Hey guys,

I've decided that I want to put together a compilation of super short stories on a topic that I like to write about: people who are out of place. I'm looking for submissions of 1000 words or less on the topic by June 30th. The details that I've worked out so far are available at my blog for now. I'll try to update the website with any changes that I make to the rules/details.

Anyone else wanting to submit, there are six days remaining. If you do submit a piece, please include a bio for yourself of around 200 words. It's something I forgot to mention before, but I'd really like to be able to give all the authors their own little "about" section.

I was thinking that I might put all of the 10 word entries on the back cover, not sure about that idea yet. And just to reiterate, today is the final day for submissions. I've received eight so far and I think I have a couple more coming today. I may extend the deadline a couple of weeks if there is any interest. Glad you asked and sorry about the delay in response. As of right now, I'm just about done with initial edits on the stories (just little grammatical stuff here and there). I still want to write one or two more of these myself, so if anyone is interested in sending another story, feel free, I can still include them. By next Sunday I want to be ready to start laying it out into it's final form. That'll probably take me about a week or so. After that we're technically ready to publish.

If anyone has any cover ideas they'd like to contribute, I'd love to see them. I refuse to put a generic cover on this book. Failing getting submissions, I have a few ideas for photos that might work as a cover.

These are the parameters I sent to Yskaya, if anyone else is interested.

The cover is going to be for a 6x9 book through Lulu. As far as I know, that's the size that the image will be. I'm not really sure how one deals with bleeds and trims and things like that. The following site is kind of a walkthrough on how to develop a cover for this size of book: http://www.athleticaid.com/yaquinapress/CoverExamples.html, if you're interested. I read through it once and was slightly dumbfounded.

Anywho, the text on the cover should be "Out of Place, Out of Time: An Odd Collection of Short Stories"

The deadline is not a set in stone thing, but I should be coming to the end of doing the book layout a couple of weeks from now. Let's say August 15th.

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd update you on the progress with this.

As of right now, we've got 30 stories: 12 by me and 18 by the rest of you beautiful bastards. I think I'm going to do five more, I have ideas for three. Those should be done within a week or two.

I've also read all of your stories and they're fantastic. If I had anything I was slightly confused about, I contacted you and you got back to me. I've done the initial edits on all of them, which isn't to say I'm completely done editing, but I think I've gotten the hard part out of the way.

I've started doing the layout of the book, how I'm doing it is this:
1) Laying everything out in Word, getting font sizes and types uniform, setting up spacing, writing up a table of contents, getting the page numbers right, including all author bios, writing a copyright page, and a bunch of other little stuff that is always a pain, but ya know...I asked for it.
2) Converting everything to PDF and uploading to Lulu's site.
3) Uploading the cover.
4) Book!

I'm going to make this available in 6x9 paperback and ebook. Is anyone interested in any other formats?

I had some ideas but I threw them out because they were specific to a couple of stories and I didn't want to give service to any certain part of the book. Really I'd just like something that captures the overall feeling of being out of place...that's pretty much the only requirement I have right now content wise. Just let your friend know that it has to look ok on a 6x9 page.

I'm not up to scratch with my art so i will have to keep it simple.Would that be ok?Probably better if someone designed something classy on here so i could just print them out at work.That sounds a better option.

Has the book got a intro?I know little about legal issues but a few words from someone recognised in the community would help it sell.Just my opinion.

@Flecky - The flyers are a great idea, though I'm horrible with art too. Anyone want to have a go at designing something? We should probably leave off that until I get all the online purchasing info so we can throw that on there too. Should be mid to late next week everything gets uploaded to the sites (that is Lulu and Amazon for the Kindle).

In terms of the intro, I wrote a short one that's in there. Not sure if we have time/what the interest would be for someone established in the writing community to write something, though I'm thinking about doing a follow up book in the future, so perhaps if this one does alright, we'll get something like that next time.

Thanks for the input, I'm always looking for new ideas and ways to get this stuff out to the people. I'll update everyone more on this as publishing time draws nearer.

