It's been a while since we last discussed what we've been playing, and there's a lot of really good shit out there. What have you been up to? Mark your spoilers, or may the sword of God's righteousness strike ye down.

I played the single-player campaign of Portal 2, and found it to be exactly what I wanted. It was challenging, but never ball-busting, funny but never jokey. It was one of the most balanced games I've played in years.

I'm on LA Noire right now, and again, it's an astonishing achievement. The technology they came up with to render performances is amazing, and the stories are tight, satisfying, and in some cases, shocking.

I also had a taste of D&D: Daggerfall and Halo: Reach. Daggerfall is buggy as hell; I got stuck behind a dwarf at one point. Be warned if you download the full game.

On the RPG front, my Skype group is still kicking Githyanki ass every Wednesday night. I play a Level 14 Fighter/Warlord.

NOW YOOOOOU

That wall being cheese and the need to defend against it.

Started an EVE trial last night and am enjoying it so far. @Fauxhammer - Thanks for starting this back up.

@oldhat - I'm always playing hand-me-donw or older games. I can never rationalize paying full price with the budget I have to work with.

My D&D group went on hiatus for the summer, so I'll be pen & paper RPG-less for a few months. I'll probably break out the Gamma World game and run that for some folks for my fix.

I just played through the Bulletstorm campaign (I'm not a big multiplayer fan) on the Xbox and it was decent. Best thing about it was the dialog. Delightfully foul mouthed characters. I borrowed it and Too Human from a friend, so that's next.

I am still playing Minecraft, just not nearly as much as I used to. I started playing Lord of the Rings Online with a few friends but haven't logged on in weeks.

Drop7 and Archmage are my go-to games on my phone.

L.A.Noire is an outstanding piece of work. The more I play it the more the flaws it does have tend to stand out, but it's so refreshing to have proper adult writing in a game (albiet a little cliché in places) that I don't mind that it's a little bit too trial and error and has action scenes that feel a bit tacked on. It's a very important game for the industry really, not just from a technical point of view but because it shows that this kind of title can sell, and sell well. It did take them something like 7 years to do it though.

Workwise it's E3 coming up in just over a week, which means all sorts of pain for those who make games for a living followed by lots of shiny new things being unveiled. Best and worst part of the year for me really.

Duke Nukem Forever is out in a fortnight. That's been in development for longer than I've been a games coder, and I start my 13th year as one this July...

I recently finished playing the entire assassins creed trilogy (I was pretty late to that party) and I have *almost* got out of the habit of talking in a bad italian accent now. It's been tough. I don't really have anything to take it's immersive place though. Suggestions? I do really want to play LA Noire...

Portal 2 was amazing of course. Finished the co-op campaign in a weekend (has anyone heard of any DLC coming out for this?) and the single player campaign not long after that. Gods it's good. So unlike anything else. I'm not sure how much replay value it has but it beats another bloody FPS any day of the week.

I forgot about E3! I'm hoping for Mass Effect 3 announcements. I'm caught in a neverending loop between being so excited about that game that I need to calm myself with information about it and not wanting to hear too much so that my experience will be relatively spoiler free. It's a difficult balance to strike.

Let's see... Portal 2, I played when it came out. Haven't coordinated with any of my friends yet to get a co-op game going. Wonderful game, in all respects. Still need to finish my commentary playthrough.

The recurring favorite of mine: Dwarf Fortress. I'm taking a bit of a break just because I want a handful of modifications to the game to play my ideal fort and it's a somewhat tedious task to implement all those modifications. (For fellow players: My idea is to remove the maximum age from dwarfs, as well as skill/attribute rust, so that any dwarf who doesn't starve, die of disease, or get struck down in combat, can eventually become perfect in all things. I'm also wondering how to modify prickle berries into being sun berries, since good/evil plants don't show up in this version.)

I've started playing Left 4 Dead 2 on single player, to learn all the maps. I bought the game last autumn, but didn't have the time or interest to really get into the game. A few friends play, though, and I'd like to play with them without being That Jackass Who Has Never Seen The Map Before (And Doesn't Know What A Witch Is.)

