DC Comics unleashes a new universe of superhero titles

Starting this summer, the publisher will re-number its entire DC Universe of titles, revamping famous characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others from its 76-year history for a more modern and diverse 21st century.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/2011-05-31-dc-comics-reinvents_n.htm

I'm not much of a superhero comic person myself, but this really got my attention:

In an even more important move in the competitive comics industry, DC is making issues of all the renumbered titles available digitally via apps and a DC website the same day they arrive in comic shops. It marks the first time a major comics publisher has done so with its popular superhero titles.

These guys understand the digital marketplace, it seems. Day-and-date multiformat is the best way to combat piracy, I would say.

Interesting news. I never got in to mainstream DC, and this may change that, which I believe is exactly the response they are looking for.

Day-and-date multiformat is the best way to combat piracy, I would say.

It may not be the best way to shut down piracy, but it is probably the best way to make money in an era of piracy. I think too many companies focus on the former rather than the latter. Besides, I would like to think that piracy after the original purchase isn't that much worse that people reading physical copies that have been left lying around (though there are probably many numbers out there to prove me wrong).

The chip on DC's shoulder has not been as obvious as it is today! They could have just launched their own Ultimate style imprint (had their chance with All-Star and only managed to make that version of Superman truly great) rather than relaunch everything for the benefit of newcomers/movie going audiences curious about superheroes but just can NOT be bothered to check out of a few choice trades to learn what a guy like Superman or Batman are all about. It simply HAS to be #1 or it's not worth jumping into. It's like some fucking nerd club and you have to be there in line or be left out until the next time they relaunch! Anyway, good luck with all that. I'm just waiting for Batwoman to ship already :D

This sort of excites me, I've stopped reading many DC books because they seem tired. I'm not going to say it's a good idea until it happens though. I find it to be interesting considering that so many people expected them to renumber under the legacy system of totally volume numbers like Marvel has been. Being a comic nerd I have seen a lot of relaunches to number 1 and I've seen very little effect if the talent is not up to the task and even then as soon as the talent leaves the title many readers quickly follow (see any title Johns has left). I wish them the best. What they need to do is land a Matt Fraction or a Jonathan Hickman, that would help a bunch.

I kind of figured that Superhero stories all recycled themselves every two or three years anyways. You know X-Men fight Apocalypse, Xavier disappears,X- men fight Sentinels, Xavier Returns, X-Men fight Magneto then it starts all over again. If they just started back at # 1 ever three years then the audience would know that they are teenagers now and could move on to mature reader graphic novels, creator owned or alternative books, letting the next generation of wee ones start fresh? I really don't know anything though in 1988 I thought Peter Parker was a photographer in college trying to make his way in the world in the world but it turns out he's still in high school?.

When I a kid reading this stuff the continuity issues where really confusing, so if Kids are still the main audience maybe starting fresh will work?

I stay away from the internet for a couple of days and when I come back the folks at DC have lost their fucking minds. This whole thing reads like a fake April Fools Day story.

I guess I need to wait and see how this shakes out, but if it does what it says on the tin, this is bad news for the few really interesting books DC has put out in recent years, most notably the Batman line, which would be crippled by a rollback to an earlier status quo.

(EDITED TO ADD: The above comments refer, obviously, to the creative relaunch of the line and not to the day and date digital stuff, which is a splendid idea. Unfortunately, It is not beyond the realm of corporate excuses to imagine a scenario where the whole thing goes down and flames and the suits blame the digital aspect instead of the relaunch. Which could result in others being very sceptical of digital publishing.

 Upon reading this news:

Day and date digital: Yay! (sorry brick and mortar stores, thems the breaks)

Rebooting the entire DCU with 50 titles: Seriously? Again?

Jim Lee redesigning everybody's costumes: Oh, for fuck's sake.

as opposed to having to work within decades of schizophrenic canon every word and every panel?
I'd rather have the decades of schizophrenic canon to mine and weave into stories (a la Morrison) then have to work under the constant threat that any groundwork for a longform story I'm trying to tell will have to be thrown out because Geoff Johns has decided he wants to re-write every superhero's origin for the fourth fucking time in under ten years.

Beyond how this may or may not effect Morrison's Batman run, does this kill 'Multiversity,' too?

And the following quote just throws up a giant 'wtf?':
Geoff Johns promised USA Today "a focus on the interpersonal relationships within DC's trademark superteam." "What's the human aspect behind all these costumes?" he tells the publication. "That's what I wanted to explore."
Isn't that exactly what he was doing with JLA post-Infinite Crisis/52? And it lasted, what, two years before he had Red Arrow shooting heroin and fucking dead cats in back alleys?

This wouldn't bother me if I didn't think that DC will in all likelihood take the wrong lesson from this inevitable failure and, rather than adding some additional reigns on Johns and loosening up on the actual creatives in the company, they'll just retreat from the digital space again and continue to let Johns do whatever he wants.

