@SteadyUP: Oh, I certainly hope so. But, let's remember that he's a Democrat, and there's nothing Democrats do better than snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Nevertheless, it's certainly a medal on his chest.

A drone would've been one thing, but it's crazy to me to think that there's a guy somewhere out there that actually walked into a house and put a bullet in him. Imagine being that guy right now.

Wow. Just. I'm glad I didn't turn in early after getting home from the convention this weekend.
@lampcommander I predict those movies will be blockbusters, at least in the U.S.

This is where the Dems need to take a page from the Republican playbook: Declare victory in the War on Terror.

This is a C-Span link to the actual speech, though it's catch as catch can at this time if the video actually plays. I imagine it is getting hammered by traffic right now:

Video and a complete transcript also here.

Any jokes I said, I said on twitter. And any speculation on how this hits Obama's administration from a public relations standpoint has already been talked about 100 times. As a Canadian who might not "get it" (as I've been told a few times tonight), I'll probably get a lot of negative comments in regards to my feelings on the celebration of anyone's death, as horrible as they are.

But I'm going to congratulate the US on achieving much-needed closure on a hunt that was more symbolic than anything. You're always going to have the threat to your country. It will always be there. But I'm glad that the hope and confidence to overcome it all has been brought to you.

I have a HELL of a lot more to say, but it's neither the time or place. I'll just leave it at that.

My entire college campus is out rallying and celebrating, apparently.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here finishing the final draft of a paper on Art Spiegelman's In The Shadow Of No Towers. It's all very surreal.

I found it interesting that the Al Jazeera corespondents were tending to suggest that this was not a profound tactical victory, no matter what its value as a political victory is. But, I suppose that the political victory might be the one that ultimately counts, and if the rest of the country decides to celebrate as one, just like the folks on campus seem to be, well... I suppose that can only be a step in the right direction.

If we're really lucky, perhaps this will be a moment of celebration for the entire world. Obama certainly framed his speech that way, which I think was an excellent strategy.

I'm a Yankee, and I don't celebrate a death. Not a one. Not even his.

So Robin, chances are, you're not alone in your thoughts.