My enthusiasm for Fate of the World is moderate at best. I loved the beta, thought it only needed a few touches to be a good game. The retail product ... it has quite a lot more of everything, except for two areas the beta excelled in: simplicity of use and empty promises.

And, as I have thought for the past year or two, I say again: Need to get back to playing Morrowind. Wonderful game; great fun.

I quit WoW as of February and haven't really went back. I loved the Warcraft RTSes and my interest in the MMO dropped significantly after we killed Arthas (my first Arthas kill was about three weeks before Cata dropped). I'd been playing on the same server since launch, with the same guild that I helped start back in Vanilla with many of the same people and I basically stuck it out for them for the first three months of the new xpac but it was just the same stuff over and over again. And, really, Deathwing? Shit, I've killed internet dragons before; hell I killed the dragon that was the embodiment of magic in that game. What's Deathwing to that?

Since then I've been playing Borderlands, SCII (Rank 1 in gold, hoping to move up in the ladders soon), and the original Left 4 Dead.

Table-top gaming I've only been playing Pathfinder, which we converted to after 3.5 moved to 4.0 D&D. It's a great game run by a friend of mine and we've been playing for almost four years.

Been playing WoW less since my guild stalled out at 11/12 normal. I still log in for dailies and auction house asshattery (almost half a million gold since January, even after huge splurge purchases.) I'm really waiting for the next tier so people actually come back and I have a reason to play that isn't "amass more internet currency".

The wife and I have been playing a lot of You Don't Know Jack on the 360. I can't convince any of my friends to buy it, though, so no awesome XBL games. I used to play the shit out of YDKJ on Playstation back in college, and it's still dick and fart jokes with bizarre, sometimes arcane, trivia. Quite enjoyable.

I somehow ended up buying a DS and Pokemon Black. It was long-distance hype from my brother and some of his friends. I must admit, it's pretty enjoyable for being a JRPG aimed at tweens. I'm slowly grinding up to fight the Elite Four, which is basically the penultimate boss fight in the game. Oh, and I also bought the two previous DS generations, so I have lots of dumb little critters to collect.

As for physical games, there's apparently a new wave of fixed-set deckbuilding games out there, of which Ascension is my favorite. It was designed and playtested by some former Magic pros, and it seems to have a lot of replayability. Plus it's relatively non-competitive, so my wife and I can actually play it without going to bed mad at each other.

So many of our board games are gathering dust. I really need to get a group together, even though it will probably be comprised of my wife's coworkers.

There was a UK edition back when I was at uni in the late 90's where they'd got a whole bunch of then fairly unknown UK comedians to redo the whole thing. All the dick and fart jokes went, to be replaced with snark and sarcasm. It was excellent, but conversely would've been far too British to really go over well back in the US...

I played through D&D: Daggerdale with my friends and it's a pretty fun game, but glitchy enough to fuck you over completely. I'd recommend it once they fix it, if they fix it. I rented L.A. Noire and am really not entirely sure why it isn't a television show. The gameplay is very, very bland and janky, while having no real impact on the story. I hear that the stories branch out more later on, but so far I'm just going through the motions until the case is solved. There's no real sense of stake or urgency. Also, as impressed as I am with the facial animation and acting and all that, the rest of the game looks rough and jaggy.

Section 8: Prejudice is the best FPS since Bad Company 2, and is only 15 bucks, so everyone should play it. The previous poster reminded that Outland is also a very fun platformer, sort of a 2D Prince of Persia meets Ikaruga. Really, I'm just biding time until Duke Nukem Forever comes out.

Hm, wel Call of Duty" Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops have been on a fairly constant rotation whenever I can be arsed to turn the Playstation. Good fun.

Minecraft waxes and wanes, sometimes it's fun, other times it's just rather boring, the map of a whole bunch of Studio Ghibli film locations was pretty for example, but got lonely very fast.

Oh and there's always Team Fortress 2, and for some reason EVE online. I downloaded a free trial and suddenly remembered how much fun it is to mine and explore. Don't like people though, should probably work on that if I want to get any further...

