As I've mentioned before, I've become a sort of substitute father for a wonderful teen-aged girl, and two weekends ago I got to watch her graduate from high school. It was a wonderful thing, lots of joy and pride and such. Except that I forgot it was summer, since I rarely go outside during daylight, and I managed to burn myself to a crisp. But still, very nice event.

This weekend I'm off to the family cottage to do some writing. Nice, lakeside place, very quiet. No internets, but I think I can handle a couple of days off grid. Especially when I get to watch the sunset over the lake while sitting on the pontoon boat and sipping cold beer. Yes.

There's a project at work that is supposed to be out the door soon. After that I'm going to try to commit to taking time off. To drive around the Pacific NW, to visit family back East, maybe just spend a week decluttering my apartment.

I totally wasted last summer. I don't want that to happen again.

So it doesn't look like I'll be getting away anytime soon, but

on a more positive note my Summer has mainly been taken up with keeping on top of my allotment, which is a great learning experience (this is my first full growing year, having acquired it late last summer). The first few months had to be spent doing the necessary groundwork to get it ready to grow produce - the plot had lain untouched for at least a year or two when we took it over - and I'm still finding all sorts of strange things as I go (for instance there are two completely random clumps of corn/wheat/other grain growing amongst the wild-meadow style area I am trying to encourage).


I'm really enjoying eating the friuts of my labour so far - mainly charlotte potatoes, but the courgettes, garlic, tomatoes etc are coming on strong.

Girlfriend is out of town for almost two weeks, so no getting laid for a little while.

Next week, the bedbugs in my house will be killed. Very much looking forward to that.

Setting up to take a vacation in August, my a road trip to Lost Maples and Garner State Parks, in TX, staying in a cabin for just under a week, with my daughter and my girlfriend. Going to visit the Devil's Sinkhole, and watch some bats, and go horseback riding and take archery lessons. Should be fun. I don't get to see my kid very often, so I have a chance to be a kickass dad for a week.

Next up was a chokecherry tree that's leaning out over the house, but today I found a massive elm tree is splitting in half. Since it's tall enough to knock the family room to flinders and I can't see a way to make it fall any other direction, it's time to call a pro.

And all of this has to happen before the landscapers show up in mid-July to build a beautiful retaining wall. I'm not optimistic about summer so far... garden seems to be going really slowly and frustratingly and my workload has pretty much doubled - there's a whole lot of stuff to do before a big conference in September, and it feels like there's going to be no respite at all until then.
