Beautiful work from everyone. I am becoming a better artist seeing such a diverse set of art. Missed the supergirl redo, I had a few ideas for that one but too busy.

Took a short absence to focus on my new website http://www.fallensunasylum.org. Still doing daily 1/2 hour lunch sketches though, my theme this week is Game of Thrones. Here is Khal Drogo and Arya Stark. About to start either Jon Snow or one of the queens. Loving that show.

"Khal Drogo" - his impassioned speech from this weeks episode gave me chills.

"Arya Stark and her sword lessons." Drew this one from a photo I found online.

Going to try and get back to nightly "drawing each other thread" images. Those are fun.

Lovely start to the month from everyone. I've been too busy working on my latest animation to make or post any art here, but I still want to play, damnit.
This was a quick flyer I whipped up for my girlfriend's (amazing) play, mostly using Alchemy then thrown together in Illustrator.

Gimme about 2 weeks and I should have an animation to show you...

Felt like drawing the Mandarin after a long day of drawing... other stuff.

Done in PS CS5. I used to hate drawing in Photoshop, but CS5 has fixed a lot of the issues I had and I'm sure using a cintiq probably makes things go easier since the last time I really tried was when I was using a tablet.

@no cutting time what materials did you use for that piece? Spent about ten minutes admiring your markings. Beautiful work and from everyone else as well.

Here are two more days of Game of Thrones lunch sketches, I am digging that show. Only thing on TV I take the time to watch uninterupted. Thanks for looking.

I am finally hitting a point with my drawings where I feel no resistance. Its very freeing, I have been fighting against something for many years.

Queen cersei, still figuring out my voice on this one. Had a few distractions while drawing this.

The name says it all: it's the story of that Venetian Libertarian, magician, scholar, swindler and lover but then as a cat always in heat.

A buddy of mine and great illustrator Dave Stokes and I had another character sketch Throwdown, the subject was chosen by a thrid party to make it more interesting. Spiderman 2099 was picked, and here was my take:

I'm thinking I might drop some bright red and blue inks on the figure, just for fun, always did like that costume.

Cheers Kevin, I appreciate that man. The wet into wet doesn't always turn out quite right, but it's always a nice surprise when it does ;)
I decided to glaze it with some coloured ink , but I think I preferred it in black and white.

@mojo that blood stain rorshach blotted into Deadpool. I'm reading too many superhero books I think. Rogue is mopey I think still. Though not as mopey as her Bachalo/Carey hayday, which I loved. Definitely a turn from the rural pastiche she was in my childhood. Though I like that version too, with the bomber jacket deal and the head band. I like when she's written as kind of an anti-establishment black sheep of X-men who runs little bastard x-groups against cyke's wishes. More punk adolescent than Wolverine's crochety rebellions.

@everyone: June 2011, the BEST art threat yet, and the mont's barely starting!

Here's a little practice sketch. My tablet's still on the bork but someone has promised to send me some spare Wacom nibs (I just hope they get around to it soon) so I started various character sketches and practice for the big comics project I'll be doing :D

black Biro/ballpoint on squared/graph paper (blue lines though so I mostly edited it in photoshop when scanning)

In case it is unclear, the hair is white and the hammer's powers are fire based :)
Basically I'm reviving my 2008 webcomic in new form and that' what I'm practicing for (and drawing characters from)

@mojokingbee - Thanks! I always dig your work. No custom brushes. It was a combination of scrawl shapes and speed shapes in Alchemy for the tree. The rest was Illustrator and a brush wash I'd scanned.

@mercurialblonde, The rogue drawing is beautiful. Sometimes the best work comes from the warm down, I've found. There's a definite air of anti-establishment in it.

@Aurora Borealis, The motion is mighty in that picture. I look forward to reading your comics, your writing is mighty from what I've seen, you'll have to let us know when they're on the go again!

Here's one of the fairy (Sidh - [phonetically] Shee) characters from my Irish Mythology stuff. He has a short life in the tale, unfortunately, but is pivotal to the development of the character from my post at the end of the May Artist's thread. He plays lulling music then burns men's towns and villages to the ground, but is well-liked in the Fair folk realms.