Honestly finding Dragon Age: Origins rather bland. So far that's amounted to the first extremely long main mission on Star Wars TFU 2, which was a blast, but serioulsy could have been two levels, and finally playing an Uncharted game. The first one wasn't available, so I started on the sequel and literally spent about eight straight hours playing yesterday and am excited to finish it (I think) today. Being able to help your team mates to achieve objectives is a real rush. The only problem I have with it at the moment is that the single player AI isn't as good as I would like it to be and the enemy tends to get really irritating when they block certain choke points. But fortunately all the missions are available from the start. Unfortunately I haven't been able to play much multi-player yet but since that's what it was made for it should be quite impressive.

Mass Effect 3 lets you customize your guns again. I let my WoW account lapse for now, but I'm sure I'll return to it eventually. Right now I'm playing L.A. Noire, which is amazing (if you're not playing in Black & White Mode, you're not getting the full effect). I just moved up to the Homicide desk, so I expect the cases to get even more interesting. Wish PSN would get itself sorted out and get the store back online so I can redeem the DLC codes I got when I bought the thing.

Also catching up on some old stuff (I only got my PS3 recently): Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. All are awesome in their own way and I'm enjoying them immensely.

 @DJ Stawes @Darkest
Regarding Brink:
I don't find the AI as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. Sometimes they do the usual AI sort of thing and don't really do much of any consequence, and then other times they come together as a team and you get served.
And if the AI is blocking a choke point when they're on defense I would consider that to be good AI...
My only real complaint when I'm playing 'single player' is that the ally bots can get distracted fighting over the control points leaving me as the only one trying to go for the actual objective.

Other thoughts:
- On Hard the AI is really fucking accurate. A Heavy with a heavy machine gun is no match for them.
- Playing with real people is awesome. A big part of this comes to the experience of the game developers - your avatars talk to each other so efficiently that you don't even need to talk about what you should be doing. When I play with friends we just talk shit and make jokes whilst working as a team, and when I play with strangers I don't have my mic on, they don't have theirs, and we can still pull together as a team because of the computer chat.
- The objective wheel is awesome. I tried playing the trial of Section 8: Prejudice and the voice over was telling me to go capture this, repair that, etcetera, but I had no idea where I was meant to be going. Splash Damage have had so much experience making these sorts of class-based, team-based, objective-oriented shooters that they've got it down to a fine art with Brink.
- I really love the world & character design. It has such a strong visual style.

If anyone is playing on XBL my gamertag is TailSwallower. Bonus points if you're in or near Australia so we don't have to worry about lag, though I've played with friends from Ireland and Canada and it hasn't been too bad (and they should be releasing a patch that fixes most of the lag issues any day now).

Over the Royal-weekend-bankholiday-booked-holiday-week I thought I'd maybe give this "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" a quick go. Did nothing else for nine days.
Also recent: Portal 2, which indeed is as good as everyone else says it is. Wasn't too sure about casting Stephen Merchant in it, but he turned out to be spot on for the job after all.
Have been playing Army of Two (and sequel) with the lady this weekend, and it's far, far less shite than I'd been led to expect. The first one is kind of wonky but really drives home the use of its weird game mechanics (whereby the more you fire, the more you drag enemy interest your way, until you glow red and your buddy turns almost invisible) whereas the second is far crisper and better made, but has also smoothed things out so you can play it a lot like any other cover shooter.
Besides that, the ever present attempts to regain SC2 skill, having switched to Terran. I'm now the king of hellion drop into banshee vs Protoss (in gold league at least) and can't play for shit versus anyone else.

Flabyo: I'm so glad you mentioned the British YDKJ - I'd noticed ads for XBox YDKJ and was this close (' ') to getting them, not realising they wouldn't be like the PC one I know and love.