Honestly I'm not sure how this will pan out. From my experience, even the better written DC comics are kinda hard to follow, since they seem to rely heavily on the distant history of the characters, and more or less assume you know who/what plot point that ties into issue number whatever is. I worked as a flatter on a couple DC books last year, which lead me to buying copies of said books, some were good, some were confusing but I didn't really keep reading after the books I helped on.

The idea of tossing everything out and starting over seems like it might be a somewhat good idea, but all the titles at once seems a little extreme. I guess its "Go big or go home"?

Well, it's certainly fucking crazy. I don't read much DC now, but I'll probably check out a few new titles if they seem interesting or have some creators I like doing them. Looks like a new Grant Morrison Superman title is on the way, which is cool, but Batman Incorporated isn't even a year old yet and it's either getting a reboot or just going away? Not loving the new costumes, but I guess, since I really just have no investment in DC books at all, I really don't care that much. As more of a Marvel guy, though, I guess I'd be wary if every book in the entire line got shuffled around, continuity-wise, and started over at #1 (even though Marvel does start their books over quite a bit, only to change the numbering back once another "milestone" issue is hit...).

Anyway, it's a ballsy move, but they're still basically the same thing -comic books - which is part of the problem why they don't sell in the first place, I guess. If DC had scrapped single issues altogether and only done online and original graphic novels, that would be something...

Oh, and 52 new first issues is way too damn many.

I can't say that I've bought a mainstream DC floppy nearly ever in my comic reading life. And this isn't likely to break that streak. But this does continue to reinforce my happiness switching to following creator-owned titles more exclusively. (My Marvel output is down to a mere one or two titles at the moment.)

I'm more curious to see how the day and date digital impacts the industry as that's something that might get me back into more of a monthly periodical mode. I've been dumping floppies for trades mostly due to storage and reuse issues...but am about ready to climb onto the tablet bandwagon and could be checking out more digital issues as a result.

I'm willing to see where they go with this.

If it turns out to be a giant pile of fuckup ala I'm The Goddammned Batman, they can always pull the plug on it, bring back the old post-Final Crisis multiverse, and have Lois wake up to find Kal-El in the shower, still happily married, and complain about the weird dream they had last night.

Or it might actually turn out to be good, and be the sort of restructuring that DC needed for long-term survival, by drawing in newer and younger readers who were afraid or disinterested in continuity baggage, but loved superhero stuff in general. Also, creating the online channel and heavily supporting it might bring in new readers who would never, ever, EVER step foot in a comic store.

Geoff Johns isn't a perfect writer, but I've found his work better than most. Jim Lee giving everyone a fresh coat of costume paint isn't too horrible -- he's got about a 65-35 hit/miss ratio with me on designs, and even his bad designs aren't horrid, just not great. I'm very surprised that they're even having him do a redesign on Superman, as DC usually seems to prefer gradual costume shifts for him, as to maintain the iconic image as much as possible (Mountain Dew Blue Voltage Superman notwithstanding).

But yeah, if it works, great! If it doesn't, they can always hit the cosmic reset-retcon button again and go back to business as usual, and the fandom would very likely forgive them again.

I kind of find it weird that they let an artist that is clearly from the 90s redesign everything for 2011. I would have preferred maybe Frank Quitely. What do you guys think?

From the perspective of attempting to improve the industry as a whole though it is a great idea. Reboot and make the universe shine at the same time they begin releasing digital comics in a way that I (and even more important new readers) can hopefully get behind. I do hope they won't be $2.99 though. Any word yet on pricing and any thoughts on it?

On one hand, it's wild to see the #2 superhero comics publisher reach the point of creative bankruptcy to the point where they think they have to just give up and start over.

On the other, it's a bit sad to see them still believe so strongly in the myth of the "new reader." For the most part, when it comes to superhero comics there are no new readers, or at least not enough to make any significant change in the market. Stunts like this aren't going to bring a flood of people who previously weren't reading superhero comics into stores. All it will do will lure a relatively small, and mostly temporary, boost in sales to DC's comics. Most of those customers will give up on them within a short time.

Superhero comics are a habit hobby that appeals less and less to fewer and fewer people. Stunts like this don't get you a bigger, loyal audience.

Personally, I think the superhero comic audience would be happy with a quality product that came out on a regular, reliable schedule. They just want a decent Batman comic on the second Wednesday of every month.

This is top-down bad news for shops, and for once it's not their fault. up to 50% of their weekly comics stock just got impossible to anticipate, more expensive & riskier to stock, and harder to sell. Even good shops will be hurt by this, and maybe it's the retail blood in me or nostalgia, but I don't see this as a good thing. This may actually put some struggling shops out of business, which may seem doom and gloom, but this is the start of a long-coming reprisal in comics retailing that will hurt the little guy the most.

Any other ideas that DC could use to modernize their characters?

So I decided to tweet some ideas for DC to use yesterday in their relaunch and thought I would share them here.

Superboy title - hipster with huge mustache falls in love while dealing with psychic powers. #modern

Firestorm. An undercover chinese agent in America meets an ancient mathematical problem and can rearrange time in 5 min chunks

Super-Lantern. Mash-up title involving a hybrid of John Stewart and Kal-el fighting against Satanic magic-eating aliens.

