When I have my great grizzly beard of manitude, I use shampoo for the sideburns and neck, and just a little bit for the chin, particularly under the corners of my lips, where the hair tends to get snarled more. The mustache is pretty safe, as is right under the lower lip. However, be careful not to over-shampoo your beard, because then it will get very dry and nasty-feeling, both for you and your... ahem, social engagements. About twice a week is good.

Also, depending on how long and thick your beard gets, combing it is actually not a bad idea, and it doesn't even hurt that much once you get used to it. It'll keep the beard clean, removes loose hair that could come out at its own whim otherwise, and can improve the condition of the skin underneath it - one thing you'll have to get used to is not being able to wash your face in the same way, using things like anti-acne cream or wipes are more or less right out. A standard fine-tooth comb will do the trick - hairbrushes aren't really that useful, in my experience.

Sunlight is good for beard-owners, both because it will keep the skin under it healthy, and it will actually keep the beard looking nicer - I couldn't tell you why, only that my beard looks nicer, and has more interesting coloration, when I have a decent tan.

@oldhat: Next time I shave, I'll have the roomie take a picture, just for you ;)

I keep my goatee cropped pretty close. That helps a lot as far as needing to clean it regularly goes. I occasionally shampoo, but it is generally not needed.

I too shall refrain from posting topless pictures, as the presence of that many ribs in one image leads some men to a hunger for pork-flesh that rapidly decreases the available amount of bacon that the internet needs for 4chan memes.

I use head and shoulders, but even if I shampoo it twice over it still comes out flaky as a French pastry!

Much obliged for the advice, Whitechaplains.

@SilentObjector: Head and Shoulders generally works for me. Do you use just regular H&S, or Dry Scalp Care? The latter might work better for you. Also: how long is your hair generally, do you use any other sorts of hair products, and do you tend to wear a hat? Those may be contributing factors

As for beards: back in the days when I had one, I found that soaking it in the blood of my enemies and/or the innocent was more than sufficient to keep it manly and lustrous.

@SilentObjector Personally I hate H&S and any of the other products with that chemical in them (starts with Z I think), so I steer clear of all those. It's partly the smell that I can't stand, but also the scalp-burning sensation. I used Neutrogena's T/Gel for a while - can't remember if it worked, but that smelled disgusting. I'm pretty sure the T stands for Tar.

The best one I ever found was actually made by my girlfriend's old boss. It was completely organic, and the 'active ingredients' were like Manuka Honey, Orange Oil and stuff like that. She doesn't make it anymore, but when she did it was fantastic. At the moment I use a Matrix one, which doesn't dodge bullets, but does the job pretty well.

I'm a bald-on-top beard-on-face guy too, but I still shampoo what little hair I have to keep the dandruff at bay.

I'm not sure what Paprika is on about... Personally I'm waiting for Warren to come in with his advice. He is the god-emperor to us bald-on-top-beard-on-face disciples.

@Oldhat: I don't use conditioner, mostly because it tends to dry out my beard (though not my scalp hair, which seems odd, since they're both about the same consistency most of the time). I used to, back in high school when I first started growing one, but stopped right quick, as it turned my face into a brittle, dead-tree forest of corruption, rather than the lush faerie glade of subtle manliness that I prefer.

Also - getting up to shave RIGHT NOW. Heheheheheh.

Again, one of those things that I got and started to use after a few years of having a big beard and it just helps so much.

This is what my beard looks like these days, this picture is a few months old but not much has changed.

Alright, beard enthusiasts, I have a question for you.

When it comes to trimming the beard, how do you do it?

Go to a professional?
Help from significant other/housemate?
Do it yourself, with a mirror and a silent prayer to all the beards that have come before?

If you're DIY like me, (although I have gone to a professional on the rare event, it's just cheaper to DIY) how meticulous are you, and are there techniques that help with precision? Use electric or what?

Just curious mostly, having never been sure what the Hell it is that I'm doing with my beard, I just act on impulse and instinct.

 @gov:
Heavy-duty kitchen scissors, a mirror, swearing.

I've an odd problem (and I'll be interested to hear if any of you lads have the same) - my beard grows asymmetrically. The 'grain' of the bristles points to the right. I'm pretty sure this is due to me being right-handed & less-than-detailed grooming instruction from my dad. Result - if I don't trim at least once a month, I have this right-handed sprouting happen!

I switch between DIY and professional after each encounter with the other. Nervous about making a mess myself but know how I want it; whereas the professional will (usually) do a decent job but never quite trim it how I want it. The obvious answer is for me to become a professional but, unless Whitechapel volunteers for me to experiment/train on, that ain't likely.