Duke Leto from Dune

A friend of mine really liked the Dune sketches I did a few weeks back and so wanted Duke Leto for her birthday, drew this during Sac Con over the weekend. I did a few others but do not have access to a scanner right now so will post soon. @initiatezao, I forgot to say how awesome that Dune image was. I was caught up in the gif idea. I love your shtyle with the hatching and his eyes are spot on. Great hair too.

@amalgamatedbiscuit, Your mountain climber doesn't look too enthusiastic - i'd be the same -, great drawing. Your watercolour one is really rich, suits your style a lot. Nice characters.

@mojokingbee, Sanity meter, I like it. I love the jacket on the first guy. Do you make your own (Photoshop?) brushes? The girl is mighty, great texture and contrast, was she inspired by something in particular?

@Richard Pace, I'm a big fan of Vampirella. I think she is to illustration like an old standard in music and these are particularly delightful versions. I still have to work very hard to be as consistent in fleshing out characters the way those cards are, it always humbles me. Thanks for sharing.

@256, Most interesting. Really geographic, could see it right away. Is this part of a series or is it for a special project?

I did these last two as a brain down, after wrestling with various nicks and nacks on getting my obelisk comic finished(just lettering and pdf making left and I'll be ready to send it off):

I'm really enjoying the backgrounds in these, and kinda want to make a comic with backgrounds like this. The Robot smashing one, I modeled those shapes on the Tower thoth card. And the other just sort of became the inside of a space ship.

This is an idea I've had bouncing around for a bit and decided to try something other than my usual "Pencil/Ink/Scan/Color" It absolutely did not save any time.

Creature design for hire. I call him Mr. Flipper. Someone paying me to design mutant shark men is like someone paying me to drink and make mistakes.

I took a wee break from my brushes and ink yesterday and did this digital cover piece for a soon to be released ebook written by Paul Wartenberg, called The Hero Cleanup Protocol. Drawn and Manga Studio Debut and coloured in Photoshop. My wife Erika did the text bits.

@lordofthejungle…I use mostly painterX and recently SBP. Fancy brushes effects were made using image hose brush. The girl was just my attempt on doing something cheese-cake-y..kinda…I make stuff as I go along. Love the expression of Eyepatch Goll Mac Morna..badass, yes he is.

I can do 1-2 pages a day when I’m making the comics ( 9- 18 panels) I make them up directly with black ink so I don’t waste anytime with pencils or scripts (HAH) Thanks for the Prolific comment, coming from Mr. Prolific-Daily-King-Bee himself it’s a high compliment

No comics today instead I made 24 hand painted t-shirts for a local clothing company …

Mojo - I dig manga Studio as a drawing program, but I prefer to work traditionally whenever possible. I find MS to be a pretty great little toy for doing breakdowns and tweaking sketches at the rough stage - correcting proportion and scale, move things around on a page etc without messing things up or having to erase anything. But I'll take my brushes and ink over computer art any day (even if i can't always get the same nifty effects).
I love the life in all of your sketches, and it's great to see you post them up on twitter too.

@HEY - straight up, you are an art MONSTER, sir. The size and scale and sheer volume of your work baffles me with every post. It's clear that you really enjoy what you do, and that you HAVE to do it. Pretty awesome and inspirational, I must say.

JP Stargazer- fantastic drawing, really lovely.

A news man for one of the local papers in my city did a small interview/article on me a while back, and since then we've become pretty good friends. He's a big Green Lantern fan (and a fan of my work) so it was a pleasure to do this portrait of him (commissioned by one of his mates from the newspaper).

Amazing stuff Mojokingbee! Love that Venom! I'm not sure if your question was aimed at me or not, but those portraits in ink and wash typically take anywhere from 2- 6 hours, depending on how complex (and my ability to achieve a likeness in the roughs stage).