Is this the first time a project like this has been undertaken; a compilation from the minds of people from Whitechapel? It's easy for me to say, as I was happy to buy a copy, yet I feel we should all give it as much support as possible so more can come out; a few quid is a small price to pay when you think about what it could mean for all the writers on this site.

I guess what I'm trying to say is we owe it to ourselves. It takes me back to all the old "pulp"sci-fi etc short story compilations that once was a thriving medium e.g NEW WORLDS in which authors like Moorcock used to serialize their works.

Yeah,things have changed, especially with the internet, but I love those old books and what they represented.

I will be ordering mine on pay day (Wednesday) and can't wait, this looks really nice and it's been a while since I delved into an anthology, so should be fun. Also, when it comes around to the next one in a few months I should have a few things to submit for consideration seeing as last week, inspired by Budgie's fast-fic approach, I've committed myself to producing a new short story between 750 - 1000 words each week.

Vornaskotti -- Yeah, I know. Depending on a few things, the illustrations can make it a lot harder. I'm currently working on a project where the guys grandfather did illustrations for a book and he wants it on his Kindle. If it's at the beginning or end of a chapter, then it's not an issue. It's when (as is the case with most of them) they're in the middle somewhere, then the spacing doesn't work unless you have the font and everything on your Kindle set to a certain size. Because it's just for him, it's okay. I'm doing it based on his viewing preference. But then I'm also having an issue with it as he wants some of the illustrations that only take up half a page to be at the bottom of the page.
But yeah, Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard. Small illustrations that would be used as bit pieces at the beginning of the stories or something right at the end would be (I think) fairly easy. Having pictures throughout the stories would be awkward looking.

Plus, I think Amazon charges more depending on the size of the file... but I could be remembering something different.

I've done some e-book conversions to both ePub and Mobipocket (ie. Kindle) and yeah, you can use pictures but you'll have to more or less make them a chapter of their own, so that they'll basically take one page. Pics between stories would work, but pics interspersed in stories looks clunky because of the text flow, and because of the oh-so-varied way most e-readers still render the code. We are really now in the same position where web developers were 10 years ago - a book can look completely different depending on the reader you are using (either a device or an app on iPad, for example...)

After I had sent Steve the basic layout to make sure it was how he wanted it he asked me to move a sentence up 5 or 6 lines (on the page with all the legal text, not anything in the stories) so that it was on the same page as everything else. I was confused 'cause it looked fine on mine, but whatever, I figured he used a larger font then I do (I have it set about as small as it can be). It wasn't until later that I realized that he was using the Kindle app on his computer to look at it.
I'll have to remember things like that for future formatting that I do.

Steve -- I'd be willing to do the lay-outs every time. However, I probably wouldn't have the time required to spell check / edit the stories. Well... that's not quite true... I guess it would depend on how quickly the turn around time would be and how many stories people would want to put in each release.
(Making the quotation marks, double hyphens, etc. consistent wouldn't be a problem, neither would the lay-out.)

Alan -- It's pretty easy to do. E-mail me if you want me to go over a few things with you.

Max -- Really, really poorly. In order to read the text you would probably be limited to 2, if not 1, panel per page. To give you a decent idea about viewing something like that: When I have to review a PDF on my Kindle I have to set it so that it's landscaped (which let's me see the top half of the page) and even then, it's a pretty big eye strain. If you were to take Freakangels and enter each panel as a separate page it wouldn't be too bad...
Damn... now I have to try that... Not tonight, mind you... but maybe tomorrow...

E-book formatting deals really badly with anything apart from flowing text, if we talk about e-books as in ePub/Mobipocket style Kindle books. You can think of it as a website that's forcefully chopped into pages, and people can be reading it on anything from a smartphone to computer screen.

For releasing comics the warez-format cbz is the best, it's basically images of the pages. That's how we released the Iron Sky comic.

I'm familiar with the cbz/cbr formats. It's a shame that the ebooks formats are so focused on being books. The idea of including interstitial art in a book naturally made me think of the combination of the two forms of ideas (ie. comics).