I received one of those beard trimmers last xmas but know I'll end up clean-shaven if I let rip with it. Just need to get my loins girded and practise practise practise, I guess. There should definitely be college or night school courses offered for it.

Edit @ Cat Vincent: You're not alone. The left side of mine curves/curls to follow to shape of my jaw & chin but the right side goes to the left, too, which ends up making me look permanently windswept. However, I've found that the longer you let it grow, the weight seems to keep it better under control and straighter. Or just so bloody bulky I can't see its partisan swirl.

I use a single-bladed, two-edged safety razor (with "Wilkinson sword" blades). I find the blades are heavier (they're more like razor blades than like strips of thin foil) and last longer (weeks) than disposable multi-blade things; and that the experience is more akin to cutting or shaving off the stubble than to scraping it off. I shave with soap; after a shower.

For a description of how to use a safety razor, see for example How To Shave Like Your Grandpa. That site also has Shave Like Your Great Grandpa, about using a straight razor (which I've never tried), instead of a safety razor.

If we're getting into shaving instead of beardiness: Straight razor user here. Sandalwood shaving soap from Crabtree & Evelyn. Cycle through one of three antique razors (I have a fourth that I'm restoring, but I haven't had the time to try and get the corrosion off lately).

Came to straight razor from electric and I will never ever go back to electric. I would always get ingrown hairs a week or so after an electric shave, but I don't get them at all with the straight. I still haven't mastered it, though. There are a couple of spots on my face that basically impossible for me to get completely smooth (just under the jaw on the right side, and right where the beard starts at the midpoint of my throat being the big ones) because I have a funky facial hair growth pattern (the grain goes down on the left side, to the right on my throat, and up on the right side).

[Dear fuck. I can feel my beard's contempt for me sitting through the Eurovision voting]

@ Sizer: Only ever found one barber who was willing to give a "proper, old fashioned shave" so had to experience it. Unfortunately, they used the type of (so-called) cut-throat which you have to split in half one of those double-edged razor blades I think Fan was referring to and slide it into a slot. Not the best shave I've ever had; they used canned foam and didn't even offer any of the post-shave hot towels malarky. There's a place in Manchester city centre which offers all kinds of male grooming but, last time I looked (years ago), their "traditional shave" cost the best part of 25 British quids (about 40 bucks, US), so they can go take a running jump.

I'm occasionally tempted to buy one and try to do it myself but, with my attention span, it'd only end in tears. Being washed away by arterial spray.

One day, though, it will happen.

Back when I lived in Chicago, I stumbled upon a neighborhood barber shop on Milwaukee Ave a little south of Logan Square. I walked into this very old fashioned barber shop, Sinatra was on the record player, and this little old Italian guy told me to have a seat. He charged about $8 a haircut. Then he told me, while I wait, to have a free glass of homemade wine. Bad. Ass. Then I got a great haircut, and a surprise straight razor shave. I didn't know what was coming until that blade was on my neck. Still, the best (and cheapest) haircut I've had in years. I've never found a place quite like it ever since I left Chicago.

 Oda: Thank you kindly.

I shave before showering, because even though it's ass-backwards, I prefer to be totally fucking clean when I'm outta the shower. I don't want any lingering hairs, etc. I used to shave my body from groin-to-gullet, including my half-sleeve. I stopped once I got a different lover/partner and I realised I was going through too many damn razors. I shave with and against the grain. I prefer a totally clean skin, no stubble whatsoever. Not quite OCD about it, but could be if I let it run rampant in my head.

For the first time I've I'm actually attempting to grow a long/big beard (my girlfriend actually suggested it, which was more than enough reason for me to try it out). So, my question fellow beardies: moustache - trim it, or grow it and comb it to the side?

I'm going for the latter in the hope that I may one day be able to twirl it, but I thought I'd get some feedback while this thread is still alive and kicking.

I am a first time beard owner (or does it own me now?) and so the grooming and maintenance techniques discussed here have been fodder for somewhat-less-than-scientific testing. Tried shampoo for a week, felt like a sissy. Going back to lavender scented Doc Bronners apocalypse soap. The peppermint version burns my genitals. I may break down and purchase some nice stinky Neem and Camphor oil for summertime but that will be the full extent that I am willing to go for vanity. My beard is a breakdown of vanity not an excuse to indulge it. Conditioner will never touch my wispy facial appendage.

@Dispophoto, I said it once before but bears repeating: those chops are EPIC. Wolverine cries himself to sleep at night.

