gesso and two of lemon yellow acrylic house paint, design applied with Derivan low viscousity acrylics. I'm about a third of the way through applying the colours, using multiple transparent coats for a sfumato effect.

It's a law of cat behaviour that one must always photobomb every picture wherever possible.

@kevinmellon, Really amazing brushwork! I like the sequential study on your site too.

Last week was FCBD, but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to catch up on reading until this morning. The big surprise was the free Mickey Mouse issue, reprinting a story by Floyd Gottfredson. I was really struck with how gorgeously drawn the cartooning was, but the story really pulled me in too. I guess somewhere along the way, I had written off Disney cartoon characters. Turns out I just wasn’t looking at quality reprints of the greatest material. I’m definitely going to pick up the hard cover next month, I need more Gottfredson in my life.

In the meantime, I’ve been feverously working on more Big Boy pages, really wrestling with style, wanting to push it more into cartooning, and away form the silver-agey beginnings I had originally intended for it. Combining what I’ve learned from Osamu and Gottfredson, it’s really starting to come together. Looking forward to showing you the work soon!

Three new paintings done for the Reno Bike Project, will be on sale at the Northstar resort in Lake Tahoe this weekend for the Tour of California bike race. I did four paintings last month that were bike related and sold, but my camera was out of commission, so I didn't get any photos, which is a bummer. Here is the very brief segment of animation that I did in March (I think...). Crazy stuff would have happened eventually, but I was animating chronologically. Because I don't know how to animate to existing audio, I was going to do the voices later...

thankee to all for their kind comments. I do say yes Im aware of certain shortcomings in most images too and I am seeking to improve upon them all. and thanks to @paul sizer for his kind comment on the coloured piece. I rather enjoyed doing it, even if the face doesnt match the photo. at all. :P but learning to use copic markers is fun even if Im using the wrong kind of paper.

I don't know how or why (1-quit smoking 2-meditate in park 3- draw Spider-man ) but things are looking up around here.
I started talking to a commercial designer about doing some illustrations for him and next thing you know I convinced him to help me make virtual paintings. These are rough but we are going to do 3D renderings of my cityscapes that the audience/user can navigate through with a video game controller...

phew! now I can drain the tub and put the razor blades away for at least a few more weeks! Hah

This is today's installment of Last Samurai of Mars

I did this last night while listening to black metal/EMA, and feeling bluesy about not having a job. I really like the last panel. You can see the sleepiness creep in though, in the casual misspellings. Though I kind of wish elaborate had two a's. It looks better that way I think.

I couldn't find the right brush at that hour, otherwise I would have written a poem about Mac and Cheese, and the moon over the top of it in white.

@Suggymoto..i used sketchbook and pogo stylus. I've used brushes and it's more stable than sketchbook. The recent update on sketchbook has made a few improvements and is less crashy. Curious about the wacom stylus...let me know what you think of it when you get it.

@Hey Apathy: Yeah I meant brush on the computer. If I had had time I guess I could have just used the brushes I had on hand and then scanned it in over the top. But yeah I draw these on paper, an then do all of the coloring on the machine. Your city scapes are insane. If you can replicate that stuff in your 3D city stuff, it's going to be insane.

@hey apathy - aside from the lizard and the Videodrone dvd, that's about how the rest of my workspace is. :) I have a computer table and an art desk. The cintiq goes back and forth 'tween the two as needed. The rest is piles of books, bristol and receipts. I'm pretty bad about piling stuff up around me as I work.

@donnie darko - That's really great. You should send it to James. I think he'd dig it.

@Hey Apathy - my style's not for everyone. The apartment's not just yellow, either - the living room is a combination of golden yellow, yellow ochre and the lemon yellow you see behind the table; the spare bedroom is done in magenta, rust red and diox purple, and the main bedroom is turquoise, phthalo blue and ulramarine blue. My place would give you seizures for a month afterward.

@Imaginary People - glad you like it. Drop me a line if you'd like a custom piece of your own at any point, I'm considering doing this for a living once the apartment is finished.

@Greasemonkey- Unfortunetely I'm going to be in Ottawa performing at some art festival that weekend. I was lurking on the other thread but didn't want to speak up because I wasn't sure if I was in the Ottawa show or not. It's too bad because while I don't drink, smoke or eat sausages, I do do scenes from Blue Velvet and rather passionately I might add. I'm sad too cause I could really use some flesh and blood socialization these days, hopefully next time. (I've often wished this place was a cafe and all these cats were popping in out drawing pictures and talking to one another face to face)

@mojo - RE: SBP Scratchdisk. No, at least not that I know of or can see. SBP is meant to be really light weight (it really slows down the higher above 400 dpi you go), so there shouldn't be much of a need for one. If you're finding you need files to react faster, try saving alt versions with flattened layers. Like have your base file of 5 or more layers, make a flat copy, work on top of that with more layers, and so on.

If I have to go above 6 or more active layers, I just use Pshop or Manga studio. I try to keep sketchbook pretty light and no hassle, but that's just me.

@ imaginary- I used the "convince a graphic designer who knows how to do this kind of stuff to work for free program" I'm just the artist/director. Michael Peters & Laurie Ronne are doing the 3D works under my instruction, they believe there is a future in it (HAH HAH!)

@Hey Apathy - Really glad you're back to being positive, your output is staggering, great stuff.

I'll top off my May with these two. This is the process stuff for Supergirl. I just came up with a look and went hell for leather into the drawing:

My warm-down from the Supergirl illustration, it's a young Fionn MacCumhaill (Irish Mythological Hero - Superpowers: All knowledge, accessible upon a moments meditation; super wisdom - a supernatural control preventing abuse of his abilities; semi-divine, can shift between planes of existence; alleged immortality; supernaturally skilled fighter/hunter). This is the main character from my personal project (in development with a writer friend).

@mojokingbee - My process is under development, it's probably my main weak point. In the past I tended to dive right in, but it doesn't make for the best narrative from me. I'm not instinctively creative, I can just instinctively render. Creativity takes legwork for me. Your stuff has been incredible this month. Really exciting character designs, comic characters and action shots.

@HEY APATHY - I'm positively giddy at the prospect of seeing your work 3D rendered. Also, that Spiderman comic you made killed with me and a few friends.

@mercurialblonde - Thanks and thanks for showing all your sexy comic stuff this month too, I really like Krogalcaster. Nice Tank Girly stuff too!

@kperkins - Loved your Supergirl, shame ya couldn't post it. I shall be doing a lot more of the Celtic Mythology in coming months so I'll keep you all updated.
