Can I just say how much I love this story?

So are they going to 'fix' Mark now? And if someone's been driven mad from knowing what they've done, how do you stop them going mad again as soon as you've restored their sanity?

I've spent the last two weeks on vacation and go back to work on Monday. My mood is vacillating between calm and relaxed and stressed out over returning to the office, damnit.

Now that we know it wasn't an accident, I've been thinking about the story as a whole a lot and I see a big correlation with WATCHMEN. WATCHMEN had twelve volumes, FREAKANGELS has six. WATCHMEN had six protagonists, FREAKANGELS has twelve. WATCHMEN was drawn on a 3-by-3 grid and is very organized; FREAKANGELS is on a 2-by-2 grid and is deceptively "simpler." WATCHMEN was an artistic achievement that elevated comic books; FREAKANGELS is doing the same for webcomics. And hopefully FREAKANGELS proves to have the same shelf life as a best seller! Both stories involve a redeemed rapist (Luke and the Comedian). Both stories involve characters who both embody and lampoon right-wing thinking (Rorschach and Kaitlyn). And now we know both stories involve idealists turned mass murderers (Ozzy and Mark).

Ah so Mark did realize it was his fault. Well... he knew it was his fault... realizing it meant, I dunno, delusion?

1. I'm listening to Dead Can Dance for the first time in a really long time and just happened to have "Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove" come on while I was reading the strip. It's a fascinating...thing. Anguish, all around. And anger and pain.

2. I keep thinking about madness. Insanity from an episode. It doesn't fit well with any mental disorder I've looked into, but then I've never looked into megalomania. However it fits beautifully, perfectly within every dimension of literary madness. In high school English several classes were devoted to insanity in Hamlet, pretty much talking about how Hamlet might or might not be off his nut. But my essay was how King Claudius was ka-ray-zee. Naturally, it depends on how you define it. But I argued that pursuing an idea beyond normal bounds, beyond what your peers would do, beyond what you were counseled, beyond the strictures of acceptable acts as determined by consensus (i.e. the law), a person demonstrates insanity. King Claudius went off the deep end and just insisted on continuing on without a single thought for alternatives or even a question to the necessity of his plans.

So Mark. The descent is beautiful, sharp, breathtaking. Excellent work. As ever, on pins and needles, waiting to see what happens next. And Paul - your rendering of Mark here is terrifying. I would not want to be in the room, even with Freakpowers. Bravo.

@razrangel: I'm not so sure it's insanity from one episode. It's insanity from a few years of living with the consequences and the guilt. There might also be some organic damage done by being the 'transfer point' that all that power was pushed thru. I commented on ep 90 that Mark seemed kind of brain-damaged; looking back that could be physical damage from the spike or an early reveal of the madness.

I dunno why one compare such totally different things. Watchmen is very, very 80s, Cold War fiction. FreakAngels is (as has oft been stated) a post-apocalyptic narrative. It seems to me (but what do know) to have roots in a fair bit of English traditions of SciFi, and it's not really a meta-narrative about super heroes, unlkess I've REALLY missed something. In a way it's very nostalgic - I get reminded of 2000 AD, which I grew up reading.

One more comparation between Watchmen and FA's? I think FA's have much more background and filosofical body in the story itself. Terrific episode; I love how everyone starts closing in on him in the last panel. Poor guy.

I'm sure someone's said this before, but I wouldn't be surprised if the resemblance between Mark and popular depictions of Jesus were intended. The word 'messianic' comes to mind.

Give me a break! No-one even knew if Jesus actually grew a beard. Or kept his hair long. Or if he shaved his head. The popular iconography of Jesus is entirely fictional. For all we kmow, Jesus could have been a black-skinned albino. For the Gospels tell us nothing about the physical appearance of Jesus (they didn't know, or didn't think it was important). The Jesus of Michelangeloìs Universal Judgement is anything like the traditional image of Jesus, pour example. To be sure, Jesus probably wasn't pale, didn't have violet eyes, and didn't wear military camouflage attire.

There is no consciously intended similarity to Jesus - as he may have been actually, or as he is popularly. There wasn't any mention of Jesus in the FA script, and I wasn't thinking of Jesus when I first drew Mark. So there.

To tell you the truth, I'm actually pretty sick of the kind of analysis that assumes that there are only (x) possible stories and every new story is really one of them. It's not the Bible, it's not Watchmen, it's not a veiled reiteration of either of them or anything else I recognise and frankly I wouldn't still be wasting my time reading it if it was. Such derivative stuff exists, sure, but you'd be drawing a long bow to say that FA is within cooee of it.

I wasn't so much saying Watchmen was rubbish, just that a) it doesn't bear re-iterating and b) even if it was a deep enough text to withstand re-use, I doubt I'd be spending time reading the same thing again with a different skin. The genre shelves of any bookshop are padded with endless blatantly derivative works, but my internal pattern recognition software jacks up every time I try to read one of them - or any other kind of fanfic for that matter.
