Currently casseroling some diced lamb neck, shallots, carrots, leeks and mushrooms in Badger's Poacher. It's really quite a sweet beer, with a healthy dose of liquorice in it, so if all goes to plan it'll taste somewhat like this amazing aniseed lamb dish I had once. That or I've just ruined some perfectly good lamb...
UPDATE: The lamb was delicious. Couldn't taste the liqourice coming thorugh as much as I'd have liked, but it was there, and it was good. One day I shall cook everything in beer. -

Let's expand our horizons a bit, shall we?
Two beers this evening: Steel Reserve (24oz can, 8.1%) and this little fella right here
For those of you unfamiliar with Steel Reserve: Ass in a Glass. I've had a lot of shitty, shitty beers in my time, but Steel Reserve is among the worst--not THE worst, but definitely at the same party.
Dog Bite, for being even higher proof, is surprisingly not as bad--it's actually a little fruity, kind of like Bud Ice with a little character.
Pouring into a glass doesn't help either one. -

I will cook with Budweiser, because even shit beer can be a good marinade, but Colt .45 is good for nothing but derision. It tastes of sadness and shattered dreams.
This past weekend my wife and I flew down to San Diego to show off the kid to his great grandparents and grandparents alike. While down there I decided to take advantage of the proximity to Stone Brewing Company and tried some of their Levitation Ale when the wife and I got out for a date night and left the kid with her folks. A bit hoppier than I would've expected from an amber with a nutty finish but was tasty, tasty stuff. -
Does anyone know/understand/believe in the different shaped cups for different beer types? Can you explain this to me?

As I understand it, glu, most of it has to do with how the glass' shape will affect the beer's head. Tulip glasses or snifters, for example, will retain the head for damn-near forever, so they're ideal for stouts and porters, which hold a lot of their flavor in the frothy heads - however, they're not very good for anything but sipping, so if you want a big swig of beer, you're better off with a mug or pilsner glass.
One way to think of it is to compare the base and the rim of the glass. The narrower the rim is, compared to the base, the thicker, foamier head you'll get, whereas the wider the rim, the more evenly-distributed the beer will be, and the easier to quaff.
This is a fairly decent example of the different effects you'll get with different glasses:
To be honest, I'm not a HUGE "beer should always be in a glass" proponent, because some beer just tastes better out of a bottle. Some beers, though, need a little room to breathe, or they just won't work up a good head in the bottle. It really depends on the individual beer, and the individual drinker. -

Actually, while it's not just a matter of presentation, it's also a matter of taste and aroma.
Think of wine glasses in this regard. There's different types for red and different types for white and different types for champagne and so on. Same goes with beer. There are just some glasses that match the beer perfectly and allow the perfect equation on how the aroma gets taken in and how the beer itself hits your tongue.
For instance, my mother and I went to a pub and she bought a Pilsner Urquell. She had it in the (impressive looking) pilsner flute seen above. She loved it. Later, when we bought one to take home, she had it in a stemmed abbey goblet. She declared that it smelled and tasted like piss and she wasn't happy. I found a glass kind of similar to a pilsner flute and it got better.
a mix bag of pubs actually acknowledge this and it really does make a world of difference sometimes. -
Regarding the glass a beer is served in, yeah I totally agree with the above posts.
But to get to the point of the post, I just remembered a little tidbit of info about my beer drinking history.
You know how we Brits love a drink as much as we love to moan aboot the weather? Well I just remembered the beers my parents approved me to buy when in France aged , oh about 13 or 14 or so:
It's called Delirium Tremens

I've seen Delirium Tremens mentioned in a few other places, but I've only ever had the opportunity to try Delirium Nocturnum, from the same brewery.
Can't say I remember much about it, unfortunately. I really need to start taking notes during my beer "research" sessions.
My local also has pretty much the whole range of the Floris fruit beers. They vary from delicious (apple) to disgusting (strawberry) with most coming in at around "not bad, but wouldn't drink more than a bottle" (passion fruit being the perfect example of this type) -
I do love Delirium Tremens. Hell, I love the snifter glass it comes in.
Okay, so...I'm looking at brewing some beer this weekend and it'll be my first one from scratch.
So far it's looking like it'll be a pale German wheat beer that's got some hints of citrus and will be more on the bitter side. Well, more bitter than wheat beers usually are. I'm planning on using cascade hops, so citrus and delicious bitterness will be there I also think I may cave and buy a second fermementer so I can get two beers on the go at a time. Hmm..
And thinking on it, I might just attempt to make an Arrogant Bastard clone... -
This has been driving me crazy for months, does anyone know what the residue that's left sticking to the glass after the head is gone is called?

I am loving Chimay Bleu, Gulden Draak and Affligem Abbey Ale Tripel. I am a big Belgium beer person and these are all great.
Also what is everyone's favorite Stout/Imperial Stout ?, I am a huge fan of stout beers and want some new beers to try out.

@eightser my mom bought be a bottle of Chimay White and I had it in my wonderful Chimay glass. True story, Chimay Rogue was the first craft beer I tasted. Before then I was a wine snob who rarely had beer.
Also, OLD RASPUTIN RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT. I had it for the first time last week and I love it to poisoning, stabbing and shooting death.
Tonight I have leftovers to go with a night in. A Fullers London Porter, An Old Rasputin and a Midas Touch.
I'll be honest...now that I've had a few of them, I am NOT a fan of Midas Touch. It's just one of those drinks that taste like vomit to me.
But the night in is much needed. I've been running around the city all week with no time to recover from NYC and I'm feeling rough. I'm sad that I only got to attend one event at Ontario Craft Beer Week, but...well..there will be others. Especially Toronto Beer Week some time in the Fall. -