ETA: SC2, anyone wanting to practice versus a somewhat shaky Terran in EU - I'm PaperSnake.327

I don't buy a lot of games. I'm still playing through Fallout: New Vegas more than anything, just to level high enough to feel comfortable trying Dead Money. What little I've played has made me want to throw my controller, and I've never had that in Fallout before. I'm hoping Honest Hearts will be a little more forgiving.
The fella and I finished co-op mode in Portal 2 long ago, and I've made it to the boss fight in single player, but for some reason, I haven't picked it back up since then.
Ooh, and I am so happy to see YBKJ mentioned. I played the hell out of the computer games as a kid. I did download the 360 demo, but the fella started getting mad about me answering questions reeeeeally fast and it ended up w/ him yelling a lot during Jack Attack about how he was the only one there who didn't know what the fuck was going on. So I can't see me getting that game, unless I start paying for XBL.
Now I want to play the British version.
I'd love to give Brink a spin, but I don't know about spending money on it yet. Seems like another one of those games I wouldn't get a lot out of w/out online play.

(An aside- it took me five minutes to figure out what SC2 meant. You can tell what kind of games I don't play.)

(I particularly like the view of maps, which show you where you've died the most)? I've never played an MMO long enough to actually pay the subscription fee, and since the Playstation Network lets play for free anyway, I don't know how to take it really.

 @Jamie Heron

My bar is set considerably higher for subscription games that it is for single-purchase games for the sole reason that with a subscription game, I A) can't continue playing if I don't pay up and B) I then essentially "lose" all progress at that point. So, in order to make it worth it for me to shell out the $40-60 US (or more if it's a special collector's version, which I've bought), I need to be getting a quality game. I have played, owned, and like Call of Duty but this latest move by Activision, and then the bullshit psychology of naming it "Elite"? Yeah, I'll pass for paying extra every month to get cursed out by children whose testicles haven't even dropped yet when they headshot me.

The most interesting thing about Elite as far as I can tell is that they're basically charging for something that Halo players get for free...

We'll see if the market wants to sustain it or not, which is why I see this more as Activision testing the waters. They *really* want to go for a full paygate for online play, they've said as much in past interviews. I remember them complaining that they don't get a 'cut' of the money MS make from Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. Their argument being that 'hey, we're providing the content here, we should get some of that lovely subscription fee'.

It's an experiment, and the internet backlash is already swelling.

Activision are in a rough place despite making serious money in the last year. World of Warcraft seems to be just at the beginning of what will be a fairly long tail off, I think it's growth years are over now. They've basically killed Guitar Hero by oversaturating, and they managed to damage their Tony Hawk IP so badly it'll never recover. CoD is their main cash cow, they have to tread very carefully with it, or their fall could be swift and merciless.

Watching Activision's long, slow decline should be pretty entertaining. I don't like their business practices at all, primarily because they not so much a game company as they are a company that just happens to be making its money in the games industry. I'm sure there's tons of people who work for Activision who care about games, but not one of them seems to have anything to do with the company's overall direction.

Also, the company seems incapable of adapting. What they're doing to their franchises was obvious to anyone paying attention. Oversaturation combined with mediocre sequels may be nice for the short term, for the 2-3 games before the public gets bored and wanders off, but it's just not going to work in the long run. Worse, Activision doesn't seem to have any long-run strategies outside of having Blizzard endlessly retread Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft.

I'll admit I'm not Activision's market by any stretch of the imagination. I like new and different, or at the very least new and different within the context of my favorite genres. Activision is only interested in AAA blockbuster generica, with no interest in any kind of experimentation. I think the gaming industry would be better off without them.

@Elite people (that makes me giggle): Yeah, I get the feeling that if Activision were to say that this a new feature; one which not only gives COD players loads of new features (that are available in their competitors products) and that the downside was, say, advertising on the side of the videos maybe? It would go down a lot better, or at least, I wouldn't feel so eery of the whole thing.

'Cause the thing is, I'm the kind of nut-job who would buy (and has bought) $15 DLC map packs, but this doesn't really do anything for me. I'm not that interested in the whole social networking aspect and all I really care about is the breakdown of stats and in game items. (I'm a weirdo that way). So I sort of see myself as the target market, yet all I can think about is how this could fail so bad, if it becomes central to the COD experience. Of course if it does become central to the COD experience (I like saying that, don't judge me) it fund Activision's new moon base (or whatever they make with all there WoW money). I dunno, I'm beginning to see the light that is not playing Call of Duty anymore. Unless there's zombies in it. I'd pay silly money for Modern Warfare 3 zombie DLC.

@Eidos people: I think they have other things to worry about...

