Ampersand, have you ever had a beershake/float before? It is very high on the list of "things that shouldn't work, but oh my god they do!" A little sprinkling of nutmeg on the top really just finishes it off into something truly amazing. My personal favorite beer for that use is Goose Island Oatmeal Stout, though any dark, creamy stout will do. -

I went to a bar once that served a Framboise lambic float. It was amazing. I like stouts, but I'm not sure I could see that working as well. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to try. ;)

I'm thinking of drinking something easy today, nothing with the heavy punch of hops from a Double IPA or the rich deliciousness of a good stout. probably going to go with Dead Guy Ale by Rogue (I still think they're pretty good). Not sure yet, maybe I'll change my mind and just have some Hercules DIPA by Great Divide.
It's nice to have options. -
Nah I've never had one before, but it sounds like an absolutely BRILLIANT idea. I should have one. Now to find the time to get away from work/house/horses for long enough to have one...

As a farewell to my beloved Canada for a few days I picked up a bottle of Beau's All Natural Beaver River I.P.Eh?
You know...I wasn't too fond of it. This was the first time I've felt that the hops overpowered the other flavours that were really trying to get out. There was a slight hint of citrus, but the hops just took over. Normally in my pale ales, especially in Spring/Summer, I like that punch of hoppiness and have it gradually go in to a nice citrusy aftertaste that doesn't feel like you're still being punch. Not so with this. I look forward to their Summer Ale (which I attended the launch of) which has a GREAT transition from maltiness, to sweetness to hoppiness. Ah well.
So long, folks. Next you hear me I'll be in NYC. At the Whole Foods in Union Square. At the Beer Section. Laughing. Then possibly crying. Then picking a fight with the guy at the cheese section. Then getting kicked out. Then...well, we know where to go from there. -
For my birthday, my boyfriend kept feeding me Guinness floats while we loafed about watching TV. It was the greatest thing ever.
Somewhat related: I made those Guinness chocolate cupcakes with a whiskey ganache filling and Bailey's buttercream icing on top yesterday. I adore stouts and wish there was more available in my area than the usual Guinness. Beamish & Murphey's are the only other two I've found, which I can find in some bars. No one ever seems to do the dry Irish stouts. -
And so, I arrive in New York City.

To Russia with beer
Tim O’Rourke, brewer and all-round beer expert, is the man behind ‘The Great Baltic Adventure’. He and his crew left London in May with beers from 14 British breweries – including traditional family concerns like Harvey’s and Shepherd Neame and some of the best new brewers, such as Thornbridge and Dark Star – with the intention of recreating the journey that Russian Imperial Stout once took to reach its market in Russia, a journey that has not been taken by British beer for over 100 years. Along the way the Thermopylae has stopped in at Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki to promote British beer.

I've tried quite a few of Shepard Neame's brews, and I'm not sure if it's just me but I just don't get it. They all seem to taste exactly the same, except for maybe a couple that I've tried. My aunt and uncle bought me a SN sampler for Christmas, and while the taste is reasonable they're all just too similar as far as I'm aware. I'm currently drinking their Summer Sizzler and just thinking it tastes exactly like Master Brew, Spitfire and Bishop's Finger. Maybe it's just me and my inexperienced palate?
In other news a local shop is currently selling Hobgoblin for £1.39 per bottle OMNOMNOMNOMFUCKINGNOM. -