So here's an idea I was thinking about. We take the Whitechapel Quarterly idea and get four editors to do books that each have a solid format every year. For instance, Out of Place, Out of Time would come out at the beginning of the year (was actually thinking right before Xmas for next year's edition). Then the next book would come out in March or so and be stories on whatever that editor wanted to do. Then June or July. Then October or so. Each of the books would recur every year around the same time. This way, each editor gets stories based on whatever they want to do their book about and they have a whole year to get submissions/prep/layout/covers/etc...

What do you guys think? Is there interest from three other people for editing? Could we fill four books a year? Any ideas for topics for the other three?

But that's what e-readers are for.
If you want to read a magazine, comic, etc, then get a tablet. I love having a Kindle because I wanted something to read books on. I have no interest in trying to read comics, newspapers, magazines, or websites on it.

The theme: Travel, transition, changes, all in media res. No origins, no destinations, just the journey, just mile markers.

In order to get all I could out of the Kindle version I had to make it the only e-version available for 3 months (I believe... will double check that tomorrow night when I finally get home). I wasn't sure what the market for a Lulu epub version was/if it was needed so I figured I'd let it go into the Kindle lending library for a couple of months (sorry if that messed ya up). Everyone, I'm sorry I've been a bit slow and absent in all this. I've got a bit of a sickness, and with that sickness comes mind-altering drugs (okay, okay, just amox and robitussin), so I haven't been keeping up as much or as quick as I should be. Please bear with me, folks!

In the meantime, I've done this:

Travel, simply defined, is motion with purpose. It is directed, intentional change (though not always directed or intended by the one who is changed), and it is perhaps the greatest force for growth and understanding that humans have access to.

It should surprise no one, then, that the oldest, the greatest, and the most stories all share the theme of travel. The hero goes somewhere they've never been before, and they are affected by this new place, even as their actions change the land they have visited. Maybe our hero has intentionally set out to discover a new world, or perhaps they were dragged there by fate. Perhaps they come to make their destination their new home, or maybe they will return to where they began, though because they have already been changed by their journey, going “home” is nothing of the sort – when you change, the world changes with you. Even the place you started from has become just another destination.

Means of travel are considered important, perhaps even holy, by almost all cultures. Nearly every faith has a god, spirit, or patron saint of travel and travelers, from the Catholics' Saint Christopher (who is often illustrated as carrying young, weak, or endangered travelers on his shoulders) to the Vodoun loa Papa Legba (who, like all loa, may occasionally “ride” priests or other hosts, who are called a name which translates roughly into English as “horse”). Speaking of horses, while it's perhaps not a universal rule, I suspect most ranchers are far more connected to and, appreciative of, their horses than they are of their cattle, even if the animals are for milk rather than beef. In many cultures, crossroads are said to have spiritual or supernatural significance, and why not: they are probably the best physical manifestation of the concept of choice. Which occupation is more romantic, a salesman who works in a store, or a salesman who work out of their car?

The words “journey,” “travel,” “quest,” “road,” and “map” show up in the titles of all kinds of stories. Homer's The Odyssey, which originally just meant “the story of Odysseus” (or maybe “the journey of Odysseus"), has become a word which means “a long journey.” Equally as important and pervasive as Homer's epics are to Western literature is the “Journey to the West,” one of the cornerstones of Asian storytelling. This fascination isn't confined to the ancients, either: just ask anyone who identifies as a “Trekkie.”

We use travel metaphors all the time in our everyday language. Experiencing hard times is like “going through hell,” and if you're willing to endure such hardships for a greater cause, you might go “through hell and back” for it. If you are unable to find a new job, partner, or emotional state, you might say you are “stuck,” incapable of motion, either forward or backward. I've been asked “where are you at with this?” in reference to some project or assignment – have you completed your journey, or are you “stuck” ? Of course, one way to answer this question is with the noncommittal, yet strangely profound, answer: “I'm getting there.”

