Artists that just do good covers regardless of, but appropriate to the comic content are a really rare bunch and I don't know that I could come up with five of those.

Dave Johnson does consistently strong covers for a variety of books with differing tones. If I needed a go-to cover artist without knowing the content he'd be my choice.
Adam Hughes is another guy who does great covers, though he seems to be used as just a pin-up guy more than he deserves.
Chris Bachalo does good covers with occasional leaps into great covers and has a much broader range than the market he's currently working in.
Brian Bolland always does great work with a deep range.

After that you start getting into artists who are really good for a specific genre and less so for others.

There are some living artists who are effectively has-beens for comic covers. At one point in the 90s, Joe Quesada was one of the better cover artists in the business. His deflated Ghost Rider cover is still one of the best of the era. He's alive, but I don't know if he has the magic still. Dave McKean really isn't a comics guy anymore, so I don't think he could be bothered to do any cover unless Neil wrote it. Claire Wendling did amazing covers for her Lights of Amalou series, but I think she's done with comics as well. Pretty much the same situation with James Jean.

But: I really want better graphic design in my comics. There are so many instances of great art being plagued by horrible logos and barcodes (seriously, they can't throw them in the corner of the back page ad?) and it's makes me kinda sad.

I've been looking into Chip Kidd's work (Dark Knight Returns/Year One collection covers, Final Crisis) has really left me wanting more. Even if he can be a bit repetitive at times, at least it looks professional. Am I right in saying that lettering studios are usually responsible for this end of things in mainstream comics? I'm a big graphic design enthusiast/hobbyist and the vast majority of comics design (including recap/credits pages) are diabolical.
