1. For film, it's all about the chemicals that create the image on the strip. Some are more vivid than others. Some are more accurate than others. Some are in monochrome.

2. For digital, it's all about the settings. Some will work better than others depending upon the lighting and atmosphere conditions. And some chips are barely there.

3. Filters can help you compensate for most of the above,

4. Your brain does most of your seeing for you. It comes with built in filters, light level toggles, and auto white balance. That whole system can't always be trusted.

5. Sometimes your lens shifts color or distorts light. You can't trust anything in photography. Strange men with Leicas and a fondness for escalators even less so.

The dirty secret of photography is that you're faking it most of the time, and hiding what you couldn't fake. If you're not enhancing reality with special films, digital settings, lens filters, lights, reflectors, make up, body paint, Vaseline, airbrushes or Photoshop you're going to be spending a lot of time going, "Jeeze. I really suck. Photographer X is always putting out such great images and I'm not..."

What I'm saying is: Don't be ashamed to tweak things in post. Ansel Adams tweaked everything he did in the darkroom and he's the most famous rock photographer in the world. Nothing looks amazing right out of the camera, that is the dirty secret that makes a pro's photos looks better and different. Photoshop layers. Learn to use the curves with masking layers and you will be able to have total control over exposure for every part of your image.
What you say about Ansel Adams is true but to say that he tweaked his images in the darkroom does not do justice to the insane level of control he exerted over his images. He invented the Zone system of photography to get those rich images, his time in the darkroom was an extension of taking the photograph. When you shoot Zone you have to calculate for exposure in every part of your image and place all the elements into the 11 Zones ranging from pure back to pure white. This negative then requires special darkroom techniques to bring the photograph to completion. He also took ridiculously long exposures with a large format box camera mounted to the back of his pickup truck. He would open the shutter when he saw light he liked falling on his subject and close it when the light was just kind of blah. Some of his exposures are hours long. my problem is that once the photos come out of the camera, i'm at a loss as to how to make them look any better than they do. i don't have an established aesthetic like, say, Robin does, so when i Photoshop it ends up just looking inconsistent. i wish someone would take my photos and show me what they could look like.... *ahem*

That said, I do 90% of my work in Adobe Lightroom and I use a crapload of different creative presets (my favorites are the film emulators I picked up at presetsheaven.com for free that let me mimic the look of fuji, ilford, agfa, and kodak films including Kodachrome). I only use Photoshop for the real heavy lifting such as editing elements in or out, color balancing, perspective correction, sharpening, and print. I make extensive use of curves adjustment layers and masks to tweak elements individually for brightness and contrast and color. I do a lot of work on small details to get the thing the way I want and I try not to make it look like I have messed with it.

I am happy to share tricks, it is my firm belief that all photographers should share resources and ideas. I am in the midst of a massive edit underway since noon and rambling here has actually been kind of good for thinking about my workflow. Reliance on auto-everything digital cameras gives a false sense of ability - turn off all those features, and set aperture and shutter speed manually, and select your own focus, don't let the camera decide for you. You're gonna get some crap photos (a LOT of crap photos) but eventually, you will start to get consistent results, and really understand WHY it's working, rather than letting a chip in a camera do the work for you. Discipline is the name of the game - always work on proper exposure and composition, and if you don't get it right in a particular shot, THROW IT AWAY. (I NEVER crop photos, for example, get the composition you want when you take the shot!) I feel this is a strong image. You all may not agree and that's fine. This had to be cropped down from the original because I was using a prime lens, in a thick crowd, pointing at the sky. I had to compose quickly and move on because otherwise I was going to get run over by a gang of parents with strollers.

If I left it as was, I'd have more sky and a few skulls. Those would have taken away from the drummer and his pretty awesome expression leaving it a weaker image.

Though I do agree with the idea of being more selective in what you show to people. It's easier to maintain the illusion you're competent when no one sees your finger hanging around the edges of the photo.

And pet peeve: By Crom, HDR is only good in a very few select situations! It's like Auto-tune. Can be done well. Then when I get back home I process the raw files with a variety of intents. Sometimes I process to try to produce exactly the shot I imagined during the capture. Other times I process to turn the shot into something completely new -- often an image which I did not see or imagine until viewing the capture on the computer monitor.

Regardless, if you shoot raw you're going to use the darkroom to make at a minimum the same series of decisions on saturation, white balance, sharpness, etc. that the camera algorithms would have in producing the jpg or tif. The only exception is when I do astrophotography, because no matter how dark it is when I'm shooting, a ten minute exposure is going to soak up whatever ambient light there is and make the black parts of the sky not quite black any more, so I'll tweak the white balance to bring it back down.

Which is not to say that I am making any sort of value judgement on other peoples' process. It's just my philosophy for my own stuff.

I sit on the fence with the 'no cropping' idea, I think it's a great aspiration to want to compose entirely in camera (and I respect Cartier Bresson's hardcoreness!), and it's what I try for most of the time, just sometimes it doesn't work - particularly on some of the floral macros I do where I might be photographing something so small it won't adequately fill the frame. Or I might want to crop to a square for a particular impact. Or there might be a distracting detail that I can't remove without breaking the plant or its surrounding plants, but I can crop out afterwards. But I will always shoot mindful of the final crop - I can't be bothered trying to rescue stuff, I think COOP's entirely right on that.

I also had a really hard time coming to terms with post-processing. I learned to take pictures primarily with slide film and when I switched to digital I went through a long period of thinking all my pictures were rubbish because they didn't look like Velvia no matter how great the light was when I shot them, it was ages before I grew to treat digital images like negatives rather than transparencies. Depressingly, most of my creative endeavours have been hamstrung by these sorts of stupid mental hangups...

