    I'm not a fan of the super sweet or bitter beers, my go to beers right now are La Chouffe or Leffe Blond, and occasionally a Hoegaarden.

    German weizen beers are awesome as well, a Franziskaner is always good.

    @sleestak, I actually asked a member of a top brewery for advice on how to ship beer internationally. Since post is ilegal and the other methods are expensive. His response? "put something else on the customs sheet".
    @Jim, that other one would have been Blanche de Chamblay, another really nice one with them. And sadly, the giant bottles I know and love are gone from this province. There are the regular bottles in this ONE freakin' store I found though. You're right, it's not the same. But...if it's all you have.
    @Verus, Leffe Blond is a really good one and it was advised to me once to squeeze a bit of lemon in to a Hoegaarden. I might do that at some point.

    @oldhat - Years ago, when I was brewing regularly, I sent a few bottles to a friend in Australia, completely ignorant of the legality of the situation. Shouldn't be too hard to remain willfully ignorant and "put something else" on the sheet to share the beer love.

    For me wheat or non- filtered beers. Erdinger, Schneider Weisse, Paulaner or the Franziskaner above are some nice ones. Also Amboss beer, brewed in Zurich is quite nice.

    I favor dark and/or bitter: Arrogant Bastard (or their seasonal Double Bastard), Stone's Smoked Porter, any Lagunitas IPA...on the more sweet and mellow side of things I highly recommend Sammy Smith's Tadcaster Oatmeal Stout and Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

    Also, having lived in Portland for years I have to agree with some of the earlier thoughts on Rogue - they have some ok beer but are pretty overrated.

    Trying Fullers Organic HoneyDew. I'll be honest, not my favorite, and it took me a bit to get used to, but I can see how it can be seen as a "comfort" drink.

    I've heard putting 'yeast samples' on the customs sheet is the best way to go about sending beer internationally (or even across state lines). That way you're not technically lying.

    "Hot sauce" is also a good one that's been suggested to me.

    Though perhaps for now we should drop this, as we're discussing illegal things and that makes me feel that it's against the rules.

    @Alastair - OOh, I want to hear more. Also, I'm sure you're in for a treat with the Abstrakt - I only managed to save my bottle of AB:02 for six months before my will broke, but it was delicious enough to make me feel fine about not holding out longer.

    I'm experiencing something of a love/hate relationship with Brewdog at the moment. They make beers I love, but as Lampcommander mentioned, the hipster shtick is starting to get right up my nose. Nonetheless, a good bottle of Punk IPA makes me smile - the hoppiness is nicely dry and lip smacky, but then the fruitiness kicks in and cleanses your pallette enough to make it into a good session beer. The Isle of Arran version of Paradox is also lovely - rich, fiery and butterscotchy. I'd also recommend snapping up a bottle of their single hopped Citra IPA if you ever see one - it's like summer in a glass, with loads of zesty cut grass flavours.

    Fuck it, I'm going beer shopping later.

    Had a bottle of the Derby Brewing Company's Business As Usual last night. It's great to have such a quality brewery nearby. Smells of toffee, very hoppy taste and a really smooth finish.

    There's also a brewery called Blue Monkey in the Nottingham area that I need to try out. They're opening a pub in the city centre some time soon and I'll be more than happy to scoff down their product.

    @curb i agree totally on the whole hipster thing. they are ruthless business men who pay very little for how much talent their staff has and work them to the bone. but god DAMN i love their beers. i think i've drank every single one over time and a chilled 5am saint is heaven to me.

    so... last night i drank

    Alice porter : quite heavy but incredibly flavourfull very sweet and almost fruity. a huge malt kick to it.

    newly announced yin and yang two beers that were tasty on their own but designed to be mixed and my god! i was pretty fucked up when i had it (10% beers do that to a fast drinking lightweight) but here is what i sent oldhat about it last night
    Just drank a combination of Yin imperial stout and yang ipa called imperial black ipa. Amazing. A heady aroma of cocoa and hops. Ended with bitterness of Japanese lager eh asahi and an oddly fruity mangoish tastieness. Also... Drunk


    and due to my drunkeness we had the new Avery Brown Dredge (£5.50 a bottle, eep) but wow! a 7.5% pilsner that was refreshing but so so so tasty, hoppy and bitter with a lovely crisp finish, incredibly quaffable, every summer beer should be this.

    finishing up with a couple of sink the bismarks, the uber beer like whiskey but tasty.....

    i'm not much of a writer but i've done my best :p

    oh also i forgot to say

    @OLDHAT i spoke to the arch hipster himself (martin dickie of brewdog) about thirsty wench and cross ocean beer sending and he said thy were making a big announcement about getting beers to Canadia (well, everywhere) but he's also going to do a big brewblogger promotion thing. so i passed on your email hope you don't mind. feel free to kill me

    I've been craving beer pretty much every night this week for some reason. Stress at work I guess. I've had Boulevard Pilsner (my favorite pils, I usually get it when I can't decide on something), Boulevard Tank 7, and Paulaner Heffe.

    I think I'll get a 6 pack of random bottles tomorrow, Ive been drinking the same handful of beers for a while now and need to try something new.

    @Alastair, Thank you for mentioning me! And if I get any beer out of this, I will personally kiss you when I see you in person! Glad you had a wonderful time, although I'm jealous as all hell that you had the Imperial Black IPA.

    A couple of weeks ago, having time to kill after a wedding and before the reception in Barrie, Ontario, I visited the Flying Monkey's Craft Brewery and had a nice time. Here's me talking about it on the blog.

    Last night I had Harpoon's Island Creek Oyster Stout (22oz, 5.5%) followed by Avery's The Czar Imperial Stout (22oz, 12%).

    The oyster stout is actually brewed with oysters, but some tortured part of my brain was disappointed that I didn't actually get a mouthful of oyster taste. What the oysters do add is a mineral, almost seawater quality, like some of the variation in Irish whisky I've found.

    The Czar is one of my favorite imperial stouts. It's quite smooth, and the alcohol presence is very muted--admirable for such a high abv. It's not my favorite, but I personally found it to be above Jester King's Black Metal Imperial and some other American crafts I've had.

    Today I've been working my way through a Flying Dog sampler, which is the pale ale and amber lager, plus two "secret" beers--which turned out to be the golden ale and IPA. I started with the golden because I assumed it would be like a Belgian style golden or white, but was disappointed to find that this "ale" was very similar to a bland, mass-market American lager. The amber was okay, with some nutty flavors and a decent richness, and I'm about to try the other two--but I can't say I'm impressed with this brewery so far.

    It's tricky because it seems like every time I find a decent American microbrew, I have to wade through a couple that are shit.

    @lampcommander reminded me, Marston's Oyster Stout is mighty tasty. Their Pedigree is also excellent and I'm assuming that pretty much everyone here knows about it. I wish I could pull from a well of beer knowledge like the rest of you can, but I'm fairly new to the whole thing and I'm afraid I'll just be going over ground that you're already very familiar with.

    lampcommander: I think the only thing I've been impressed by with Flying Dog Brewery has been Ralph Steadman's work on the packaging and the fact that, when Hunter S. Thompson died, they made a limited tribute beer, Gonzo Imperial Porter, which had a great label.

    I've had the Imperial Porter, Golden Ale, and Pale Ale by Flying Dog, and I have to agree, the best thing about them are the labels and names. That said, I did enjoy their Imperial Porter, and the Hunter S. Thompson connection made it a bit better... though really, I've have better Imperial Stouts/Porters.

    i really didnt like the gonzo. tasted like a very amaturish homebrew. i was really disappointed