Getting There is a collection of super-short stories disparate in their characters, moods, and styles, yet tied together by the theme of travel. As previously stated, this is a pretty wide theme. There are a lot of journeys in this book.

Anyone had an idea for the next Quarterly? Nothing has come to my mind yet and I'm not sure I'm ready to be in charge just now, maybe in a few months time if something else I'm working on comes off I will be.

I'm not in a position to lead on something but an idea did occur to me for a theme. One of the real entertaining sights on Whitechapel is the creative abuse develops in the spam threads. How about a Quarterly based on this; on the spambots, inspired by their outpourings, reactions to their posts, explorations of the shadow psychosis of the spambots themselves.

In the spam I've received by email my two favourites have been
Cockzilla is the Word, and
Crocodile Fanny.
Both sound like they've come out of the consensus reality of this place.

a) Hoping that Anchorbeard (which I first typed as Anchorbear, which is also good) got my story. I haven't had an email back, but I'm sure he's just busy.
b) Would also love to be involved in an volume of responses to spam, would let me experiment some more with cut-ups and similar, which is always fun. A thought though - perhaps the theme could be more generally related to 'the internet' with more traditional stories as well as the creative responses to spam and bots. I just think the cryptic nonsense could get tiring for the reader if that's all there is.
c) I would love to offer to edit the volume, but I too am working 2 jobs currently, doing my own writing, etc and whilst I might be settled in the UK currently, come August I'm back to jetsetting.

I recently had to proof read a short story that was nothing but fake spam emails.
It gave me a headache - misspellings, more spaces between some words than others, occasional capitalisation.
And in the end I found the tale a nothing because it merely played with the idea instead of using it narratively.

I saw how it could have been done, so there's definite scope there. Just be prepared, stories written like true spam are painful on the eyes, an entire book full might be too much to cope with.
Having said that, if someone decides they want to do it, I'm sure I will submit.

Hey folks...

If you'd like to imagine me holding my hat and awkwardly turning it over and over while I say this, you won't be far off the mark. The short version is, between moving into a new apartment, work at my job getting significantly more intense than I thought it would, and a few personal issues, I have not been able to put the work into putting together this anthology that it, and its fantastic writers, deserve. I haven't even been able to write my own story for the anthology. I was hoping that, now that I'm more or less moved into my new place, I'd have more time to work on Getting There, but I'm not sure that's actually going to be the case.

However, I don't want this thing to fade away. Frankly, the stories are just too damn good, and you guys deserve for them to see the light of day.

With that said, I would like to step down as editor for this go-around, and hand the reigns over to someone who can really get this thing done. I will transfer all the email information to whoever would like the job, including the compilation as it currently exists. Things just don't seem like they're going to break enough to give me the time to work on this, but that's no reason the anthology has to die.

I am really, genuinely sorry, everyone. I wish I could have gotten this thing together and sent it out by now. Things got strange and tight and wrong on my end of things almost immediately after Getting There really got rolling, but I know that's not the best excuse. I'm sorry to keep everyone waiting and wondering on this.

Okay, I have a question that might seem kind of goofy...
What is the editor supposed to do? Simply read the stories and check for spelling / grammar mistakes? Talk back and forth with the writers to make the stories better? Some other things that I can't think of?

Because, depending on what's required, I'd step up and give it a shot.
(But it depends on what people are expecting.)

@Warped - Spelling/Grammar mistakes are a semi large part of taking the reigns. What I pretty much told people when I got their stories for OOP,OOT was that when they submitted to me, I might make minor grammatical/typo changes, but they were largly responsible for their own stories. There were a few people who I got back to if I was thinking about changing something that affected their plot, but otherwise I left almost everything as it came to me, content-wise. How you want to approach that really depends on you, but I believe the stories sent in so far were expected to be rough drafts.

The rest of the process is combining everything into book form, finding a cover, doing the layout, doing the marketing, making sure the authors know what's going on, and pretty much anything else you can think of that could conceivably make the book a better realized product... now that I type it out like that it seems like quite a bit. Don't let that discourage you, when I did it it wasn't so bad, and there are lots of helpful, friendly people around here (as you know--because you are one of them).