Curse you, Fauxhammer! Must drag my old PS out of the closet and replay Legacy of Kain now. That was one of my favorites from the PS.

Pen and Paperwise I'm running a D&D 3E Planescape game with a bunch of friends and am having fun making them jaunt about getting tangled in the plots of angels and fiends while exposing them to the horrors of the Blood War.

I'm going between raiding with my guild in WoW. We've downed BoT and are now poking at Nef and Al'Akir. Overall it feels like most are progressing far more slowly in Cata than in the past.

Also been working my way through New Vegas. I've worked long and hard building trust with all the disparate factions in the mojave, I'll be damned if I'm handing the reins over to that creepy old man, the Legion or the NCR. Dave Foley and I will preside over a free Vegas. Sadly it looks like Interplay is going down in flames and the Fallout MMO they're working on will never see the light of day. Maybe Bethesday will grab that back up.

On the portable I just finished Okamiden (super fun and cute) and am starting Radiant Historia because I love me some turn based RPGs. The combat is more fun than just lining up on either side and involves the player bashing the enemies around a grid to group them to do max damage and get bonus gold and xp...or you could just turn on the auto-battle.

My Xbox is currently en route to be repaired for the deadly red ring. I haven't had a functioning console in over a month. Which hasn't been too bad since I've been too busy to play much anyway, but still annoying.

So when I get it back in a couple of weeks, it'll be like all of my games are brand new! Man am I going to have a lot of xbox live updates to download. I'm very much looking forward to getting back to Reach multiplayer, Red Dead, NBA 2K11, Borderlands, RUSE... many to choose from.

In the meanwhile, what little play time I have has been spent on Team Fortress 2 on my computer, plus a little Starcraft II and Rome Total War. I haven't been utterly deprived.

Seems like another one of those games I wouldn't get a lot out of w/out online play.

Without online play (or regular LAN parties if you're on PC) it's a rental only. With online play it's fantastic and only gets better the more real people you have in a match. Also the first (and free) DLC should drop in the next few days which adds a couple more maps, more abilities, increased level cap, etc, so I'm excited.

Been playing Project Zomboid. Alpha tech demo only at this stage, but a whole lot of potential. And only 5 pound for a lifetime subscription (full game once it's done and all future updates).

Was back to playing WoW, but...meh. I've moved on to Rift, which is a lot of fun so far. I think I describe it best as taking the better parts of WoW and WAR and combining them with some new shit to make one fun ass game.

Also been playing lots of Shogun 2: Total War. Damn is taking over Japan difficult! I love the Total War games and I think this one is the best yet. Though I did skip Napoleon.

Wish I could get a DnD game (or any other pen n paper RPG) going on a regular basis, alas it never happens. I am in a Blood Bowl league now though. Plus am getting into Warmachine/Hordes, so that is a lot of fun.

I had a mad idea today and wondered if any of you rpg'ers have tried this:

2 Storytellers (DM's, whatever) running two independent games with different players, each telling the same story but from different angles. Eventually the players from one game meet the players from the other, resulting in an rpg crossover.

Obviously this would be easier in DnD since the games come pre packaged in most cases, but I'm thinking of doing it in an old World of Darkness setting. It would take a lot of work for it to pay off, mostly on the cooperation of the Storytellers, but I might have to try it some day soon.

I "beat" Pokemon Black. The quotes are up because now that I've done that, there's an enormous amount of endgame crap to do (though a lot of it is terrible grindy shit, so I don't know how much of it I'm going to do). I might wade into the other two Pokemon games I got, but I might just give it a rest for a bit. I have many other things I ought to be doing, like reading.

(who am I kidding I'm just going to play WoW)

In other videogame related news, it seems more and more likely that Bioware is shooting for a late 2011/Christmas release. I'm probably inordinately excited about it, as it's just another third-person MMORPG in the EQ/WoW/Rift lineage, but something about it has me really excited. I mean, it's just WoW in Star Wars clothes from what I can tell, but it seems different, somehow. Maybe it's because it's a sci-fi game in a genre that's solidly high fantasy. I guess what I'm saying is that killing dragons is fun, but I really want to kill dragons IN SPACE. Anyone else going to be lining up for it Day One?