@ mojo- I like the VENOM! ( the brush on tees was tricky I just went with the messy edges but a really wet brush and a lot of patience will get you nice clean and consistent lines)

Hey Mojo... the 4th Doctor illustration started as an ink sketch on paper... it was scanned and then re-inked using Photoshop. The scarf textures and the background lines were exported from Manga Studio and then distorted and layered and moved around in Photoshop.

Here's a project that now I can share with the general public. I did the design work for a CD from UK artist Frank Joshua, who contacted me on a recommendation from Thomas Dolby (I know, right...). Frank did this album really as a labor of love, and it shows in the music. Kind of a mix of Prefab Sprout, Frazier Chorus and folk, with a little electronics added in. It's also immensely catchy, and had me hooked from the word "go". Music for a summer day, driving around with no particular agenda, which isn't a bad thing.

If you have the time, please check out some of these links and enjoy this talented musician's work (and the marginally talented bloke who he got to design the whole package).

So, ladies and gents...I'm looking for an artist to collab with and this seems like the best place to pull from. You guys blow me away every single time I come here. I have a bunch of written projects that I really don't have the time to draw and a few of them require a style outside of my wheelhouse. I'll go into details over e-mail, but If your taste falls towards the weird and oozes black humor I'd like to hear from you. here's another inky wash piece I finished today. I lost control of the wet on wet background, so the plumes of smoke coming out of the flyer didn't really work out for me. Oh well, maybe next time. Gonna lay some transparent coloured inks over this now- I love the insane green and purples of the Goblin, so it should be fun.

The artwork this month came out of the gate awe-inspiring. Just fantastic work this month thus far.

I am working on a personal project this summer. I cannot think of any better group of people to inquire about design then you Art thread machines. I would love your feedback on these costumes. As you can see, there’s not much to them and they are flesh-tone. The general idea is that this is the costume you meet the characters in. There’s formal-ware and the colors change depending on a few factors.

Think of them as the uniform. What are your thoughts?

@dorkmuffin; Love that shirt design. Did you render that as an .ai file? You can feel those strokes. I’m envious.
@mojokingbee; I had considered that. I’m keeping the color families as separate as possible. The male lead being in the brown. The females being in the pink. I am going to have to eventually do some print tests. I hadn’t considered that too much but now it’s on the must do list. I am insanely flattered by the compliment of it being an elegant design. I just thought circular split-zipper pockets were a future-need.
@imaginarypeople; Your pieces are a damn highlight every time a new one emerges. I want to steal that energy and bottle it up. I’d make a mint selling it.

@mojokingbee, I gotta ask, waht's your process? Do you sketch with a brownish/purpleish brush instead of black or you add some kind of filter after sketching?? I think I got you figured out, but I have to admit that I don't, too.

Yes, I'm cheating, I'm trying to squeeze some answers from you people to use it in that Superman I posted a couple of days back. I certainly am a very unsure one, regarding photoshop colouring. I've tried a couple of times before and still I can't seem to hit in the right key.

@JP Stargazer...It's all digital these days for me. I work in black lines and have a colour layer above set to screen to tint it. I do this mostly because digital black onscreen looks too harsh for me and a tad distracting/painful on my eyes...and you know, it does look a little better. No filters in the end result, just adding colourised or overlay layers on top. Anything not totally black in the drawing with be tinted as a result. It's not too fancy and not much of a secret technique. Will have to learn to light things properly and draw straight lines next.

Here's a Lino cut I did today of John Dillinger's mug shot. I will post the print once I get it done....tomorrow?

This new Lino material they have is very soft. I assume the thinking with that is that it will be easier to cut, which it isn't, however it needs to be pasted on to something flat or it could make a mess out of your print job. So I glued it to a piece of foamcore.

I feel a little embarrassed posting here, there is some beautiful, jubbly lovely, kick ass work on here that blows my mind every time I look.

So firstly, here's the final artwork for the cover of this year's Continuum Con in Melbourne, which @m1k3y kindly recommended me for.
I really enjoyed working on this one. Inks, watercolours, a bit of Alchemy in the background.