I think we can all agree that the folks on either side who feel they are superior because of that choice are GIANT douchebags.

I'm sure I've posted before on here about this, but I remember with glee an incident where somebody posted a couple of Cartier Bressons on a photo nerd forum asking for feedback and a bunch of these people nitpicked the images to death (because they weren't cropped, weren't sharp in places etc etc). I tend to do little post processing, but that has mostly to do with the fact that it feels like homework and I do photography for fun. When it's not fun, I don't really do any. I'd love to see what someone who is brilliant at working a photo do stuff with mine just to see how much better they could be. I respect both sides and those in between - they all create some great photos/art. Right now, I'm learning to be pickier with what I keep.

That said, I love that this thread can tolerate the fact there are a variety of opinions as to how the medium should be approached and that there is respect for everyone's different techniques. If you want to understand how rare and valuable something like that is go weigh in on a topic over on photo.net and watch the hacks there fucking shred each other to pieces over questions less sensitive than these. Forum questions asking about what type of film was used or how much push or pull was applied can result in eviscerating comments aimed squarely at the yarbles.

@Alana, nice work again!

@dispophoto, I agree that the constraints of how much editing is acceptable in photojournalism can be a drag. It is why I quit. Crop and color balance are the only acceptable forms of editing. I think that restraints can be liberating when you are working because they force you to be creative and to do more with less but I found the restraints of traditional photojournalism to be too stringent for me to bear.

@Coop, I am also a huge fan of Cartier-Bresson. His work is amazing, his frames are all in camera right to the edge and the black lines around it are a signal that no cropping has been done. The fact that he achieved those results with a Rangefinder camera is all the more impressive once you have used one and know just how damn hard it is to get anything right. I know that you favor his camera of choice and your results are also pretty damn amazing, my friend. The shots presented here are no exception. Also, I have been digging the Fuji-Roids, more please!
My only problem with Cartier-Bresson is that he took his philosophy of non-editing so far that he never once worked in a darkroom. He never even developed his own film. He worked with the same darkroom technician for 40 years and told him exactly what he wanted and never set foot in the darkroom himself. He was also independently wealthy and somewhat resented by his peers at Magnum who could not afford to self-fund trips to Russia, China, and India on their own dime and then sell the pictures to Time Magazine at a loss. He represents for me a purity of technique that is available only to those that can afford to be pure above all other considerations. I love his work but I always remember that his philosophy surrounding it was a luxury.

My hero is WeeGee the famous. He was a Romanian-born New Yorker and an unrepentant bastard.

On an unrelated note, I agree with your take on @William.George's picture. The lines do exactly what a photograph is supposed to.

Also, fuck the rule of thirds with a chainsaw.

For myself, I go back and forth on all of these issues of philosophy. I always shoot manual, never auto. I try to get everything I see within the frame that I capture and I shoot enough to make sure that my ass is covered with plenty of variety to choose the best shot. I try to employ a light hand in editing, mostly curves and color. However, I do love my Lightroom presets to make some shots that I feel are sort of 'meh' feel more like what it was that I was going for when I pressed the shutter. Often I find myself choosing the technical best photographs for my early proofs and as I live with the shoot for longer I revisit and find things I missed the first time around because I dismissed them out-of-hand because of a minor (ok, sometimes major) flaw and I take them into Photoshop. These frequently become my favorites and I get huge reactions from people and I am then ashamed to admit that they were rejects that I 'shopped extensively to achieve an entirely different look in order to salvage a shot I flubbed when I pressed the shutter.

There is no right way to do this thing, in my humble opinion. You just do, and then you do some more, If no one tells you to stop and in fact people start offering to pay you to continue then you do some more and you consider yourself incredibly fucking lucky. Someday it all makes sense when you see a clear thru line in your contact sheets. Until then your opinion of your own work is just conjecture, same as everybody else's. I cannot find a way to change the black point on the sky so it's not so washed out without it making the landscape too dark to see using GIMP (I could cut the landscape out, adjust the sky, and then paste the landscape back, but it would look so obviously fake that I'd hate myself). @Alanna, nice as your inanimate work is I would say keep going with live subjects. That work is really good and you capture some great moments and expressions. It feels like you have a connection to all the folks you are shooting, they trust you and you do right by them with your pics cuz the folks look awesome and happy and natural. That is a tough thing to pull off and you seem to be doing damn near effortlessly so I would say keep doing that(!) because you are clearly good at it.

@Devid LeJeune, you will never be able to get the sky dark and the foreground readable in the same shot if you are shooting at night. If you want both, go out around dusk when there is still some light in the sky. There won't be as many stars but they should read and your foreground will still be lgible and not merely black shapes. Just wait til after sunset, blue hour is your perfect time.

Thanks about my own shot, I rented a tilt / shift lens for an interior shoot and since I billed it to the client I figured I may as well get the full measure of use out of it and lugged a tripod, cable release, camera, and lens downtown on my bike after shooting a concert. I must have took this around 1:30 AM pissed as a fart and drunkenly riding around lower manhattan with 5000 dollars worth of camera gear in my courier pack. Thankfully no one thinks I am worth mugging because I look scary and/or broke.

That is what I did with this photo. There was no way to get the fence lit up without the sunrise washing out or a nice sunrise without a very dark fence, therefore I combined the best of two shots.

If it makes you feel any better, my copy of CS3 was paid for, registered, turned out to be grey market with a US serial number, Adobe chose to be total arseholes and it indirectly ended up with me blowing up an expensive PC powerpack and accidentally formatting my backup drive while trying to get the authorisation crap working. I hate them with the power of a thousand suns.