Flash can be a self-aware virus that causes the carrier to have super speed...until they die. #modern

Outsiders can be a series of fringe political activists that gain powers and fight against the system...and each other. #modern

Green Lantern can now be a woman named JaM, a slam poet with a mind that smashes out the craziest light constructs

Teen Titans can be in a correctional program and get hit by lightning. #modern

Robin can now be a robot ninja assassin with a heart made out of green tights and trapeze wire.

Let's make Deadman Aliveman and dress him in purple and gold and make him have dancing powers.

Let's relaunch Batman with a ponytail and a hole in his mask for it. That will be modern!

Jet Ski Aquaman is the next gen Auquaman. Starring Jellly the jellyfish, and Fin, the tuna in a can!

Is it just me, or can DC kind of say goodbye to their back catalogue for some time? One thing I've never understood is why the Big Two aren't presenting their digital material in such a way that gives potential readers a sufficient structure to encourage picking up the current books (print or otherwise).

If you go to Marvel's digital library, it's easily as impenetrable as LCS, if not more so, because there's nobody to talk to. What they should be doing is giving people the collected Jonathan Hickman run on Fantastic Four for 20 bucks, just in time for them to go out and pick up the new Future Foundation book, and replicating that for all their major series. They should be bundling all those oft-referenced "classic" stories together for cheap(-er than trades), make them an impulse purchase so that it's not too much of a financial burden if you're just reading it for continuity's sake (a shitty concept to have to facilitate, but I think it'd work).

I don't read any DC mainstream books at the moment, but could potentially be interested in a few digital books with the reboot, but only if they actually offer up a proper "download and do as you will" model, which I can't see happening for some time.

Their digital releases will be the same price as the print versions.

Regular folks not wanting to pay five bucks for five minutes of reading is a good part of their current woes. Having it on your iPad isn't going to change that. They're either going to have to drop the price significantly, or up the amount of content significantly. There are no shipping costs and no storage costs to be met. And Apple's cut can't be that big.

That is, IF they really want it to be a jumping on point for new readers. I'm willing to bet there's something else at play (Their imminent loss of Superman? Their probably correct view that the fanboys will keep buying no matter what? My first reaction: DC is desperate. Then, I refined this to...

My second reaction: This will have little to no impact. This mythical audience they are seeking to lure in, this "new generation" they're looking to entice with an entry point AND day-and-date digital releases - they have no reason to jump on board. Truly. Every semester I ask my students - aged 19-25, roughly - what they read and where they get it. At least half have zero interest in superhero books, while close to 90% download them already - as scans. Day-and-date digital releases really won't change this. Again, why would someone who's been getting a product for free for months or years suddenly decide to pay $3-$5 a pop when they can STILL get it for free?

My final reaction: I don't follow characters. I buy my books based on who's writing. Period. If that means in six months I'll be reading an Aquaman monthly by Morrison, Paul Cornell's take on the Metal Men, or Warren's take on Hawkworld - then, so be it.

Like most of I find this more interesting then anything.
The influx of #1 won't change what I buy....though it does seem like a good place to stop collecting monthlies and switch to trades.

As for digital release, what I'd love to see, and I have no idea on how to make this work, would be a way to get comics digitally and then a trade at a discounted price. Something like Flashpoint or Fear Itself or any "Event" comic practically begs to be read as a monthly as they so often tie into other titles. I'd love to read Flashpoint for...i dunno a dollar or 2 an issue, but then get some of that back if I wanted the trade.
Or maybe I order the trade at full price before issue 1 ships, and I get it all digital versions as it is released, and then the trade shipped to me a few months later.
Anyone trying anything like that?

@mjmartinejohn Your tweet about the Flash sounds like it'd be an interesting book to read.

@DavidLejeune Dare I ask what "Jim Lee's John Constantine" looks like? Does he have a high collar and a short leather biker jacket?

I think, if DC wanted to capture "new readers" they'd need to advertise better. Not just this "Oh we're making news by relaunching EVERYTHING AT ONCE". All I've noticed, advertising wise, is stuff for Superman, Batman, and sometimes Wonder Woman. Basically any character they have a big movie coming out for or TV series pitch. I'm sure there are people out there that JUST found out that Green Lantern is a DC character. But still, they don't advertise the comics themselves that I've noticed, outside of ads in their own comics >_> that are often placed in the middle of the book, breaking up the action and making me grumpy. D: I haven't read a lot of DC comics, only a few, maybe they're not all set up that way.

Anyway, I think there's loads of potential with the DC's cavalcade of heroes, but I'm not sure relaunching the books should be handled like pulling off a bandaid (all at once, real fast get it over with). Especially if no one out side their regular readership finds out about it. Not a lot of "non comics readers" have heard about the news of DC's relaunch from what I've noticed. But then, maybe they're just trying to get "new readers" from established comic book readers of other companies?