I also promised to post my final animation for the semester, so here it is. Bit of ridiculous romp that I'll be reworking for an upcoming competition. All hand drawn pencil on paper, backgrounds hastily painted watercolours. Ludicrously, I did the soundtrack myself, acapella. Vimeo embed foils me yet again...

I got some copic markers in today and did this in like half an hour to sort of test them out...no pencils--I think it looks indistinguishable from a lot of my other inked stuff, but was a lot more intuitive. I like the two brushes they have on the markers:

@EVERYONE ELSE: I can't comment on each of your pieces separately but they're all great! It's always quite inspiring to visit this thread and see all the different styles and approaches.

This is from yesterday, the idea was a mask where gas canisters form sort of a jolly roger/skull n bones.

And this is from the day before, basically me practicing poses and wrinkles picked from hongkong/wuxia comics

Also, from couple of days ago, a sketch for one of the Amen City Chronicles characters

The first and the third of these are pretty much how I envision the artstyle of this thing once I get to do it.

And also, this is again somewhat older but...

This above story is from Coilstar Illustrated #2 and if anyone would be so kind to pick up a copy from Indyplanet it'd help me greatly because right now I'm totally broke and the job market sucks so badly I can't even get a job in a supermarket (the monitor factory I worked at fired about 2/3rd of their people and that took care of all the job openings that were available).
There's also #1 with my older short comics and some other older things, all of which you can find listed here

And big thanks to anyone who does so (so that I don't have to sell my Moebius comics to pay my bills as I know I won't be able to buy them back).

Yay for prints on Whitechapel! Are you talking about his eye that's on my left as a viewer? Or the eye that's on his left? Because if it's MY left, don't touch it. It looks lovely. The other one looks to have a bit of a pickle syndrome with the gauge marks, but it doesn't bother me either.
Also, that white linoleum looks interesting. Part of me looks at it and wants to try carving on it, but I think that may just be because it reminds me a bit of sintra, which is my preferred relief printing material.

@kperkins - Why yes, it is. I was given the idea for a gonzo pirate flag and just sort of ran with it.
@NeilFord - Thanks! I liked the way the eyes came out.
@mojokingbee - Well, it was supposed to be a pirate flag, but I think it works more as a tattoo design. I've had a few people say they'd like to have it as a tattoo, but I'm calling dibs on that (and for the person I designed it for). :)

I missed the Malcolm McLaren Justice League R/R and decided against seeing Green Lantern this weekend so I did my own boring redesign / colouring experiment.

Normally I take ages getting rid of the artefacts of scanning and masking, but I left some of them in this time as I think the effect's sorta interesting. Sorta.

@mercurialblonde: Well, our Moebius comics aren't that pricey yet. Unless it's Incal or Airtight Garage, both of which were printed in very limited editions over here. If I sold one (not that I would if I had any) I could pay my internet bill for the entire year.
@VertigoJones: Thank you. The idea is obviously not a new one but it sure helps doing silent comics.
@Edwin: What is that yellow thing punching out Batman? Cause it sure looks familiar but I can't remember where I saw it.
@photomagex: Thanks. Although the more I look at it, the more annoyed I am with the inconsistency of panel borders used throughout. But I guess they work for respective pages.
@COOP: that is one scary self portrait. It's also amazing!
@initiatezao: That's NOT a lunch sketch, that's a lunch masterpiece. It should be promoted at least to dinner.
@harris-ejaz: the "bumpy" pants feel a bit odd at first but overall the piece is amazing.

Man, I've missed out on most of this month, though I kind of like being away for a while and sitting down and sifting through this thread. Been swamped with freelance gigs. This is something I busted out this past weekend while I was awaiting some marching orders. Sort of a proof of concept for a comic idea I've been kicking around for a while.

hey Mojo... most of these existed already in my sketchbook... the boy-faced deer was redrawn and inked in Manga Studio and the monkey/shark was 2 different illustrations spliced together in Photoshop for the t-shirt. Threadless is interesting... all of the designs got a lot of views... not so good is the bar chart they reveal at the end of the voting period that shows just how many people voted zero.... merde.