Kicked some stranger arse on Brink last night. Loving it, and the best thing is there's about to be some free DLC adding a new bit of everything.

Usually I'm slightly above average when it comes to playing shooters online, but last night I topped the leader board for XP earned in each round, playing with three to five other people of the same or higher rank than me.
I also dragged my team kicking and screaming to victory a couple of times (maybe a slight exaggeration, but I definitely changed classes and grabbed the objective at the last minute [last 3 seconds literally one time] because the rest of the team couldn't/wouldn't do it).

Also, Operative is a whole lot of fun. Hacking turrets for kicks, using Comm Hack to give your whole team the location of every single enemy, using disguise to get behind an engineer on his way to repair the bot and then unloading an SMG clip into his back - so much fun. And then occasionally you get to do something useful and actually hack an objective for your team.

If they had dedicated servers for Xbox I'd think about starting or joining a clan, but without them I don't think my internet is fast enough for competitive play.

I was incredibly impressed with ME2, it was everything I wanted it to be, and I've got a good feeling about the third (and, presumably and hopefully, final) installment. The first guitar riff I hear, though, I'll be very displeased.

@Corey Waits: See, that's interesting, because I remember one of the trailers for the first game (though for all I know it was unique, and the other trailers were very shooty-shooty-faster-pussycat-kill-kill-KILL) having a very low, tense, much more atmospheric quality to it. The fact that it was voiced by Keith "Captain Anderson" David only helped. That, along with the "this is PRECISELY what Star Trek crossed with Star Wars would look like, and thus I owe it to me eight-year-old self to play this game, plus it's super-god-damn PRETTY" visuals was what convinced me to play it in the first place.

Aha. Here we go:

Though I remember it being shorter, crammed down to a 30-or-45-second TV spot. Which probably worked in its favor, I think, because this one's a bit rambly.

I would guess that EA's(or whoever's in charge of such things) marketing team is operating on the assumption that, if you bought the first and second game, you're probably going to buy the third. They're not worried about getting those folks interested in ME3. So, they're trying to steal a few people from the Halo, Call of Duty, and Gears of War end of things because that demographic is pretty big, and it tends to bring in loads upon loads of money, and that's what video game companies need to keep making video games. Hence the mindless bullet-spewing, the cliche plot pitch, and the we're-trying-so-hard-to-be-Halo's-more-rockin'-tunes-but-we-can't-quite-make-it music.

And, as most of us seem to be saying, I don't think the trailer, no matter how groan-worthy, has lost them any buyers, so they probably making a pretty safe gamble.

In other news:

I've very nearly finished L.A. Noire. Now, I understand everyone's gripes with it. Yes, the game sort of plays itself a lot of times, up to and including moving your character for you, even when you don't want it to. Yes, it's nigh-on-impossible to lose a case in the investigation-interrogation part. Yes, some of the non-metaplot cases seem to repeat themselves a bit, either in plot or dialogue. And (my only REAL gripe) it doesn't become a TRUE Noir story until way, way later in the game than I would have liked.

I recognize all this.

It's just... I'm having waaaaay too much fun to care. It just hits all the right notes for me - again, I see why it's disappointed a lot of people, but personally, this game was everything I wanted it to be, and just a little bit more. Hell, I have just sat in front of the TV watching the start-up screen, with its beautiful black-and-white, Eisner-like menu, and its sad, haunting trumpet and piano score, narrating my own life in film-noir internal monologue.

If Rockstar made a game using more or less the same system, but have you playing as a private dick instead of a public one, where you could choose which cases you wanted to take (maybe determining which metaplot you play through in that game, perhaps?), where a big game mechanic is establishing contacts that you can use in different cases (an understanding cop, a cowardly mob message-runner, a plucky young girl reporter, for example), and where there was a bit of a character customization element... I don't think I'd ever have to play another game again. That would just be the game I'd play for the rest of my life - and with that choose-your-case thing, it could have a much better replay value than L.A. Noire did (and, sadly, I don't think I'll ever play L.A. Noire again after I'm finished).