I dunno, maybe the books will be less dependent on events that happened in the books in the 1980s that I didn't read? If they don't advertise though, it'd be like, "If a comic company redoes all their comics at once in the forest and there's no one to hear but their current readers, will they get new readers?"

Ultimately it comes down to the quality of the comics, and therefor the creative teams behind them (and probably, to some extent, the editors pushing for certain directions). If nothing changes in that sense, then this is a trivial and useless undertaking. I guess I'll reserve judgement for now.

I'm on the side of useless and trivial undertaking...after all, the 'hard line' between the new and old universe is only as good as the creative teams willingness not to reference the old continuity. That sort of thing (if prior reboots are any indication) is only good for a very limited amount of time.

Plus, I'm not sure that flooding the market with 50 first issues in a month is going to do meaningful things to your sales. It may even hurt books like Batwoman who may get lost in the shuffle.

But again, I'm not playing the game any longer anyway...so good luck and more power to them.

Frankly, I rarely buy singles anymore anyway, so this doesn't affect me too much. Much like others here, I tend to buy based on the writer, not the character. I've loved, loved, loved arcs on Green Lantern and Batman and Aquaman and Superman and Green Arrow and way more obscure teams (not obscure to you guys, but you know, definitely not Trinity-level names). However, this was either because the story itself sounded crazy enough to work, or the writer on it was someone I trusted/had been told to trust by trustworthy people. And the stories I want to read tend to either be in trades already or pre-destined for trades. For instance, Blackest Night, which was one of the best and most berzerker strange GL story in a long, long time, could be pre-ordered in trade form something like two issues in or something equally absurd. It seems to me that a better model might be to perhaps jack the cost of trades a bit, lower the cost of books and downloads, and offer something special within the trade like sketches or essays or stuff like that which is already covered by nicer ends. Then, offer a little code in each physical/download copy that allows you to get a discount on the trade for each issue within it you've purchased, or alternatively lets you acquire a digital copy of individual issues as they come out if you pre-purchase the trade.

Why do I bring this up in this thread? Because this all seems to me to be a ploy, and I don't mean that in a negative sense, to get readers back into comics. The numbers are shrinking slowly but surely and DC has been on the losing end for a while. But from what I know being a recent college student is that kids my age tend to buy collections. There is this feeling that you don't want to have to scour for the beginning of your story and you don't want to have to make ten trips for the same loaf of bread, so to speak. As a long-time reader, I know the unique positions of reading a serial month-to-month and all at once and how neither is better than the other by necessity, but most people at least my age seem to skew towards wanting all the issues right now. This is a huge gamble for them to keep getting people to buy the monthlies, but the demographic they are chasing doesn't seem to be interested in monthlies at all.

Now, younger kids I see in shops go for single issues without fail. I think we all remember that time for ourselves; you go in a shop and you find the absolute coolest cover with hopefully the coolest name and you buy it, because what matters is being taken away for 22 pages to a different place. And older buyers (saying late 20s and up, from my experience) tend to do similar, but on a more regimented following of books or story threads or writers. But still, even with digital, I can't read sign up for a prescription to have the new Batman Inc downloaded onto my Kindle every first Wednesday. I still have to manually purchase each chapter, typically in a store or a devoted website, and then I have to read it in their formats on my computer screen and not the easy-on-the-eyes Kindle.

Their pricing strategy and release of day-and-date digital will earn them some sales and rightfully so. That change has been a long time coming. But this feels overblown in the wrong parts and half-assed in others. I mean, they took back Madame Xanadu, Constantine, and (god above) Swamp Thing, only to reboot everything. They just finished a year-long special to ressurrect Swamp Thing in order to imbue him with the White Entity to protect all life forever, and it feels rather abrupt from a narrative point of view to have a miniseries set in an altered past of the same universe be the transition away from that.

I don't mean for this to sound like I'm complaining that comics continuity changes or shifts in weird ways. Hell, I am an unabashed fan of Crisis on Infinite Earths pretty much because of how it turned everything on its ear relatively quickly, definitely permanently, and in a way that historically was unheard of. And I hold hope that the business end of this isn't written in stone yet and can adapt a bit more and that we get some great stories out of it (I'm a closet Aquaman fan, so I'm hoping they give me more fantasy writing with him; that's always great stuff). But I have some series worries.

Also, thank god Wonder Woman got rid of that fucking mini-jacket.

Hmm, once I got over the collars on that new Justice League picture, I was struck with a thought.
"I'm Superman. I have an oath against killing."
"I'm the god-damned Batman. I have an oath against killing."
"I'm Green Lantern. I have a machine gun I made with my mind."

I mean seriously, Supes is OK standing next to someone who's machinegunning people? I'm sure Aquaman managed to bullshit him with something like "No, no, it's just the light here in the Hall of Justice that makes this look like a razor-sharp spear. It's my..er.. kingly sceptre. I have no intention of using it to decapitate people." But you think he'd notice a glowing green machine gun.

