As for current storytellers, probably Jeff Lemire for SWEET TOOTH, Brian Wood for DMZ and Mike Carey for UNWRITTEN, mostly because of the way they combine narrative development and thematic content.

Kazuo Koike - Lone Wolf & Cub is perfect. utterly witthout fault
both hernandez brothers for involving me so deeply in the lives of their characters for so many years.
eddie campbell - lauded as an artist but for my money an even better storyteller (see Fate of the Artist for proof)
Warren's longform work is sublime - Transmet returned me to comics after a decade long absence - don't get me wrong i like his short runs but it's the others that i really dig.
Garth Ennis - i'm all about Garth at the mo cause i've just read the newest Boys collection and it was ace.
Grant Morrison - doom patrol will always be a big fave and that's only naming one of his titles that i've really dug.