@Alan Tyson - Ah, I just realised that Mass Effect changed publishers between 1 & 2. 1 was published by Microsoft, 2 & 3 by EA. Makes sense now that the advertising is so different - Microsoft would want to push it as an RPG because they didn't previously have a sci-fi RPG in their stable (and advertising it as a sci-fi action game could be seen as cannibalising Halo's fanbase), whilst I don't think EA understand anything except for big and flashy and stupid.

Really looking forward to ME3 - just hoping I have time for a second playthrough with all the DLC before it's out.

Otherwise the Halo Anniversary game is interesting, and I might pick it up because Halo was always my favourite of the trilogy. Halo 4 is interesting simply because such a huge franchise has changed hands and I'll be interested in seeing if 343 can do a decent job with the storyline (though that said, even Bungie dropped the ball with the storyline after the first book and the first game).

Except I got to bring my girlfriend along too, for half the show. Much walking, looking at stuff, scoring of swag (Minecraft t-shirt signed by Notch!) and general geekery. I put LA Noire aside and am going through Borderlands. Man, what a fun game. I love when I activate Berserk, and my dude runs around, screaming and punching. I feel like a putz for not going through it sooner.

Some reactions on what was shown at E3:

-I really hope Space Marine can deliver--I'm a big dork for WH40K fluff (though I have little interest in the actual tabletop game, aside from maybe putting together some models some day), and I really want to mess around in that world. Kill Team looks dope, too.
-I'm interested in seeing what another developer can do with the Halo franchise (though I'll be waiting for the reviews on Halo 3).
-I am positively moist for Bioshock: Infinite.
-I'm currently ripshit that the demo for El Shaddai is XBL Gold only right now. That's probably the game I'm most psyched to see right now.
-ME3 is going to rock bells, natch.

@James Cunningham--I like the direction Nintendo's taking here. The WiiU remotes remind me of the Gamecube/GBA connectivity gimmick, but in a good way. I think price is going to be an issue here, though; a lot of the Wii's success came from its price point, and I don't see how Nintendo can keep the price down when each controller is pretty much a tablet PC. It'll be interesting to see how things shake out.

@Flabyo--I really dug the demonstration of Fable: The Journey. The spellcasting what pretty much what I wanted to see from Kinect from the beginning.

@James Cunningham - Could you get a sense of the difficulty in Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet? Been watching that a long time, waiting for the release, though the videos make it look like it may be more challenging than my sissy thumbs can handle.

@IssacSher - If I enjoyed Infamous 1 except for the sort of miserable, grimy environment, do you figure I'd enjoy Infamous 2? I hear the environments are more varied, which has my interest piqued.

I found Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet pretty easy in the demo I played, with my deaths being due to screwing around learning rather than actual "I'm gonna die!" challenge. What I played is from start through first boss fight, though, which was confirmed to be the same demo you'll be seeing on XBLA when the game hits. I loved what I played, though, and found it nicely accessible.

Next article posted- Quarrel. Think a combination of Risk and Scrabble. The presentation is a bit too family-friendly for my tastes but the gameplay was gold.

@Tango Charlie -- The city is based on New Orleans this time, and they did make a solid effort to differentiate the setting from the first Empire City. There are grimy parts, but there are also some very nice and relatively clean areas, like the obvious French Quarter-inspired zone, with its cheerful lighting and ample plantlife. There's also some bayou-esque areas which are fun. Later on, you do open up a zone that's still ripped apart from "the recent flood" (aka Hurricane Katrina), which is pretty broken up -- bit it makes sense that its like that. So there are grimy areas, but there are nicer areas, and there isn't the omnipresent miasma of urban decay that the first game had.

@IsaacSher - I'm loving Dyn7, especially as Dyn6 was so poor. I'm going for the full 1000 gamerscore on it, but I'm at the point where I have to grind conquest mode for another 10 hours to get every character to max level, so I'm just playing it a bit at a time now.

Made me go back and start reading Three Kingdoms again as well, only got about as far as the death of Liu Bei last time I tried. It's Moss Roberts huge unabridged translation. Just past the battle of Chi Bi in it (chapter 47! of 200 odd!)