Man, DC Comics not only doesn't know what it's doing, it never knew what it was doing. (I can prove this with charts and graphs.) Superman and Wonder Woman are irreparably broken, Batman's not much better, the Flash and Green Lantern have also run out of interesting things to do or say and the B-List of the DC Universe is alternately quirky and annoying. Remember when DC used to have war comics (Sgt. Rock, the Haunted Tank, the Losers, the Unknown Soldier, Blackhawk) and Western comics (Jonah Hex*, Scalphunter, Firehair, Bat Lash, El Diablo, Cinammon) and fantasy comics (um, Amythist?) and romance comics? Yeah, they cancelled all that so they could focus on beating Marvel at their own game and then failing at that. Any of the titles I listed above (yes, even Firehair - google it, Joe Kubert worked on it) would be preferable to more tinkering with continuity and announcing a bold new direction to nowhere. Whatever happened to the Milestone revival and the Red Circle heroes? Oh, right, they failed or never even happened to begin with. Stay classy, DC.

* So the only DC Comic I buy is Jonah Hex and the latest issue (#68) has a teaser comic for SUPER 8 AND a teaser comic for John Constantine's return to the Main DCU. I know DC wants me excited by their product but I purposefully avoid it and only buy Jonah Hex because fucking Batman isn't likely to intrude upon it. They did this a while back with a preview of, of all things, Power Girl in Jonah Hex and it just seemed .... kinda stupid. Granted, the writing team was the same so I could see why they did it but man!

Writers work (have to work, want to work, or whatever else you can cook up) within a set of stringent parameters and deliver the work we're seeing. More freedom would be a good thing, but will the fucking fanboys want it?
Besides you can run anything into the ground, even if it doesn't have superheroes in it. Look at Fables, I loved that series, now I couldn't care less (yes, even before they started with the superhero-thing).

I like my superhero comics, by the way, and am genuinely looking forward to what the DCU has in store for me. If it's good,I'll keep buying it. If it's not, well there's a million other books I can keep reading.

I don't agree with the statements that certain characters are irreparably broken. What does that even mean in a medium where you can start over infinitely? If it's broken you really can fix it, just start over.

Concerning Vertigo, I still buy a lot of their books and they're really good (Hellblazer, DMZ, Northlanders, Scalped,...). No disrespect intended, but aren't you a little hard on present Vertigo or looking at past-Vertigo through rose-tinted glasses?

I stand by my statement about Superman and Wonder Woman being "irreparably broken" and can offer further insights into what exactly I mean by this. Wonder Woman has had so many "bold new directions" and changes to her status quo that there's nothing that can really be done with her anymore that hasn't been done already. Is she still an ambassador of peace? Is she still a warrior-woman? Does she still have a connection to mythology or to the world of espionage? I'll admit that there may have been fine WW comics recently - I obviously haven't read them but from what I can gather, people liked Greg Rucka and Gail Simone's runs - and I used to read WW waaaay back when it was frankly terrible (I'm talking well before the first Crisis). Her character has been so muddled, there isn't anything there anymore.

Superman is a slightly different story. When John Byrne rebooted him 25 years ago (jeez, I'm OLD), he got rid of all the extraneous elements that have all since been brought back by various writers(no Beppo the Super Monkey yet but I'm hoping). Now, I love me some goofy old Silver Age Superman but trying to make him "relevant" has destroyed my interest in the character. JMS's "walkabout" storyline was pretty dumb and the story in Action 900 (where he renounces his citizenship) was risible in linking the protests of the Arab Spring to a goofy superhero. Real people are being killed protesting for freedom and I scarcely think that's fodder for a Superman story.

But mr Hex , I think the character, like for instance Wonder Woman, is a cypher. it doesn't really have any quality of its own, it can be everything you describe and more: ambassador of peace, warrior woman, Greek goddess, BDSM enthusiast, international mysterious espionage lady, whatever. The fact that a lot of people have written a lot of bad stories about her, really shouldn't matter for a new writer. Just take any of the directions that are possible with the character if they fit within the story you want to tell, and go from there. For a talented writer, these characters can be molded in whatever way you please. They're never broken, except maybe for the really bad characters, like Tyroc, or Armless Tiger Man.

I sometimes feel there's a difference between the American view of these characters and the European view; for the American public, the stories have to be "true" to the character, and the character has some intrinsic meaning, some relevance which the writer has to express. Whereas European readers like the iconoclastic treatment of the character; put a slightly different spin on it, take it in some odd new direction. I have no interest in any character as long as they're being written badly. But when it's announced that Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang are going to do Wonder Woman, I start getting interested.

I'm not too excited. From the announcements so far it just looks like DC is shuffling around the writers and artists it already had. Which is not at all exciting. And not worth losing Morrison's Batman Inc for. Maybe I'll be less annoyed if they allow Inc to continue separately as an elseworlds companion to this nuDC but for the most part I'm really frustrated that the story that's basically the reason I even go into a comic store anymore is getting shut down so the Justice League can have a bunch of V-Necks and Wonder Woman can have a choker that gives her a V-Neck.