I'm out in the sticks mate, I'm gathering you're right in the city centre? It's at a Lidl in Stapleford, not sure if there'll be similar deals in other Lidls but it's a fiver return in case you want to make the trip!
EDIT: Or of course you might have a car because some people have cars I don't have a car and I ride on the bus a lot and for some reason I naturally assume that everyone rides the bus because I am an imbecile. -

back with a few interesting new beers. There's a new place in my area called The Bottle Shop--set up like a wine bar, so it's half bar and half retail beerporium. So I had two beers there and took two beers home with me.
512 Pecan Porter (16oz draught, 6.8%) -- eh. Pretty solid standard porter, the supposed presence of the pecans were nigh indetectable. Probably just adds a slight roasted enhancement to the porter, but why would you need that? It's porter.
Maui Coconut Porter (12oz can, 6%) HOLY FUCK. Do what you can to try this beer. It is wonderful. It doesn't taste like coconut, per se, but it's got this fantastic nutty complexity that's out of sight, and unlike anything else I've had in recent memory. First class. Oh, but pour it into a glass first (duh).
Rahr Pecker Wrecker Imperial Pilsner (22oz bottle, 7%) I bought this mainly because I wanted to know what the hell an Imperial Pilsner was. I'm getting a little tired of microbreweries adding "imperial" to the end of everything as an excuse to increase the abv--I worry that they do it at the expense of craft and flavor. But I must say that this was interesting and good. Rahr is a Fort Worth brewery and I've been less than impressed with their line so far--the Ugly Pug is the only decent standard offering of what I've tried--but this was quite good. Definite hop presence, but quite mellow, with a surprising amount of malty grain taste and good, full body. Not as hoppy as even a pale ale, which I'm glad for as this is a pilsner--in short, tasting it actually did make me decide that this is what a proper Super Pilsner would taste like.
Rogue Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale (22oz bottle,4.8%) Weird, weird, weird. The feel of the beer on the tongue is akin to stateside Guinness draft--smooth and light, quick and easy to drink. The flavor is like buckwheat noodles and seaweed fell into your dark ale. It's not entirely unpleasant, but it's definitely one of those tried-it-so-I-know kind of things. -

Earlier today I had Moa's Imperial Stout on tap at one of the local beer bars, the Malthouse. It was disappointing. I've had it poured from the bottle in recent times and it's been one of my favourites, but the balance of what came from the keg today was not overly good, unfortunately. There were the usual coffee notes, but there was also an unpleasant hint of aniseed and the alcohol was too high in the mix. Probably not the best batch, given earlier batches of this beer I've had the good fortune to try have been excellent.
Right now, I'm in the process of trying the 8 Wired Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. The coffee notes in concert with the sweetness of the jaggery make for a very well-balanced and quite complex beer so far. It's very smooth going down, which is particularly impressive given the high alcohol content.
Depending on how I feel after this, I may be having yet another bottle of my favourite beer thus far this year, the Renaissance Craftsman Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. It's a wonderful example of the style. The aroma of cocoa hits straight from the opening of the bottle and is even more predominant after the pour. There's a big up-front hit of chocolate with coffee coming on the back end. Good roasty malt. Nice balance. (Edit: Now that I'm having it right after the 8 Wired Imperial, the mouthfeel is actually lacking. Nowhere near as full-bodied, but that's just a reflection of how big the 8 Wired was.)
I've also got the Renaissance Porter for tomorrow as I'm looking to do some braised lamb shanks with prunes and beer on a low heat, which will be interesting.
Has anybody tried the Duvel Tripel Hop? I've got a bottle hiding in my wardrobe and am waiting for the appropriate time to drink it. Hoping it'll keep for some time as I've yet to find an occasion. -

Stapo is not far from my neck of the woods actually, Imma Beeston boy (my GF is a city centre lass - 100m down the road and she'd have an NG1 postcode..) I'll try to leave some on the shelves (at 40p per bottle saving from my local co-op I reckon it's worth stocking up on a few.)
I agree actually with your thoughts about the Shephard and neame beers, they don't seem to be overly different to my pallette either - I'll have one if there's nothing else available but don't usually go for one by choice.
Oh, and I was in the Sir John Borlaise Warren recently and they had a lovely German Wheat Beer on but I've completely forgotten what it was called.

Has anyone tried the Innis & Gun rum-cask aged special edition? I really like their standard and blonde oak cask-aged ales and am wondering if it's worth trying to track the special edition down.
And I keep forgetting, but Asda stock a little something-something that I think people might appreciate here:
