Friday I trekked to NJ to go to the Chiller convention all weekend where I helped a friend film, took photographs, was told I should do stand up by an actor from The Warriors, got a Killer Klowns poster signed by the blonde lead, was asked by Pete Timony why I didn't return to writing (which was a really fabulous compliment), witnessed a woman show Loni Anderson her surgery scars in the Ladies bathroom, hung out with Tony Clifton (who I saw perform earlier that evening), wandered the hallways of the hotel with half a wedding cake belonging to "That Mother Chick" of Danzig fame, woke up to find a KIT replica parked next to us, discussed lederhosen with the original Augustus Gloop, discussed Two Girls One Cup with the Japanese fellow from Human Centipede, and interviewed Joyce Hyser. She was my first girl crush, and she and Annie Lennox had severe influences on my child brain. I was a giddy nervous shaking mess, AND SHE HUGGED ME. We might have talked about her breasts.

There was more awesome, but I'm already rambling too much. WHEEEEEE!!!!

But when I got HOME, oh man. I had all this stress and decided to go run it out. Through some alternations between running and briskly walking, I managed to cover 1.5 miles, which is pretty awesome for my second time running this year.

Afterwards those endorphins were just kicking in and I was feeling so wonderful. The shower made it better and the small curry I had for dinner just topped it off. By 8.30pm I had made myself a cup of decaf tea and was watching some stuff on the computer. It's great to feel so content and relaxed.

Also, I finally got word, I HAVE OFFICIALLY PAID OFF MY COMPUTER! I'm thrilled about that.

Additionally, tomorrow my coworker brings me Season 1 of Deadwood. A friend shared a great little Antonio Machado poem with the repeated line "caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar." Roughly translates to "wayfarer, there is no way, the way is made by walking."

In the this is all convoluted and easily not as good as all that. But it's been a good day to be alive. How 'bout that?

Yesterday a friend gave me a free ticket to see Rush, and even though I had to bail out after hour 2 due to prog rock fatigue (and during Peart's solo, too, which means I have to hand my union card back) the boys were very good. Childhood heros, sometimes they don't disappoint.

Also cooked for the first time in ages. Honey and mustard glazed pork ribs on a bed of root veggies, red onion and apple, braised in beer. (I blame Robin, obviously.) It turned out to be just as glorious as it sounds. I left it to rest overnight, and to take some of the liquids back in, and will warm it up tonight with some hasselback taters.

ETA: Nearly forgot! The weather is now bearable enough to work outside, so I managed to start working on building that Jazzmaster. Yesterday I did the rough shaping for the body contours, and managed to get the 1/2" radius on the body roundover down perfectly in a couple of places by freehand. Yay! And the owner of the coffee shop/roastery I frequent has turned out to be a beer enthusiast who has never been to the Town Crier pub, which is my favorite place and is walking distance (50 international beers ON TAP). I'm fixing this problem by taking him out for a drink tomorrow after work. Also! So, my job entails clearing carts in front of a home improvement and hardware store. Yes, I'm that pathetic. I see all kinds of shit (sometimes that word is meant literally... diapers, people, are not meant to be changed in a parking lot) left in carts, but this is the first time anyone has left a cardboard box full of spiderweb, with a devil-spawned hate engine with an ass the size of a marble sitting in the middle of it.

I hate spiders, and I'm already having kind of a bad day. So, I summon my courage and stomp the living shit out of that box. The spider is a black-and-grey gooey smear on the bottom of the box. I feel happy.

Then, I take the box back to receiving, where we take all our trash so we can chuck it into the compactor at the end of the day. One of the cashiers asks me what happened to the box. "There was a spider," I say. "Ah," she replies. "Wanna see the guts?" I ask, because I have gained something of a reputation as a weird fucker at my workplace, and I kind of like that reputation, so I will sometimes go out of my way to reinforce it. "Sure," she says, which is a pleasant surprise.

So there we are, gazing down at the mangled, practically-liquified corpse of a black widow, when something in the web starts twitching. We both jump, and we manage to pinpoint what it is - a thing that looked like just a clump of dirt, is now moving and wriggling. I'm pretty sure both of us are both thinking "oh shit, that was its egg sac and we're about to be inundated by a hundred black widow babies!" I tell the cashier to go get the spraypaint, but before she moves, the dirt clod bursts open. A black, sharp, spindly-looking leg emerges. We both scream like little girls (the cashier is, herself, a little girl. I offer no excuse for myself). Another led bursts out, then another. I ready my stompin' boot again, but then I realize "wait... if those were baby spiders, their legs wouldn't by that big, would they?"

Then a pair of adorable fuzzy antennae emerge, and a little caterpillar-like head comes out, looking up at us like "What was that noise? And who the hell are you people?"

It was a moth, probably woken up a little early from all my loud, angry spidercide. I don't know HOW the hell the cocoon survived, but somehow it did. That's when it occurs to me that the splat on the bottom of the box, formerly known as black widow, had been keeping that cocoon in its web, waiting for a newly-reborn form of beautiful life to emerge, so that it could meet it with drippy, evil fangs a-waiting.