I dunno, waiting to see the creative teams on the remaining titles, cause that's what matters. Listen all, it's a mistake to associate this with some perceived problem with superheroes. The problem with superheroes is that you never get to end their story. Ever. They're stuck in a permanent 2nd act, and the writer has to wring some dramatic blood from that stone. All the Crisis, crossover absurdity is the only sane reaction to getting stuck with those characters for fifteen odd years of your life. Y'all know why Dark Reign was (on the whole) good? Because Osborn followed a dramatic arc. It was predictable, but it was still there. You don't get to do that with Superman. Morrison managed to turn that into a strength, but that's because he's a genius. Guys like Ed Brubaker get around that by putting minor characters in lead roles, letting them tell actual story.

Nextwave did not care about such pittances. Nextwave punched your character arc in the dickhole.

I'll tell you what I'd do if I suddenly had superhuman control over the industry.

I know you're curious. Come closer.

First, I'd fold as many titles into each other as possible. The whole Bat Family would get one, maybe two books. Then I'd make the books come out weekly, juggling writers the same way 52 did. Of course, 52 almost killed the writers, but that was just because the system wasn't set up for it. There's be skip weeks, of course, and down times. TV writers do it all the time. David Simon hears your whining and cares not. Each book would be internally consistent, but there'd be no great pressure to make the Superman line jibe with the Batman line. If you want to launch a big event book, it's its own book and you advertise in the respective lines. If the Batman team wants to have an A plot with Superman, there's no need to make sure Superman isn't punching space-Hitler into Tau Ceti that month, just have him show up.

At the end of the month, or the end of the quarter, you publish a big old Shonen Jump style paperback trade and let it go to the few remaining bookstores. That's your bread and butter. This way, you can have your high profile creators, your Warrens and Grants and Gregs writing stand-alone takes on characters without fucking with your beloved continuity.

There. I am genii. Give me gold.

Jon that's so fucking crazy it could probably just work!

They'll never do it of course, but the idea of wrapping say the Batman environment into two books (say, the Bat Family in one book, and the police/birds of prey/The question in the other), would be a lot more interesting. Each week would concentrate on a certain character arc, so batman one week, Nightwing another, Batgirl the next. It would allow each character to get their space (albeit with a smaller issue size), but i could probably find myself buying the singles especially if they were, say, issues digitally with a slightly cheaper price. Which is what they want don't they. And this whole container line could allow for many character to properly die off i hope...

It would probably kill the writers/ artists, but maybe it could start DC properly fostering some decent new talent.

 @icelandbob

It would also give new creators a launchpad to work with, without risking a whole line on an unknown property. Currently, a handful of writers write the vast majority of books. How many books a month does Bendis write? Geoff Johns? That makes big name writers into disproportionately big fish in a teeny tiny pond. But it's a business, and the big guys know that if they get to put 'written by Warren Ellis' then a certain number of people will show up. But a similar number of people will show up to Batman just because it's a guy in a blue cape with pointy ears. You can afford to have someone screw up a little with Batman, so long as you have a writing team that can train up the new kid.

Now, I'm not sure how the artists would handle it. Those people are machines as is. I'd hate to drive comic artists to suicide. I guess you'd have a different artist for each week, or sometimes two or more artists on a book. (You illustrate plot 'a', you've got the b plot, you do the backup story art.)

Anyone remember Jason Bard? Anyone? I'll give you all a minute. Jason Bard.

No?

He was a lame detective (as in, "he had a bum leg and walked with a cane", not the usual DC definition of "lame") and he dated Barbara Gordon. As far as I know, he survivied the Crisis (the first one, the only one that really matters). He used to appear regularly in the Bat-Family books. Hell, he was practically the model for the Gotham Precinct stuff that has revitalized the Batman franchise (and never, ever forget that it is a franchise and must be treated as such.) and he dated Batgirl. While she could still walk.

DC has always excelled at the anthology format and I approve of Jon Wake's plans.

Too bad he's not running DC.

Who knows, it might boost DC comics to new heights or whatever. @Jon Wake I had a similar idea. Less books, weekly, stories that end, but I'd take it one step one step beyond and not put out books staring that character for 6 months or however long it takes to craft a really good story. They have enough of a cast of characters to draw from.

I wouldn't bother trying to compete with the internet for quick fix "disposable" stimulation. Absence also builds anticipation. Part of the reason reboots/deaths work is because 6 months or a year later you get to hype up the return. Why not do it in a non-cheesy, soap opera-esque fashion and give the creators more time to work to boot?

He has a metal spike goatee, which must make nodding sort of difficult.

The Superman reminds me of - I think - the Project Rooftop remake contest. And one of the points that the judges made there was that it's silly to make his costume look armored because with Superman, whatever he's wearing is guaranteed to be less durable than he is.

Since I've always approached comics with the mindset that the only canon continuity is whatever is needed to explain what is going on in the exact issue I am reading, this whole thing doesn't phase me much. To be honest, aside from the stuff Morrison was doing with Batman and a couple miscellaneous titles, there wasn't a great deal of interesting stories going on in the DCU. Clearing out the muck and starting fresh is something that should and does happen on a regular basis and, yes, we're losing some cool things because of it. But we're getting Cornell on a bunch of great titles, Morrison on Superman, he still gets to finish his Batman arc, Jeff Lemire on Animal Man, JL Dark... Lots of goodies coming from this. And, to be honest, the moment they announced the Flash accidentally running into an alternate universe, we should have known the jig was up.

