Saw this yesterday: it's irritating that the 2D version is so hard to track down, especially given how the cinemas here charge like wounded fucking bulls for 3D sessions. Anyhow, though there are some quibbles to be had, on the whole it was a fun film and the 2 hrs fairly raced past.

I think they could and should have made better use of language than they did. A review by someone largely unfamiliar with the comic suggested that since they'd tap Branagh to direct, the Asgard scenes should have come across as more Shakespearean, which amused me given the comics have them generally speaking in a much more formal manner/meter. It's a good idea, but I can see how people might have trouble with the idea.

In which case there should have been a line/exposition that the Asgardians either are fluent in all languages or that it's a property of Bifrost that like the TARDIS it gives you the gift of speaking and understanding the language of where it takes you. A scene with the exiled Thor conversing in fluent spanish with someone, for instance.

My only other complaint is that the exile was FAR too brief. Falling for Jane and learning his Important Life Lesson takes only a couple of days, and that just isn't satisfying. There really needed to be a sense of weightiness to the exile, of the mighty and arrogant thunderer struggling to learn sorely needed humility and earning the love of the brilliant mortal into whose orbit he has been thrust. Similarly, Jane felt underutilised as a character.

That aside, I liked the way they played Loki here. He's so often the cackling villain that understatement suits him well, as does that sense of loss and rage as his identity is destroyed and he struggles to rebuild it in the only manner he knows how. I was expecting him to embrace his lost ice giant herritage, but the fact he didn't and instead sort to ground himself in the world he'd grown up in was a nice twist.

I'm a little thrown by the post credit sequence. Is Skaarsgard's character meant to be familiar to us? I mean, he clearly seems to be referring to Bruce, but why is it him that Fury shows what I presume to be the Cosmic Cube to, and why does it sound like he's been a mole in Jane's group?

Also, nice Hawkeye cameo.

The fact that there was a relationship at all was what seemed odd to me. Hardly developed at all and suddenly he's promising to return to her? And she's out looking for him? Probably to do with the timing of it all, but yeah, that part of it was off.

As to the ending, that character was being possessed by Loki, which means he is essentially a mole in Janes group (they find out that Thor is returning, Loki freaks out and tries to knock the Hulk his way??) but I think the only reason they mentioned Banner earlier on was so you get an idea for how serious SHIELD is if you haven't seen any of the other movies. And suddenly I get where you're going with the mole thing, maybe Fury just contacted him because Fury knew he'd been around crazy shit by now, and trusted him? Gah, now I'm confused, thanks!

@oldhat: Well he's there, and he fights, and uh, that's about it. Him, Volstag and the other one? And Lady Sif. They don't do much except look pretty and fight, and get saved by Thor. THe lot of them seemed more like comic relief to be honest. That or cannon fodder.

The Warriors 3 & Sif are there basically to serve as the illustration of Thor's change in attitude. Act I they get hurt and Thor's not that concerned because he's having so much fun killing giants (though one would read into it that he's covering their escape and is confident of their ability to extract themselves rather than just being a heedless jerk), Act II they get hurt and Thor's now all self-sacrificing nobility to save them

Yeah, that's true, but as characters they seemed slightly less developed than Jane's intern (who's name I can't even remember!) Not that this was a bad thing, they're there, and they're fun to watch, and as you say, they help Thor develop as a character, but it would be nice to get a bit more out of them.

WHo am I kidding? Yeah.... I'm saying it was shit. The relationship developed out of nowhere, Loki had a personality transplant halfway through, they referenced him as a "trickster" but NO ACTUAL TRICKSTERING OCCURRED, The film took place in less locations than fingers on my hand, the 3D effects were rubbish, and the whole film felt like "THE AVENGERS IS GONNA BE AWESOME.... oh shit... we forgot about Thor, what shall we do? I know let's do (insert crappy idea here that fulfils all necessary criteria for it to be passable and to set the scene for the Avengers).... yeah it looks about right, we'll do that. And there's some Ice Giants. OK get who you can and we'll go for it"....

/rant over.

Hemsworth makes for a great and very endearing Thor and there's some exciting action scenes. It won't shake up the genre, but it's an enjoyable way to spend two hours and a lot better than the putrid dross that was Wolverine, Iron Man 2 etc.

I liked it a lot. It was good fun. It does have some issues, probably related to the script, but the movie's propped up pretty well by the charm of all the characters and actors involved.

