    Whelp. 1st post, it might as well be about beer. Here goes.

    I discovered 3floyds Ragnarok just in time for them to run out, as is my custom.

    "A beer for the end of ages brewed with our friends in the band Amon Amarth. This Aesir Porter is a robust and hearty beer brewed with local honey and a small portion of smoked malt.     While it lasted it was glorious.

    i had youngs double chocolate stout last night.... it was horrible. they had it over chocolaty at the expense of the beer. it was watery and tasted like they hadn't flushed the pipes properly. a nasty chemical aftertaste. extremely disappointing. the first time i haven't finished a beer due to taste in a very long time.

    had Abita Turbodog for the first time in several years tonight. it played well with the steak I was eating at the time, but proved too heavy and dark for the new orleans summer I walked out into with it after dinner. while it's certainly not the best brew of its type, it's worth having. just wait until the temperature drops a bit.

    Abita's a pretty good brand. In the summer, their Amber is the way to go--I also appreciate the Purple Haze. But yeah, it's more of a commercial taste than a craft microbrew taste.

    I've noticed a few people slam Young's Double Chocolate lately, but I've always enjoyed the ones I've had. I never found any chemical aftertaste. Buh!

    Flying Dog's Raging Bitch "Belgian-Style IPA."

    Really, really good for using as a component in a fried noodle dish!

    ...kinda useless for anything else. Has a very unpleasant yeasty undertaste, and, while I'm the furthest thing from a hophead, I still know the difference between a well-hopped beer and one that isn't. This one wasn't.

    Still, it's amazing how good it worked when you boil it down, dunk in some wor'stershire sauce and chopped chili peppers, and pour it over sizzling noodles. This is why I make certain exceptions to the "if you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it" rule.

    Went back this weekend to the 3floyds brew pub and tried Thick White Freeks. I quite enjoyed it. Tasted as if a vanilla milkshake and crisp ale had an baby. Perfect for summertime.

    "This massive thick freek of a white ale is brewed with a hint of fresh ginger, coriander, white pepper, orange peel, and orange juice concentrate. The yeast was donated by our friend Urbain from De Struise. 27 IBU 8.5% ABV."

    Had a Drake's 1500 Pale Ale last night. Was tasty although I didn't find it particularly hoppy despite what the website says.

    odd beer moment. Is it okay to say the beer you are drinking tastes of tomato ketchup crisps? Cause that what Stone Brewers Cali-Belgique tastes like....

    i also had Mikkeller Beer Hop Breakfast which was HOPPY and tasty too

    its apparently the unique yeasts they used in it, i also had the Stone IPA its based on which was much nicer. although the tomatoey flavour did seem to be mostly contained in the head and wasn't unpleasant it was just really.... odd. i wouldn't drink it again but i'm glad i did.

    I used to drink a Sheaf Stout with a raw egg in it first thing in the morning after a big night out. Something my grandad taught me - apparently it's a good source of carbs and protein.

    I had a Bard's over the weekend, which is a gluten-free beer. I've been really curious as to what the hell a gluten-free beer tastes like, because how can you even do that? But this beer is made from sorghum. So that's what it tastes like.

    I actually really don't like sorghum, but the taste is definitely present in the beer without being unpleasant, and it still tastes and feels like beer to me--a flavored one, like Breckenridge vanilla porter. It's not something I'd probably ever buy, but it wasn't a bad experience.

    I'm still curious about other gluten-free beers, as I can't imagine that all of them are made from sorghum...

    I think some people have already mentioned it, but I had a Brewdog Tokio this weekend. It was tasty and alcoholic. (this is where my inability to talk all fancy like about beer shows... oldhat or any of you other connoisseurs, if you find yourselves in my neck of the woods, I'd like to buy you a beer or four just to have someone walk me through the different flavors and all that stuff). It was the beginning of a night that had me sleeping in my car after last call. Before the car nap, I topped the evening off with an Aecht Schlenkerla Urbock, which is pork flavored. I like me some pork, but I'm not convinced it was the right choice to end the evening on.

    You know what's really good? Mission St. Brown Ale. It's $2 for a bigass bottle at Trader Joe's. I don't want to give the impression that it's good for $2; it's just good.

    @Fauxhammer - there are a LOT of good beers to be found at TJ's. I absolutely love their "seasonal" Winterfest (dark double bock).

    I recently had Huyghe Brewery's Delirium Tremens. Wow. The chunks of yeast and extremely bubbly flavor was delicious!

    By the way, in case you haven't learned already, STAY AWAY from Baltika. Hopefully I'm not offending any Russians around here, but Jesus Christ... a couple years ago a friend and I worked our way through the entire line without a damn one being good. I think #5 was the only palatable one we found. The 99 or whatever number it was that came in a 2-liter plastic soda bottle was especially horrifying. Puke and piss, take it away.