You know what happened the first time the Flash did something like this? That's right. Crisis on Infinite Earths. We should feel lucky that red fucker didn't blow up the other 51 universes with his little jaunt this time. Same god damn Flash, too. He has a terrible problem doing things like this.

Here's something I've been wondering for the last couple days. They have Constantine, Swamp Thing and the rest of the Vertigo heroes back under the DCU brand. But still, there's something I miss. Do you think DC's plan was to have a Watchmen #1 on shelves next September? I think that would make sense, considering the rumours of a Watchmen sequel a few months ago.

Also, the lack of a Floronic Man #1 is simply disappointing.

Do you think DC's plan was to have a Watchmen #1 on shelves next September?

I doubt it. A new Watchmen comic would go nowhere. The first couple issues would sell like hotcakes, but then everyone would remember that what makes Watchmen really matter is that it was a brilliant exploration and comment on the medium that was totally relevant at the time and is unnecessary today. In the long run I think the DC bean counters can probably figure out that continued sales of the original TPB are worth far more than a few sudden sales blips from a sequel that's doomed to fail unless they can convince Alan Moore to write it.

Only if the ads are any good.

Agreed. I think it'll take a lot of effort to not only overcome the perceptions of comics as a kids' thing or the purview of stereotypes like the Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons as well as build enough interest for people to shell out $2.50 US a pop and make them keep coming back each month.

Now, with the e-versions, if they set up a monthly subscription that's cheaper than the dead tree print copies that could work better as it takes a lot less effort to download the latest edition than it does to get in your car, drive to your local store, and pick up your copies, especially if you weren't already doing that.

I just can't see this being a good idea. As much as comic fans are always talking about wanting something new, the fact is people want comics like a ratty old pair of comfortable slippers. I do hope it works out for them but really I can see a bunch of old fans becoming grumpy because they are not the characters as they remember them (or the series they like have been gotten rid of or fundamentally changed eg Secret Six, Birds of Prey). It does seem very 90s. I know DC is not matching it with Marvel in terms of the top 100 etc but I don't know if this is the right way to solve it. I suppose as long as the stories are good then they will hook the readers in and they will build up the titles just like Marvels titles like The Mighty Th...oh um Runawa...ok...Captain Britain and M....GODDAMIT

I remember several months ago Vertigo putting out an commercial for Fables. I am sure DC was using that as a guage to see if it was worth the money, and it must have been. Also, it think it is a good move to let people know, who are not aware, were they could go to buy the comics. Although, as I think this I am reminded that Barnes and Noble are now selling some comics day and date, I would hate for the commercials to be B&N specific.

As to the content, I hope the best for DC, my purchasing of their titles have been dwindling of late. Also, good luck to Flash not dying a slow death like every other title that Johns leaves (see his last Flash run for example).

Wandering into the realms of pure speculation: Perhaps the logic is that, if DC are publishing a character who acts more like the Siegel & Shuster Superman, they have to make him look different to avoid some qualification for derivativeness?

If anyone has more insight/knowledge of the S&S vs. DC saga, I'd be very interested to hear.

Also, continuing on the Supertheme, the two things I actually like about the redesigns so far are: The bio-robotic Superboy (I have a soft spot for non-Clark Kent Superboys, though) and the fact that Supergirl and Superman now both have matching S-shield-shaped belt buckles... Wandering into the realms of pure speculation: Perhaps the logic is that, if DC are publishing a character who acts more like the Siegel & Shuster Superman, they have to make him look different to avoid some qualification for derivativeness?

I was wondering something along the same lines. There was an article I read the other day involving the movie rights and that after the 2012 Superman movie, it's entirely possible that we may see 2 different movie franchises, due to split movie rights. The S&S version would have the outfit and original abilities, such as leaping buildings in a single bound, etc., whereas the Warner/DC version would have rights to any later developments of the character by DC (I believe Lex Luthor was created by DC).

That said, a few hours ago my brain started mulling over the possibility that this whole new version might be in part out of prep for when those rights shift. No clue about the comic rights themselves, but if they change the primary character now to better reflect what they'll have the movie rights to later, then in theory people may be more receptive to their version that will appear in any movies once the rights split.

I'm probably talking out of my ass on this one, but I'd like to do comics like porn. Think about porn circa 1990 or so. You had adult bookstores, movie houses, mailing lists and the like. Back in 1990, do you really think there'd have been a huge uptick in people going to those places due to an advertising campiagn? I'm thinking no.

The thing for me is that perception tends to be reality. The likelihood of shifting American culture away from the comics are for children/cat-piss men is about as likely as rehabilitating the swastika as a symbol. You're just not going to convince most people who aren't already into comics to try them in the traditional sense.