Okay, so now I'm going to be dumb... I'm willing to do it.

BUT! I need someone to help with finding the cover and getting the word out there.
I'm terrible at advertising / setting up websites (either a site on it's own or a facebook type thing). When it really comes down to it, I'm not on the 'net a whole lot and, as people have probably noticed, I don't participate in a whole lot of discussions. (I've been trying to more often, but it's a struggle.)

Now that I think about it though... we should set up a "Whitechapel Quarterly" page instead of a separate page for each edition... Maybe we can eventually convert what was set up for OOP, OOT. (Which I like pronouncing as it looks as opposed to what it stands for.)

1st thing's 1st. We need a better image for the FB page. The one I threw up there is just a placeholder obviously.

We also need (hopefully) a couple of people who are willing to post updates on the site from time to time. The biggest part of growing the book is going to be a continuous flow of information. We can't let that site get stagnant. Once the book is about ready to be released we're gonna have to hit the ground running with posting on there and getting the word out.

If anyone has any ideas for changes to the site, let me know. Also, if anyone wants to step up and help me administrate it, that would be a huge help too. Let me know, folks.

There's currently 9 stories, ranging from 4-6 pages on a Kindle (smallest font setting, sans serif, smallest font setting, most words per line).
Compared to OOP, OOT which had 30-something stories but I think they were 2-3 pages each. It's on Amazon for $2.99

My understanding was that we were just putting this up on Amazon to be sold for the Kindle.

To be honest, I'd love to have a physical copy of the book, but that would require a larger effort, and I'm not sure that you really want to spend that amount of time getting it out. Do you think we should take stock of what types of formats people want to see on this? I'd be willing to help out on a physical copy if you decide to do one, Neil.

In terms of pricing, I believe I was pretty locked into selling them for $2.99, though I may be misremembering... Or the way the pricing works on these could be different at this point. Either way, Amazon lets self-published books into the lending library for free (even though the publisher [that being me in the case of OOP, OOT and Neil in this case] does get a cut for any books that are borrowed). They also had a deal where you could offer the book for free for a week, whenever you wanted, and the publisher would also get a cut for that.

Again, I'm not sure if they still operate this way.

Okay, once again, sorry about how long this is taking. I need opinions from everyone that has made a contribution to "Getting There".
How do you guys want it published? As a physical book? Just on Amazon? (If on Amazon, how much should it be?)

I haven't heard back from everyone about the edits, I think I'm going to e-mail all of them again at one time so that as I get answers back I'll finalize the edits and save them in a separate folder. (I think I only heard back from one of you, actually...)

I was trying to give it this look like an old '60's era map I saw of a pass through the Rocky Mountains when I was a little kid. Obviously, I'll spruce it up and add in all the other names, but how does this work as a basic concept?

In terms of how it's published, I can access it either way, but having a physical copy available would be cool. Also, the problem with doing it through Amazon is that you are not allowed to release it in other e-formats for some pre-determined amount of time (which I forget right now). Let me know if you want some assistance laying out a physical version.

Currently we are looking at the cover design by Alan Tyson, I'm going through the stories again and wondering where all of my edits went, and I'll be sending them all out again as I didn't get them all back from people and can't seem to find the ones that I did get back.

I don't know. I've had too much stuff going on that I'm not willing to get into, I've been unable to edit the stories in any way in which I would consider complete.
I also can't figure out a decent way of putting out a physical copy. It's too small for a book, magazine doesn't seem right to me.

I need help with this. If anyone wants to step up, I'll send you the originals from the authors along with the edits I've come up with so far. Once the edits are complete, I can promise you that I can get an e-book version within a couple of hours of me being home and receiving the final edits.

Magcloud may be an option if someone wants to step up to plate to put this together. I'm pretty familar with magcloud (for a print option) so could help on that end, but I'm no editor, and have no skills in that direction.