The moth picks its way across the web, with a little help from the cashier. It crawls up the side, and lets its wings dry (this is when we figure out it's a moth, not a butterfly, as its wings are swept backward. We move the box as far away from the trash compactor as possible, and go in to check on it every now and then. By the time I went home, it was still drying its wings, but it was active, little antennae twitching, completely unaware of the grisly fate it had escaped.

I found a strength training buddy today, HOORAY! Turns out my friend Chris does a lot of weight lifting as part of his FtM transition, and has become very knowledgeable about the various muscle ...

Only downside is that I did my strength training just after my spinning sessions today, which revved my metabolism like whoa (good), but made me ravenous for the rest of the day and I ended up eating waaaay too much (bad).

BUT, I ordered a foam roller on Amazon yesterday, to help me massage and stretch my muscles (good!), so I'm super excited for that to arrive :)

As I was driving to my Japanese final tonight a dude called me. didn't recognize the number but I told the person to wait while I dug out my hands free set. Got it all set up and he was still there. Turned out the artistic director of my theatre company passed my name to him as someone to call when one is in a bind and needs a stage manager stat. Pretty fucking, cool, right? I'm dependable and thought of as such by people who do work I really admire. Sweet.

I just couldn't really think about the project he was talking about it while trying gear up for Japanese so I asked him to email me the info. I knew the project would be troublesome. I'm in desperate, desperate need for a break. I've been going like gangbusters for three months between two plays, two voice classes and my Japanese class I haven't really had time to think and be, let alone clean and eat well. And this dude wants me to sign on ASAP. they start tech next weekend...

Oy vey. This isn't the Troubling Things Thread. Which is good. Just...it's nice to have a stranger call me up and offer me money for the stuff I can do because he heard of me from someone else I worked for. Fucking SUCKS I had to turn him down. The resume thing is oddly enjoyable, and I am trying to savour it since I know I will never again find it enjoyable for the rest of my life (most of the enjoyability comes from actually being able to put Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Minor in Philosophy on it, which makes me feel all fuzzy).

Lessee...yesterday I decided to hook up the lighting rig for the first time (finally got the part from China) and experimented with some self portraits taken with it and the new remote that I just got. The result was pretty decent and I look forward to reading The Strobist and experimenting more. And I really can't wait for the umbrella to come in!

Today I found that I have lost some weight and I'm moving in to the more comfortable area that I was in pre-winter (the season had me gaining 15lbs. I've lost 5 so far). Wednesday was my last spinning class of the quarter, and my instructor said she think's I'd make a great spin instructor and should get certified. Then today I got complimented on ym supported handstand by another student. And I'm back on track to losing weight.

I also just gave my oral presentation for my discussion section for a class, and out of all of the pitches, mine was voted as the best one to present in lecture, so I gave my pitch again to the lecture hall. I was in my office, and I hard a loud noise on the day room floor, and a bunch of inmates scattered. I walked out, and saw one inmate with a bloody nose, and another being held back by one of his gang associates. I told everyone to go to their cells and went to call my Lieutenant, when BOOM! it sounded like a bomb went off. There were somewhere around ten people fighting, all around me, a couple chairs flew in the air, I ducked one. I went to step back, and hit my radio alarm, calling for back up. Inmates were running everywhere, several of them were fighting. Someone picked up a wet floor sign and started bashing someone else's face in. I was alone with somewhere over ninety inmates, and ten to fifteen were actually fighting. The rest were running all over the place. I felt pretty impotent; there's not a lot one man can do alone in that situation. Everything was happening so fast, and back up takes so long to show up.

Three inmates holed up in one cell while the other gang threw chairs and bloody wet floor signs at them.

Lt. shows up with a bunch of co-workers, and we start taking inmates down, cuffing them and getting them off the floor. Those that don't want to be picked up get the Hell out of the way. I start locking cells, securing the unit. I'm in the corner, badly lit area, and as I go to secure a cell, I slip in blood and almost fall, but instead I my left foot keeps sliding forward with no traction in the blood, and I succeed at doing the forward splits. I've never been that flexible.

The unit gets secured without too many problems, a couple of inmates are taken to the hospital, another few are put in segregation. My unit is trashed, there is blood everywhere, and then my shift is over and I go home. Hadn't had a drink in several weeks due to trying to encourage my girlfriend to quit drinking, but I decided I needed to self medicate. Stayed at the bar for only a couple hours, went home and passed out until she got home from work. I was still shaking a bit. I still keep thinking of what I could have/should have done differently, but at all in all, I'm just glad I walked away in one piece. Amazing voice class tonight. Fuckin brilliant actually because I got to meet Wendee "Faye Valentine" Lee (she signed my DVD case & one of the DVDs) and shook her hand. She was very encouraging and kind. Later on met and talked with Lynnanne "new voice of Computer in Star Trek" Zager. All more or less because they were in the same building doing voice over...stuff. Also nailed down some good ideas for going forward and I can't wait to get to work on more stuff.