I have the unfortunate tendencies to both dandruff of the beard (beardruff?) and my facebits getting ginger the more i'm in the sun. I now gauge when it's summer by when i'm first asked if i dye my beard.

Strangely, for a shave-dodger, i manage to always do a better job of it than my bald-faced brother. Maybe it's just covering less ground, but i need to show him how to do it right some day. Anyway, stuff which i put on my face (in the context of grooming) : Wash with the same soap i use on the rest of me in the shower, Head And Shoulders run-off from hair. When at a mirror and trimming things in, King of Shaves low-foam Tea Tree and Aloe Vera Shave Gel, shave with a King of Shaves Azor, then Simple for men Aftershave balm from the Pound Store. Only do the cheeks and underbeard, though, when i shave entirely i don't look right and it freaks me out for days. Rather than let it grow to the beastly lengths it reached after two weeks in Serbia, Argos very cheapest hair clippers keep it a reasonable 10mm all over.

And yes, that is a painting of me as Banzuki Brian over my shoulder.

Never quite turns out even. He is pretty hemophobic, and is even a little afraid of cutting himself w/ the electric razor.

If you guys got some suggestions, cool. If not, I'll just sit back and keep watching this wonderful fetishization of beardliness.

 My advice?
Use a straight. I know I sound like an evangelist for it, but it really makes the difference.
Even if you don't:
Learn your face. The bristles go different directions, so you have to make sure you are going in the right direction. The neck, around the Adam's apple can be real problem for a lot of blokes as the bristles there tend to go in swirls,. All sorts of ways.
Make sure your face is warm before you start. If you shave after a bathh or shower the steam will make the shave easier.
Rinse with cold water, and get an erasmic stick in case you do cut youself.

Straights are awesome, I agree--but there is a sharp learning curve, it takes a long time if you want to do it properly (until you're really practiced), and the possibility of cutting yourself is off the charts (again, until you're practiced). Conversely, it's really hard (for me at least) to cut yourself on those four-blade things, but there's a higher chance of irritation afterward.

Since I only shave once a week, I don't mind the extra time a straight razor requires. I would recommend, however, that you start with a single-blade safety razor, whose learning curve is steep but not as much as a straight. They're fairly cheap and you can use that to figure out how meticulous you want to be about your shaving.

Pamper your face! It feels good. It's the male version of one of those cucumber-eye face mask things.

Yeah. I think the thing with a straight is getting over the nerves of holding an exposed blade to your neck. I found the opposite when I started. I was too cautious and left patches unshaved, rather than cutting myself to ribbons. You do need to make time to shave with one properly, but that isn't a bad thing in this day and age.

What straight do you use?

 @lampcommander
Cost wise I look at it like this. A pack of eight Mach 3 blades costs £11.99. For the price of ten packs you can get a Dovo
http://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/shaving/dovo-of-solingen/dovo-straight-razor-415815.php
or thiers-issard
http://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/shaving/straight-razors/thiers-issard-le-dandy-straight-razor.php
Either of which will last you a lifetime. Beyond the investment you aren't then throwing high quality steel blades in plastic cases into land fill. Help the environment, have a high quality shave, own a piece of cool grooming kit.

Well, I spent 3 weeks going from clean shaven to none shaving and managed to amass around about the same amount of facial hair most of you seem to notice you've gained after an impromptu afternoon nap. I give up, and am going to do drag instead of trying to prove how masculine I am.

A thread that is both hilarious and informative. I like.

I've wanted to grow a beard since I was 17, unfortunately due to my genes, I had to keep waiting. My facial never seemed to fill in, the best I could get for the longest time was random patches on my face. Nowhere near enough to make a beard, so I kept waiting and waiting..
Switch to a few months ago, and I finally felt like I had enough hair to make a go. All I've managed to grow so far is this weird Beard-tee or Go-teard. Whats more its still needs a lot of filling in, and to my surprise subtle streaks of grey white hair. Weird.

Of course now that I have a semblance of a beard, I find myself growing bald, my entire body is systematically being covered with hair like a California fire during a dry spell, and I'm fining patches of hair in places no hair should be.

Yes, ladies. I am single. Shocking, I know:)

Also, Im having trouble trimming my go-teard specifically, keeping the goatee's left and right side symetrical. Any trimming tips from the pros?

Also, any recommendations for trimmers. The one Im using is already inadequate. I need something that trims consistently even, and preferably with adjustable settings.

honestly, with a goatee, best way in my experience to keep it straight is to ditch the trimmer, grab a pair of barber's scissors and a comb, and do it by hand. trim less than you think you need to. for the edges of it, use your razor, take your time, and make a couple of passes instead of trying to get it perfect on the first swipe.