I have a 5 year old nephew who is crazy for Marvel. To give you a bit of an idea of how they look, here's Colm Feore as their king:

They don't all look exactly like that, I think the rest are a bit softer in appearance. OK, so I read plenty of Marvel comics but I actually really dislike Thor. I'm not a fan of all the Norse/Viking mythological stuff, generally speaking, and I also don't care for muscle-bound freaks, so I think that's why I don't like Thor.

Having said that, I thought the movie was pretty darn good. Here's what I didn't like:

1) I agree with previous commenters in this thread: his exile should've lasted longer. The extremely brief bonding moment with Skaarsgard's character in the bar also could've used some work.
2) There was a sense of "weightiness" to the fighting and weapons, but I never felt like anyone was ever really getting beat up due to a lack of damaged clothing/makeup. Also, the Thor/Loki fight toward the end was pretty weak...they had to cut the camera to make the action go by quicker like in Carradine's Kung Fu TV show. They were trying to fight in those crazy bulky costumes and I don't think it worked.
3) I also agree that we could've seen more of Loki's trickster side. I know his personality from the comics, but someone unfamiliar with the comics wouldn't have a good idea of that side of him.

Without saying a bunch of "me too!" stuff that other people have already mentioned, these are some things I liked:

1) There are some beautiful women in this movie and they never go out of their way to do that cliched "look at me do something sexy" thing. Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, and Jaimie Alexander are all beautiful. Also, Rene Russo isn't in the movie much but she's still got it...I might rewatch The Thomas Crown Affair now...
2) Even though Loki's trickster stuff wasn't showcased very much, I thought he was a very well-done character and Tom Hiddleston should be applauded.
3) Marvel is doing a good job tying the characters' movies together in preparation for The Avengers without it seeming like they're trying too hard. A government entity would've shown up to investigate the hammer anyway, so having it be SHIELD doesn't seem out of place.

Well, I won't drone on any more. I liked it...still could've been slightly better but it's much better than some of Marvel's other offerings like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Iron Man II.

"Good fun" is about how I'd describe it. It's competent and well done all over, and Thor himself is pretty much perfect. Likeable all the way through, and it rarely gets boring. It's good fluff, and worth the time.

Thor being so all-over charming is a bit of a problem, though. As has been mentioned here, nothing feels weighty. None of the conflicts, none of the climactic fights. It's all just going through the motions. Thor's a likeable guy all the way through, and it doesn't feel like he learns a lesson. One moment he's a likeable rowdy guy who's a little too self-confident and believes in fighting before diplomacy, then he discovers he can't take his hammer and there's a pretty girl there, and all of a sudden he's learned his lesson. Okay. That was... too easy, too short, not in movie-time, but in in-the-movie time.

And Loki! While I like his character, his motivations and actions were actually surprising and well-done, and the actor who portrays him does it well, it feels like everyone over-hyped him as a trickster and a sneaky dude when it comes to actually... being sneaky. The end fight is the best example of this. Here he's about to fight his brother, who's pretty much the most powerful dude in Asgard, and all he can pull off is shooting at him with his spear-thing and then doing the old "oh please save me, ha ha tricked you" thing? Loki's centuries old, and he resorts to freaking clichés? Dude should be pulling off freaking ninja tricks, firing from the shadows and darting away, setting traps, convincing Thor that what he's doing is good, using everything he's got! But no. Brute-force fight and "lol I'm hanging off a cliff come get me plz".

And really, Thor SHOULD feel conflicted about letting Bifrost do its thing, if all it'll do is destroy the frost-giants' world. In some movies, the destruction of an evil and sneaky and out-and-out horrible race is generally treated as a good thing. Thor has absolutely no love for these people, and they're hardly presented as anything but evil. If Thor even showed a HINT of having to consider his options, even that would improve the anticlimactic final fight.

At least Loki seems to get into it a bit more in the after-the-credits gimme, manipulating things a little from behind the scenes. He didn't seem to be possessing Skarsgård as much as simply poking him in the direction he wanted him to go.

3D effects were okay, but not worth the extra cash. In the future, 3D speshul effect people, I'd recommend that you actually BLUR the backgrounds in close-up shots, since having sharp backgrounds behind sharp actors makes it look like the backgrounds are actually painted on a wall a few feet away. Even when outside.

It seemed like a longer version of an unanimated Justice league unlimited episode. (i like the series very much but it really did feel like an episode)

Even tho Thor has has his own book for a long time the series had died and come back again with very few good writers. I've always liked him as a
secondary character in the avengers than reading him off on his own.