Now think about porn today. It exploded because of the web. Hell, as I understand it, many of the conveniences like high graphics and secure purchasing were developed for the web at the behest of the porn industry. So, make getting comics convenient, inexpensive and anonymous. And if somebody wants a collection they can order a POD trade paperback. Like that. Sure, keep the LCS, keep the monthlies if they earn their keep, but overall gradually shift the nature of production to a digital form.

Some of us d oneed it as much (or more than) porn, and the rise of tablet pcs and micropaiment is a blessing for this field. You start a series (say the walking dead, since they're already using it) at 2$ per issue, it's no big deal, only 2 bucks. You finish it? Buy the next one, even if you're on the bus, in a lunch break, at 2AM at home, it's there, and the one after that is also there. First thing you know, you're up to date (and it just cost you near 200$ worth of comics...)

And it does not render the paper comics useless, as they can still be bought for the feel of it, and to "convert" others to the media. Plus you'll never go to a con and get your ipad signed... ;)

And I really hope it would make writers rich, since you guys clearly deserve it for the kind of entertainment you provide us ;)

@Johnjones- Speaking as someone from a younger generation (Gen Y or whatever name we're given) the idea of comics has been drastically reformed. With video games, tv shows and movies, the characters that appear in american comics are a norm and are very much loved. The Walking Dead gets passed around like hotcakes and even women (haha for having to even say it this way) are at the least not adverted to the idea of reading a comic especially when they'll happily watch a movie or tv show based on the same character

It's not like America suddenly gained a compulsion to whack-off circa 1995 or so. It's that porn became cheap, easily available and anonymous. Suddenly, you didn't have to make the drive of shame to the adult bookstore, hoping to Christ you weren't seen by somebody you knew. Suddenly, you could sit at your desk in the privacy of your home (or job or whatever), send some credit info and get anything you wanted to see right then and there.

Do that for comics and you may well find that people "need" them a lot more than you thought.

It's that porn became cheap, easily available and anonymous.

Actually it was that the DOJ effectively abandoned porn prosecutions during the Clinton years and the Bush DOJ found it nearly impossible to convict anyone on porn obscenity charges. That, combined with the internet, created a porn bubble. Which, like the comic and internet bubbles of the 1990s, popped a long time ago. I suspect that if comics went online to the degree porn has many people will still prefer them in the three-and-four panel helpings typical of newspapers.

Bleeding Cool has about 90% of their stuff covering the relaunch. The remaining 10% surrounds Rob Granito's whereabouts.

I honestly love Morrison's stuff on Batman Incorporated, but not really a DC fan. I'm way into Marvel's stuff, but hope this "FEAR ITSELF" thing gets done and over with in a hurry.
Because a lot of these relaunches aren't relaunches. The Green Lantern and Batman books aren't breaking continuity step, for example.

Exactly--so far the only one that looks like is going to get a full-fledged reboot is Firestorm by Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver...and you might be able to count Wonder Woman, but the whole point of the Odyssey jacket era was to fix/change the timestream back for her, so I don't know if that counts. Morrison's probably going to do a lot of interesting things with Superman's past with Action, but considering the guy's the king of "continuity as a living organism and everything counts," I don't think it'll fare too badly.

But yeah, I'm into this--sad that some of my favorite comics, like Secret Six, are being nixed for it, but it looks like they're going to be doing a lot more interesting, varied stuff, including stuff that isn't straight-up super-heroics (which, I haven't read the whole tread, but I'm sure pleases our current Overlord to some extent). It's kinda scary--there's so many new things I want to try, I don't think I can afford it all.

Kurt Busiek over at the Comic Book Resources forum, while not scooping any dirt, did give some solid common sense reasoning as to why the cat explanation doesn't work:

Keep in mind that if there really was a problem with an issue because it opened with a kitten-rescuing scene, it would be easier, less controversial and more cost-effective to redraw the scene than to turf the whole issue.

And it's not as if the folks at DC don't know that. Redrawing scenes is not a bizarre or unusual idea.

Turfing an issue over a scene with a kitten, though? It takes a special kind of dopiness for someone who knows much about comics production to buy that explanation -- or try to sell it.

Particularly in the same breath as they try to sell the idea that DC was so embarrassed at the thought of something as corny as Superman saving a kitten that they replaced it ... with a sentimental story about Krypto the Superdog.

I'm not going to discuss why the issue was replaced, but I can tell you that it had nothing to do with any kittens.

I sympathize with Chris Roberson (hey, I've been there), but glad my story finally saw print. I expect his will, too, in time.

Eddie Campbell is blogging again (w00t) and commented on comic cancellations and relaunches:

*****
My local paper had an article about the long running Uncanny X-MEN being put to rest. It was very salutational. The press pays so little interest to comic books that it doesn't realize how these things work. They're just closing down the one X-men comic so they can start up again with two. It will be a pincer tactic. One goes downwind of the readers with the bucket of shit, while the other creeps up behind and holds their mouths open for the first one to drop it all in. They could just have handed out knives and forks.
*****
