@SilentObjector Personally I hate H&S and any of the other products with that chemical in them (starts with Z I think), so I steer clear of all those. It's partly the smell that I can't stand, but also the scalp-burning sensation. I used Neutrogena's T/Gel for a while - can't remember if it worked, but that smelled disgusting. I'm pretty sure the T stands for Tar.

The best one I ever found was actually made by my girlfriend's old boss. It was completely organic, and the 'active ingredients' were like Manuka Honey, Orange Oil and stuff like that. She doesn't make it anymore, but when she did it was fantastic. At the moment I use a Matrix one, which doesn't dodge bullets, but does the job pretty well.

I'm a bald-on-top beard-on-face guy too, but I still shampoo what little hair I have to keep the dandruff at bay.

I'm not sure what Paprika is on about... Personally I'm waiting for Warren to come in with his advice. He is the god-emperor to us bald-on-top-beard-on-face disciples.

@ Corey: or "upside-down head" as my sister commented to my bald-on-top/beard-on-faced great uncle when she was a kid.

@ Hey Apathy!: No, no Mighty Foamhead pics. If only to protect all your innocent eyes because it'd inadvertently kick-off the "topless beard-shampooing picture thread" some people seem to be encouraging.

[sneaks over to the Draw Each Other thread to post a pic in the hope one of WC's over-talented artistic basta geniuses can innocently lather-up.]

oh the fookwit metamorphosis! shit me giggles here comes the cat again & just woke up the housemates, not sure of their techniques but at least two of them have beards ...

Shampoo? Hell no. I just wipe mine down with a chamois and some Mr Sheen. But then, I knitted my own out of teak, so YMMV.

I keep the hair on top fairly short, but I have a big, thick & burly beard-stache going on, and so far, I've had luck using Old Spice's Shampoo/Bodywash combo. I just lather up my entire face, head & neck and that seems to do the trick. But then again, I've been an Old Spice man since I started shaving at the age of twelve. It's just family tradition.

Please let this become a topless beard-shampooing picture thread.

    YYEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

edit: It doesn't have to be topless. As long as it's beard shampooing.

Also, Oldhat, you should follow the Tumblr named http://dudeswithbeardseatingcupcakes.tumblr.com !

I use shower gel, though admittedly this might not be the best thing for it as my beard is wiry as hell. Still, the girlfriend doesn't complain, and she's usually pretty quick to let me know about any perceived grooming issues.

Beard shampooing is not something one really does with a shirt on.

Ahem, staying away from the topless shampooing drift. (Nuh-uh, no way, you would all be struck blind, and I'm not sure my wife would approve...)

    I shampoo my beard.

You guys, Oda, Dork and I are really unimpressed with the lack of pictures here. Jeez.

As an actual question, though. Do you fellas use conditioner? Scented? Non-scented?

I have not used shampoo for 16 years. My head is kept to closely trimmed stubble, and the goatee is closely trimmed. So soap.

@Oldhat: I don't use conditioner, mostly because it tends to dry out my beard (though not my scalp hair, which seems odd, since they're both about the same consistency most of the time). I used to, back in high school when I first started growing one, but stopped right quick, as it turned my face into a brittle, dead-tree forest of corruption, rather than the lush faerie glade of subtle manliness that I prefer.

Also - getting up to shave RIGHT NOW. Heheheheheh.

im a lumberjack by God and I live in Seattle where we use chainsaws to trim em and whiskey to rinse em out. Never heard of beardruff.....sounds bad.
Took two inches off my face pelt last night, now I wish I wouldve snapped a shot. Next time then, ladies.

When mine gets bushy, theres nothing like lathering a thick head of old school Irish Spring into it and combing it out in the shower.....really.
    feels almost majestic.

HOORAY!!! I was turned on AND I learned about cleaning and maintaining beards!

this is the way i feel about beards. never usually make it past the itchy stage.
saturday morning breakfast cereal on beards
  6.  (9849.38)
I've been shaving my head since about 1985, but have only had the goatee since I learned to ignore my mother's complaints that it makes me look like a criminal. I find shampoo and conditioner twice a week are enough to keep the facial hair clean and soft, and daily combing keeps it neat and free of crumbs.

(and ladies, I'm middle aged, six foot and 245 pounds - you don't need to see me with my shirt off)

Very nice. With a wink to Old Hat and Oda I give you the winter beard... now appearing well into spring.
(and losing popularity at home faster than the trees are turning green...)
Sorry to dissapoint on the topless... but now that we've kicked things off you never know.

Personally I prefer to shampoo occasionally, just using whatever stuff is in the shower.
If its in an extra long phase (currently) I will even go so far as to condition... makes it nice and soft.

Well, my shirt is still on, and there is a lack of shampoo, but I did finally getting around to trimming my beard so it doesn't look like quite so scraggly anymore. Part of the reason I finally got around to this was inspiration from this thread, but the other part is that today is the first day of my last class (hopefully ever). A class, I might add, that is about Vampires.