I'm curious how they are going to play him in the avengers movie since they are doing the run of Ultimate avengers and the running gag in that was him bragging about being a god and no one believing him.

For once they actually had a female character not be a damsel in distress the whole time! I wish they had written her better but at least she was helping him more than he helping her swooning all over the place...

Liked the little bit part with Hawkeye ;-)

unfortunately the theater i saw it in was WAY WAY dark on screen and we could not see any of the Ice Giant fights well At all. :p

The best stuff in this movie was definitely:

1. Loki. Wonderfully acted, and motivation that actually makes him sympathetic.
2. Anything with Thor transposing Asgardian/Viking customs to the modern day. Especially him happily smashing his coffee mug and asking for another.
3. Hawkeye.

As much as I liked Natalie Portman's character, it's true that she was mostly just kind of there and not doing much, although she was consistently funny when required. Better than Cameron Diaz was in Green Hornet, another recent film where the female lead is just kind of around because there's supposed to be a female lead but the writers couldn't figure out enough to do with her. I think part of the problem in Thor was that there wasn't as much time to develop her, what with splitting back and forth between what's happening in Asgard to what's happening in New Mexico.

People keep saying this, and it's like they missed the part where when Loki tells him that Odin is dead he places the blame squarely on Thor. I think the realization that his actions actually caused the death of one of his loved ones is reason enough for his new found humility and lack of abandon in battle.

And because nobody's mentioned it: Ray Stevenson's Volstagg further proves that Ray Stevenson needs to be in everything.

I enjoyed, and it was definitely worth the bucks. Very pretty characters and costumes, nice action sequences, gorgeous settings, and a pretty decent overall plot.

On the other hand, the pacing was uneven and the character and relationship developments were much, much too quick to be believable.

Heimdall fucking rocked. Damn near worth the price of the ticket just for him.

Non-spoiler about the end: what I'd envisioned was Dr. Foster being escorted into a lab by Agent Coulson. As they're walking along, he half-apologizes for taking all her stuff and says they brought her some help to reassemble it all. They're a guy working at the bench, and as she says "Hey, don't touch that" he turns around and it's Tony Stark.

Except that his Jesus moment happens AFTER he's told that Loki was just screwing around with him. Could be that's the reason why people keep forgetting about that thing, despite it possibly being a big part of why he's more humble. And you never really feel it in the movie, since you know it's a ruse. It's another one of those "makes sense in the script, less so in the movie" things, I think.

Thor - a comic book movie - directed by Kenneth 'Hamlet' Brannagh...

I'd say that, considering his directorial past, he did an alright job: enjoyable, frothy, funny and pacy - with already noted brilliant art-direction and smashing of mugs comedy - and he also managed to cram a lot of Thor history & Asgard exposition into a relatively short time.

Anyone living in London, UK & wishing to see it in 2D can do so at Cineworld West India Quay - I did, twas good as there were 4 of us in the cinema.

2D - brighter visuals and less customers making noise.

The problem with the end of the movie is that the fight with Loki paled into insignificance compared to the fight with The Destroyer. That was just one amazingly damn cool robot-thing. I mean sure, the fight was necessary to close out Loki's plot, but it just seemed anticlimactic form an action standpoint.

Other than that, the romance with what's-her-name was weak, I understood how his transition happened but didn't really buy it, and none of that mattered much when Thor smashed things hard with a big-ass hammer. Thor is a really entertaining piece of summer fluff.

I think the movie was kind of crap. I saw it in 2D because 3D freaks me out a bit, and it was annoying how they've included lots of way-beyond-unrealistic Aesgard design etc just because IT LOOKS AWESOME IN 3D DUDE when there is no reason for it being there.

But then.. The reason I can't really go to movies anymore is my overwhelming hatred of humanity and my fear of being shot if I tell them to STFU. But I'm making an effort for Thor, as me and a pal plan to see it tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll be able to rein in my more vocal misanthropy and enjoy the film without too many intrusions by teenagers, children, women, men. If I AM wounded (or indeed, killed), it'll be because I told the wrong person that I'd stab them in the gums with a screwdriver if they didn't shut up. (I tend to do this a lot. I wouldn't call it a character flaw, maybe just a foible. Or an eccentricity. At least I recognize that I'm not perfect. Yet.)

Sal Buscema? Really? I love Sturdy Sal but why's he getting any credit at all? And fuck Stan Lee. If anybody deserves credit, it's Kirby. And I would stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and YELL THAT TO THE WORLD!

And now I'm sad there's no purple dress.
